TONY CAIROLI

La Ducati è al lavoro per mettere insieme il proprio impegno nel motocross e ha alcune persone molto intelligenti in luoghi chiave che lo rendono possibile. Ciò include Tony Cairoli, la megastar dei GP che non ha bisogno di presentazioni. Ducati sa quanto sia importante Cairoli anche per questo programma, come evidenziato dai commenti di Paolo Ciabatti, Direttore Generale del nuovo e nascente programma Ducati Corse Off-Road, che ha parlato dell’assunzione e dell’inclusione del nove volte campione del mondo FIM Motocross Cairoli a contribuire a supervisionare e sviluppare la moto da cross Desmo450 MX della società con sede a Bologna, in Italia.
“Tony Cairoli ci sta aiutando a spingere la moto al limite”, ha detto il 66enne veterano del settore Ciabatti, una variabile significativa nel calcolo della Ducati. “Forse anche Tony farà alcune gare. Questo non è stato ancora deciso. Tony ha deciso di unirsi al progetto e penso che questo dimostri che Ducati sta facendo le cose sul serio. Vogliamo avere successo. Sappiamo che ci vorrà del tempo perché sappiamo quanto tempo hanno impiegato altri produttori prima di raggiungere il successo. Sappiamo che possiamo arrivarci e questo è l’obiettivo. L’obiettivo principale è sviluppare la moto. Stiamo sviluppando la moto e, d’altra parte, sappiamo che con un pilota come Tony, l’aspettativa nelle corse è che saremo al top o lotteremo per il top. Se si ottengono ottimi risultati, sarà la situazione perfetta”.
Inseriscine uno, Antonio Cairoli. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager nel 2023, l’italiano Cairoli si è subito avvicinato al progetto Ducati, facendolo sapere ai media mondiali del motocross: “Sono estremamente felice di entrare a far parte dell’universo Ducati, che è sempre stato un simbolo dell’italianità nel mondo, e di iniziare questa nuova entusiasmante avventura, in un progetto tutto italiano”.
Prendendosi una pausa da quello che è stato un periodo di test lungo e completo, Cairoli ha parlato con noi dalla sua casa in Italia.
“Dopo tanti anni trascorsi ad aiutare KTM, ovviamente per me è stato bello avere una nuova opportunità come questa perché prima di tutto sono sempre stato un fan della Ducati e ho sempre desiderato che avessero la moto da cross all’inizio della mia carriera , ovviamente, per aiutarli a portarlo ai vertici di questo sport. Certo, sono arrivati con la moto da cross quando ero già in pensione, ma il progetto era davvero interessante perché dovevo sviluppare una moto da cross praticamente da zero. Questo tipo di situazione è stata interessante per me ed è per questo che la prendo davvero sul serio e cerco di fare del mio meglio. Sì, è stato molto difficile per me lasciare la KTM perché avevo un ottimo rapporto con loro, e ce l’ho ancora.”
“Dal punto di vista delle corse con KTM sono stato coinvolto come Team Manager nel 2023, ma per me era più importante fare qualcosa di più orientato alle corse e che coinvolgesse più azione perché mi piace ancora guidare e correre”, ha continuato Cairoli. “Questo è ancora possibile con la mia fisicità al momento, quindi voglio ancora sfruttare tutto questo, e questa è stata una grande opportunità con Ducati per avere tutto questo”.
Nato e cresciuto per diventare una futura stella del motocross a Patti, in Sicilia, in Italia, Cairoli è rimasto incuriosito dal progetto Ducati nel momento in cui ne ha saputo tutto.
“Certo, ho alcuni amici nel mondo della MotoGP e la possibilità che la Ducati potesse iniziare a produrre una moto da cross stava già iniziando a diffondersi un po’ ed ero davvero in contatto con Paolo Ciabatti della Ducati”, ha spiegato Cairoli di come per lui il progetto Ducati è iniziato. “Conosceva la mia carriera ed era un fan, e quando arrivarono queste notizie sul motocross Ducati, gli ho detto: ‘È vero? La Ducati verrà con una moto da cross?’ Abbiamo iniziato a parlare abbastanza velocemente. Era la fine dell’anno scorso. Tutto si è riunito abbastanza rapidamente.
