CAIROLI SUL PODIO OLANDESE CON LA RED BULL KTM VINCE ENTRAMBE LE GARE MXGP

Il Gran Premio dei Paesi Bassi si è svolto sul circuito sabbioso di Oss per il quarto round del 2021 MXGP e il Red Bull KTM Factory Racing è stato in grado di aggiudicarsi entrambe le manche MXGP mentre Tony Cairoli ha ottenuto il suo terzo podio dell’anno nel secondo posto .

JEFFREY HERLINGS OUT FOR INJURY!

Valkenswaard, Lierop e Assen hanno ospitato tutti i round olandesi di MXGP negli ultimi due decenni, ma Oss è entrato nel calendario per il suo primo Gran Premio dei Paesi Bassi dalla fine degli anni ’90. La pista presentava un terreno sabbioso poco profondo che si è notevolmente reso ruvido nel clima soleggiato e caldo.

L’eroe locale Jeffrey Herlings è arrivato a Oss con un record superlativo in casa e 14 vittorie di Gran Premi in entrambe le classi dal suo debutto a Valkenswaard nel 2010. Il 26enne è stato al centro dell’attenzione per il piccolo raduno di fan a cui è stato concesso il circuito e ha ottenuto la sua terza Pole Position della stagione finora nelle prove cronometrate del mattino.

La prima manche di Herlings è stata piena di azione quando Ivo Monticelli è atterrato sulla schiena uscendo dalla seconda curva. L’olandese è rimasto in piedi, ha sopportato il dolore e ha trovato costantemente un ritmo che lo ha tirato su dal 4 °, attraverso una battaglia frenetica per il comando e al 1° per cogliere la sua seconda vittoria consecutiva. Una scansione tra le manche ha rivelato che Herlings aveva subito una piccola frattura alla scapola sinistra e ha dovuto saltare la gara successiva.

Tony Cairoli, autore di due podi (1° e 3°) nei tre round precedenti, ha ottenuto l’8° posto nella prima manche dopo una partenza mediocre e una breve caduta all’ultimo giro. L’italiano è stato molto più proattivo nella seconda uscita e il suo eccellente ritmo di gara e il suo condizionamento lo hanno visto scalare le alte sfere della classifica per superare Tim Gajser e prendere la sua seconda bandiera a scacchi dell’anno.

Jorge Prado è stato sfortunato a perdere la sua prima cerimonia sul podio della stagione. Lo spagnolo è andato 6-3 e ha condotto 13 giri della seconda gara. Mancava solo un punto al suo primo trofeo del 2021 ed è ora 5° in classifica.

Tony Cairoli: “Sono contento del risultato complessivo ma non tanto della prima manche. So di avere le capacità e la forma fisica per essere migliore dell’8° posto ma ho commesso un errore e una brutta partenza. Le partenze non sono state eccezionali oggi, ma la seconda manche è stata davvero buona e sono stato contento di come sono riuscito a spingermi davanti. Un podio ogni settimana è l’obiettivo e avevo un po’ paura che l’8° posto della prima manche me lo avrebbe negato… ma alla fine siamo arrivati 2°”.

Jorge Prado: “Una bella giornata e tutto sta procedendo. Era tanto tempo che non conducevo una gara del genere, sicuramente dalla MX2, quindi posso essere felice. Facevo un po’ fatica, soprattutto con la respirazione questo fine settimana, quindi è stato difficile andare avanti con quel ritmo. I ragazzi hanno fatto una moto fantastica perché abbiamo scoperto alcune cose durante l’allenamento e avevo sicuramente una KTM pronta per vincere oggi. Mi sentivo bene tutto il giorno anche se era una pista così fisica, così accidentata e non come un normale circuito di sabbia. Ero completamente “fatto” alla fine della seconda manche e Tony è passato così forte. Vorrei aggiungere un messaggio a Jeffrey per tenere la testa alta, è uno sport così duro e non è stata colpa sua. Il motocross può essere crudele in questo modo. Tanto rispetto per aver vinto ancora la prima manche: non credo che ci siano molti piloti in grado di farlo!”

