Secondo podio in questa stagione per Romain Febvre
Romain Febvre del Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team ha messo alle spalle le battute d’arresto per salire sul podio nel round olandese del Campionato Mondiale FIM MXGP Motocross a Oss.
La prima manche, in cui Febvre ha segnato il giro più veloce, è stata una classica in quanto i primi quattro piloti al mondo hanno combattuto furiosamente una battaglia per la supremazia intorno all’aspra pista di sabbia naturale nel sud del paese. Romain ha vinto il premio holeshot – il suo terzo della stagione – prima di finire largo nella terra alla seconda curva. Il francese è rimasto imperterrito per mantenere il secondo posto all’uscita della curva in salita e ne è seguito un duello titanico per il comando con il pilota della sua città Glenn Coldenhoff in cui l’eroe locale ha resistito a numerose sfide del leader Kawasaki mentre il tenace francese cercava una via d’uscita di volta in volta. Una scivolata a metà gara ha temporaneamente lasciato Febvre al terzo posto, ma ha subito risposto per ripassare il campione del mondo in carica e ancora una volta chiudere il leader prima che la ruota anteriore si sprofondasse in una banchina profonda mentre cercava un passaggio. Tale era la vicinanza dei primi quattro che l’incidente lo ha portato al quarto posto alla bandiera a scacchi. La seconda gara è stata ugualmente avvincente in quanto il francese è passato di nuovo immediatamente al secondo posto, ma è stato drammaticamente scaraventato contro la recinzione a bordo pista da un salto difficile. Rientrato in gara settimo, ha caricato fino alla bandiera a scacchi, segnando costantemente giri più veloci del vincitore finale, mancando di poco il terzo posto in manche, ma il quarto è stato sufficiente per conquistare il terzo posto sul podio. Ora è quarto nella classifica a punti con lo stesso punteggio del pilota in seconda posizione.
Il compagno di squadra KRT Ivo Monticelli ha vissuto un altro GP drammatico. L’italiano è volato via dal gruppo entrando nella prima curva di gara uno ma è andato largo nella recinzione per cedere il comando. Poi sul salto in salita è caduto in modo spettacolare quando il pilota che lo precedeva ha accusato un problema tecnico che lo ha fatto saltare corto; il pilota Kawasaki, già pienamente impegnato nel salto, non ha avuto colpa ma l’urto lo ha relegato nelle retrovie prima di mettersi in testa con determinazione chiudendo al diciottesimo posto. È stato nuovamente sfortunato all’inizio di gara due quando un altro pilota è caduto sulla sua traiettoria entrando alla curva due ed è finito nel fango profondo all’esterno della curva per evitare il pilota caduto. È arrivato undicesimo alla bandiera a scacchi dal ventesimo al primo giro.
Romain Febvre: “Sento che avrebbe dovuto essere il mio GP; Ho preso due buone partenze – una holeshot e una seconda – e avevo la velocità ma qualche errore mi è costato. Ho ottenuto l’holeshot in gara uno, ma alla curva due sono andato troppo largo su sterrato morbido. Ero veloce ma Hoff bloccava ogni mio attacco. Ho imparato a prendermi il mio tempo ma il sorpasso non è avvenuto e alla fine sono scivolato via due volte. La seconda gara è stata la stessa storia quando sono caduto cercando di nuovo un sorpasso per il comando; Ho commesso un errore scendendo dal salto e sono quasi saltato contro la recinzione. Mi sono alzato velocemente ma il ritmo era caldo e mi sono dovuto accontentare di nuovo del quarto posto. Eppure ero di nuovo sul podio e ora mi aspetto la vittoria nel prossimo GP a Loket dove ho vinto nel 2019.”
Ivo Monticelli: “Tutti cercano sempre di spingere al primo giro. Sono arrivato al salto in salita e Jeffrey ha saltato corto. Ero già in aria e non potevo evitarlo. Sto bene. Mi dispiace molto per Jeffrey, ma questo è il nostro sport. La moto era danneggiata ma mi sono rialzato dopo che tutti gli altri erano passati e ho trovato un buon ritmo per finire diciottesimo. La mia partenza è andata bene anche nella seconda gara, ma Hoff è caduto davanti a me alla seconda curva e sono uscito nel fango profondo all’esterno della curva per evitarlo. Ero ventesimo ma sono tornato decimo prima che Seewer mi passasse a pochi giri dalla fine. Oggi ho fatto due buone manche senza errori e con una buona velocità, quindi sono fiducioso per il futuro. “

Second podium this season for Romain Febvre
Romain Febvre of the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team put setbacks behind him to mount the podium in the Dutch round of the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship at Oss.The first moto, in which Febvre set the fastest lap, was a classic as the top four riders in the world fought a furiously battle for supremacy around the rugged natural sand track in the south of the country. Romain took the holeshot award – his third of the season – before running wide into deep dirt at turn two. The Frenchman remained unruffled to retain second on the uphill exit from the turn and there followed a titanic duel for the lead with home-town rider Glenn Coldenhoff in which the local hero resisted numerous challenges from the Kawasaki leader as the persistent Frenchman sought a way past time-and-again. A slip at half-distance temporarily dropped Febvre to third but he immediately responded to repass the defending world champion and once more close down the leader before the front wheel buried itself in a deep berm as he sought a passing move. Such was the proximity of the leading four that the incident dropped him to fourth at the chequered flag. The second race was equally enthralling as the Frenchman again moved immediately to second but he was dramatically thrown into the trackside fence off a gnarly jump. Rejoining the race seventh he charged until the chequered flag, consistently setting faster laps than the eventual winner, to narrowly miss third in the moto but fourth was sufficient to claim third on the podium. He is now fourth in the series points standings on the same score as the rider in second.
KRT teammate Ivo Monticelli experienced another dramatic GP. The Italian sprinted clear of the pack entering the first turn of race one but ran wide into the fence to surrender the lead. Then on the uphill jump he crashed spectacularly when the rider just ahead of him suffered a technical problem which caused him to jump short; the Kawasaki rider, already fully committed to the jump, was not at fault but the collision relegated him to the rear of the field before putting in a determined ride to finish eighteenth. He was again unfortunate at the start of race two as another rider fell in his path entering turn two and he ran into deep mud on the outside of the corner to avoid the fallen rider. He advanced to eleventh by the chequered flag from twentieth on the opening lap.
Romain Febvre: “I feel that should have been my GP; I took two good starts – a holeshot and a second – and I had the speed but a few mistakes cost me. I got the holeshot in race one but went too wide into soft dirt at turn two. I was fast but Hoff blocked my every attack. I have learnt to take my time but the pass didn’t happen and in the end I slipped off two times. The second race was the same story when I crashed looking for a pass for the lead again; I made a mistake coming down the hill and almost jumped into the fence. I got up fast but the pace was hot and I again had to settle for fourth. Still, I was on the podium again and now I expect the win in the next GP at Loket where I won in 2019. “
Ivo Monticelli: “Everyone always tries to push on the first lap. I arrived at the uphill jump and Jeffrey jumped short. I was already in the air and couldn’t miss him. I’m OK. I am so sorry for Jeffrey but this is our sport. The bike was damaged but I got back up after everyone else had gone past and found a good rhythm to finish eighteenth. My start was OK in the second race too but Hoff crashed in front of me at the second turn and I went out into the deep mud on the outside of the turn to avoid him. I was twentieth but I came back,to tenth before Seewer passed me a few laps from the end. I rode two good motos with no mistakes and good speed today so I am confident for the future. “