Come Paolo Ciabatti ha chiarito fin dall’inizio, Cairoli è abbastanza consapevole che tutti i soggetti coinvolti lavoreranno sostanzialmente da zero. “Sì, sì, sì, è molto difficile farlo. Naturalmente sono davvero motivati e ovviamente sanno come costruire moto. Il motocross è un segmento molto diverso e difficile per loro, ma abbiamo dei bravi ingegneri e alcuni bravi piloti che provano la moto, quindi penso che ci sposteremo rapidamente in testa”.
“Ho guidato la moto già da qualche tempo e la moto è molto, molto buona. Voglio dire, la prima volta che l’ho guidata sono rimasto davvero sorpreso perché era solo la seconda o la terza volta che la moto era su sterrato. Ho detto a tutti: “Davvero?” Questa è solo la seconda o la terza volta che la moto è stata sullo sterrato?” Hanno detto: “Sì, abbiamo messo la moto al banco prova per un bel po’ di tempo, ma mai in pista.” Sono rimasto molto sorpreso dalla moto. . È molto bella e molto facile da guidare. Certo, da qui ad arrivare ad essere competitivi c’è ancora del lavoro da fare, sai? È un ottimo punto di partenza”.
“Sono completamente coinvolto nello sviluppo della moto. Testiamo nuove cose e nuovi aggiornamenti alla moto. Naturalmente le corse non sono proprio la parte principale dei miei piani, al momento. Continueremo a sviluppare la moto e vedremo come andrà e poi forse correrò un po’. Al momento è ancora lontano perché abbiamo molto lavoro da fare per essere davanti nel mondo delle moto. È ancora tempo di lavorare.
“La scorsa settimana abbiamo testato per tre giorni e ora questa settimana testeremo nei prossimi giorni. Naturalmente, ogni volta che provo racconto tutto ai ragazzi e loro tornano in officina e in fabbrica e preparano le parti. Spesso ci vuole un po’ di tempo perché al momento è tutto ancora un prototipo”.
“Sapete, per me questa opportunità di andare al marchio Ducati è bella e mi fa davvero piacere. Essere un team manager per me è arrivato un po’ troppo presto. L’anno scorso ero manager del KTM Factory Team e ora sono più nella guida. Mi diverto ancora molto perché sono ancora abbastanza in forma. Posso guidare e provare e per me è molto interessante al momento. Per fare il team manager avrò tempo più avanti”.
“Giriamo un paio di volte a settimana. Abbiamo provato e cercato di rendere la moto pronta perché Alessandro Lupino, l’altro mio compagno di squadra e tester per la Ducati, avrà una gara la prossima settimana. Abbiamo il primo evento del Campionato Italiano e lui deve gareggiare. Questa settimana e la prossima cercherò di mettere a punto la moto nel miglior modo possibile. Sono stato piuttosto impegnato con i test ultimamente. Al momento questo è il piano. Stiamo cercando di sviluppare la moto affinché sia il più preparato possibile per questa gara imminente”.
Nel suo cuore è ancora un pilota di livello mondiale, Cairoli ha sottolineato che se tutto andrà bene e andrà secondo i piani nelle prime fasi di ricerca e sviluppo, gli piacerebbe molto schierarsi dietro un cancello di partenza e gareggiare sulla nuova Ducati quest’estate. .
“Se la moto reagisce bene e abbiamo una buona risposta e sono abbastanza contento, sì, sicuramente mi piacerebbe correre qualche gara quest’anno. Non sappiamo che tipo di gare o quali gare, ma mi piacerebbe fare qualche gara. Quando si tratta di test, la parte migliore sono le corse. È una buona cosa.”
Un pilota amato in tutto il mondo, sia come concorrente che anche semplicemente come pluricampione del mondo in pensione, Cairoli è rimasto stupito dall’accoglienza positiva ed entusiasta che ha ricevuto dagli appassionati di motocross di tutti gli angoli del pianeta Terra.
“Sì, ho ricevuto tanti feedback positivi da tutto il mondo”, ha detto Cairoli molto entusiasta. “I miei fan sono davvero entusiasti di questo progetto. Tutti sono davvero entusiasti di questo. Ma ovviamente dobbiamo essere realistici e sappiamo che è una moto completamente nuova e dobbiamo essere pazienti e vedere cosa dobbiamo fare e su cosa dobbiamo lavorare per ottenere la migliore moto possibile. Di sicuro ci vuole tempo. Non è una cosa veloce”.