Jeffrey Herlings: “Cosa posso dire di oggi? Avevo grandi speranze e volevo 1-1. Ho fatto un’ottima partenza nella prima manche, ma il dispositivo di avviamento non si è disinserito immediatamente in salita e non sono saltato così lontano come faccio di solito fuori dalle wave. Il resto è storia. Ho avuto molto dolore, ma ho pensato di continuare a cercare di ottenere il 4° o il 5° posto. Ho visto che ero ancora in grado di raggiungere i ragazzi così ho iniziato a passarli anche se riuscivo a malapena a resistere negli ultimi tre giri. Ho una piccola crepa nella scapola e ancora non so quanto sia grave. Abbiamo fatto una scansione e non sembra male. Non ho alcun dolore ora, ma correre con una moto da cross è una storia diversa. Domani faremo un altro controllo”.

MX2

Per la seconda volta in soli quattro round Red Bull KTM Factory Racing è entrata nel Gran Premio come detentori della tabella rossa e leader della classe MX2. Il campione del mondo in carica Tom Vialle – dominatore del GP di apertura in Russia – era ancora fermo a causa della frattura alla mano destra ma il compagno di squadra esordiente e vincitore dell’ultima gara in Italia, Mattia Guadagnini, è stato in grado di attaccare il numero rosso di sfondo sulla sua KTM 250 SX-F.

È stato Rene Hofer a brillare a Oss. L’austriaco è partito brillantemente e ha raggiunto il 2° posto nella sabbia prima di arrivare finalmente al 4° posto nella prima manche. Durante la seconda gara il 19enne non si è allontanato dal cancello e si è dovuto accontentare del 10° posto, vale a dire il 5° posto assoluto e la sua seconda top five della stagione fino ad oggi.

Guadagnini ha avuto una brutta partenza e due cadute nella prima manche ed era fuori dalla zona punti. È riuscito a risalire fino al 14° posto ed è stato più elevato nella seconda gara. Si è classificato 5° per 10° assoluto e il rookie è 2° in classifica.

Rene Hofer: “La definirei una giornata “50/50”. La prima manche è stata davvero buona, la seconda piuttosto male! È stata una giornata dura, molto fisica e la pista era molto accidentata. Ma, comunque, è un risultato tra i primi cinque sulla sabbia, quindi sono felice, anche se sento ancora che c’è molto spazio per migliorare. Il prossimo fine settimana ci riproveremo. Non vedo l’ora che arrivi Loket perché non è così lontano da casa mia e spero di vedere molte bandiere austriache in pista! Grazie al mio team per lo sforzo fantastico!”

Mattia Gaudagnini: “Non è il giorno migliore per me oggi. La pista mi è piaciuta, ma la caduta nella prima gara non ha aiutato. Un pilota è caduto davanti a me alla prima curva e sono dovuto venire da molto indietro. Stavo guidando bene fino a quando non ho avuto un altro piccolo incidente! Ho avuto un buon ritmo nella seconda manche ed è stato bello concludere la giornata in modo positivo, anche se ho perso alcuni punti in gara uno. Sono ancora secondo in campionato perché siamo tutti vicini. Non vedo l’ora che arrivi Loket”.

MXGP si sposta direttamente a Loket per il Gran Premio della Repubblica Ceca il prossimo fine settimana. Rispetto alle esigenze sabbiose di Oss, il quinto round presenta una sfida diversa con lo stretto e duro percorso ceco.

CAIROLI ON THE DUTCH PODIUM AS RED BULL KTM WIN BOTH MXGP RACES

The Grand Prix of the Netherlands took place at the sandy Oss circuit for the fourth round of 2021 MXGP and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing were able to clinch both MXGP motos as Tony Cairoli grasped his third podium result of the year in the runner-up slot.

Valkenswaard, Lierop and Assen have all hosted Dutch rounds of MXGP throughout the last two decades, but Oss entered the calendar for its first Grand Prix of the Netherlands since the end of the 1990s. The track featured shallow sandy terrain that roughed-up considerably in the sunny and hot climate.

MXGP

Local hero Jeffrey Herlings came to Oss with a superlative record on home turf and 14 Grand Prix wins in both classes since his debut at Valkenswaard in 2010. The 26-year-old was the center of attention for the small gathering of fans permitted to enter the circuit and took his third Pole Position of the season so far in morning Timed Practice.

Herlings’ first moto was action-packed as Ivo Monticelli landed on his back exiting the second corner. The Dutchman remained upright, bore the pain and steadily found a pace that pulled him up from 4th, through a frantic battle for the lead and into 1st to seize his second victory in succession. A scan between the motos revealed that Herlings had suffered a small fracture in his left shoulder blade and he had to sit-out the next race.

Tony Cairoli, who has recorded two podium finishes (1st and 3rd) in the three previous rounds, recorded 8th position in the first moto after a mediocre start and a brief last lap crash. The Italian was much more proactive in the second outing and his excellent race rhythm and conditioning saw him move through the upper echelons of the leaderboard to pass Tim Gajser and take his second checkered flag of the year.

Jorge Prado was unlucky to miss his first podium ceremony of the season. The Spaniard went 6-3 and led 13 laps of the second race. He was just one point shy of his first trophy of 2021 and is now 5th in the standings.

Tony Cairoli: “I’m happy with the overall result but not so much with the first moto. I know I have the skills and the physical shape to be better than 8th but I made a mistake and a bad start. The starts were not great today but the second moto was really good and I was pleased with how I could push to the front. A podium every week is the goal and I was a bit scared that the 8th from the first moto would make it…but we took 2nd in the end.”

Jorge Prado: “A great day and everything is progressing. I haven’t led a race like that for a long time, certainly since MX2, so I can be happy. I was struggling a bit, especially with breathing this weekend so it was tough to keep going at that pace. The guys built a great bike because we found a few things during training and I definitely had a KTM ready to win today. I was feeling good all day long even if it was such a physical track, so bumpy and not like a normal sand circuit. I was completely ‘done’ at the end of the second moto and Tony came past so strong. I’d like to add a message to Jeffrey to keep his head up, it is such a tough sport, and it was not his fault. Motocross can be cruel like this. Much respect for still winning the first moto: I don’t think there are many riders that can do that!”

Jeffrey Herlings: “What can I say about today? I had high hopes and wanted 1-1. I had a great start in the first moto but the start device did not disengage immediately up the hill and I did not jump as far as I usually do out of the waves. The rest is history. I had a lot of pain but thought I’d keep going to try and get 4th or 5th. I saw I was still able to catch the guys so I started passing them even though I could barely hold on for the last three laps. I have a small crack in my shoulder blade and I still don’t know how bad it is. We had a scan and it doesn’t seem too bad. I don’t have any pain now but racing a dirt bike is a different story. We’ll have another check tomorrow.”

MX2

For the second time in just four rounds Red Bull KTM Factory Racing entered the Grand Prix as holders of the red plate and leaders of the MX2 class. Reigning world champion Tom Vialle – dominator of the opening GP in Russia – was still sidelined due to his fractured right hand but rookie teammate and winner of the last race in Italy, Mattia Guadagnini, was able to attach the red number background on his KTM 250 SX-F.

It was Rene Hofer who shone at Oss. The Austrian started brightly and reached as high as 2nd in the sand before finally scoring 4th in the first moto. During the second race the 19-year-old didn’t get away from the gate as well and had to settle for 10th, meaning 5th overall and his second top-five of the campaign to-date.

Guadagnini suffered a bad start and two crahes in the first moto and was outside the points-scoring positions. He managed to track back to 14th and was more elevated in the second race. He classified 5th for 10th overall and the rookie sits 2nd in the standings.

Rene Hofer: “I’d call it a ‘50/50’ day. The first moto was really good, second moto pretty bad! It was a tough day, really physical and the track was super-rough. But, still, it’s a top five result in the sand, so I am happy, even though I still feel there is a lot of space for improvement. Next weekend we’ll try again. I am really looking forward to Loket as it is not so far from my home and I hope to see a lot of Austrian flags at the track! Thanks to my team for the fantastic effort!”

Mattia Gaudagnini: “Not the best day for me today. I enjoyed the track but the crash in the first race didn’t help. A rider fell in front of me on the first corner and I had to come from far back. I was riding well until I had another small crash! I had a good rhythm in the second moto and it was good to finish the day in a positive way, even if I did lose some points in race one. I’m still second in the championship as we are all close. I’m looking forward to Loket now.”

MXGP moves directly to Loket for the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic next weekend. Compared to the sandy demands of Oss, round five presents a different challenge with the narrow, hard-packed Czech course.