Quindi, la Ducati può fare bene nelle competizioni globali di motocross e supercross?
“Sì, di sicuro. Voglio dire, Ducati è un marchio che vuole vincere sempre e in ogni disciplina e sicuramente faremo del nostro meglio per arrivare al top. Il podio è il nostro obiettivo. Ogni volta che ci schiereremo per il campionato del mondo, punteremo a questo. Per me essere italiano e avere l’opportunità di lanciare questo grande progetto per Ducati e la sua primissima moto da cross è fantastico, vediamo cosa possiamo fare”.

BETWEEN THE MOTOSTONY CAIROLI

Ducati is hard at work putting together their motocross racing effort, and they’ve got some very smart people in key locations making it happen. That includes Tony Cairoli, the MXGP megastar who needs no introduction. Ducati know just how important Cairoli is this program too, as evidenced by comments from Paolo Ciabatti, General Manager of the new and upstart Ducati Corse Off-Road program, who spoke on the hire and inclusion of nine-time FIM Motocross World Champion Cairoli to help oversee and develop the Bologna, Italy-based motor company’s Desmo450 MX motocross bike.
“Tony Cairoli is helping in pushing the bike to the limit,” offered the 66 year-old industry veteran Ciabatti, a significant variable in the calculus of Ducati. “Maybe Tony will do some races, as well. That has not been decided yet. Tony decided to join the project and I think that shows that Ducati is doing things seriously. We want to be successful. We know it will take time because we know how long it took for some other manufacturers before they came to success. We know that we can get there and that’s the target. The main target is developing the bike. There is developing the bike, and on the other side, we know with a rider like Tony, the expectation in racing is that we will be on top or fighting for the top. If it comes with some very good results, it is going to be the perfect situation.”
Enter one, Antonio Cairoli. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager in 2023, the Italian Cairoli was immediately drawn to the Ducati project, letting it be known in the global motocross media, “I am extremely happy to become part of the universe of Ducati, which has always been a symbol of Italian spirit throughout the world, and to begin this exciting new adventure, in an all-Italian project.”
Taking a break from what has been a lengthy and comprehensive testing period, Cairoli spoke with us from his home in Italy.
“After so many years of helping KTM, of course for me it was nice to have a new opportunity like this because first of all, I have always been a fan of Ducati and I always wished that they had the motocross bike earlier in my career, of course, to help them bring it to the top of the sport. Of course, they arrived with the motocross bike when I was already retired, but the project was really interesting because I had to develop a motocross bike from basically zero. This kind of situation was interesting to me and that’s why I really take it seriously and try to do my best. Yes, it was very difficult for me to leave KTM because I had such a good relationship with them, and I still have that.”
“On the racing side with KTM I was involved as a Team Manager in 2023, but for me it was more important to do something more racing oriented and involving more action because I still enjoy to ride and race,” continued Cairoli. “This is still possible with my physicality at the moment, so I want still to use all of that, and this was a great opportunity with Ducati to have all of this.”
Born and raised to be a future motocross star in Patti, Sicily, Italy, Cairoli was intrigued with the Ducati project the moment he caught wind of it all.
“Of course, I have some friends in the MotoGP world and the possibility that Ducati might start to make a motocross bike was already starting to spread around a bit and I was really in touch with Paolo Ciabatti from Ducati,” explained Cairoli of how the Ducati project first got rolling for him. “He knew about my career and was a fan, and when this Ducati motocross news was coming around, I said to him, ‘Is this true? Is Ducati coming with a motocross bike?’ We started talking quite quickly. It was the end of last year. Everything came together quite quickly.”
Like Paolo Ciabatti has made clear all along the way, Cairoli is quite aware that all involved will be basically working off a clean, white sheet of blank paper. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is very difficult to do this. Of course, they are really motivated and of course they know how to build bikes. Motocross is a very different and difficult segment for them, but we have some good engineers, and we have some good riders testing the bike, so I think we will move quickly to the front.”
“I’ve ridden the bike some time already and the bike is very, very good. I mean the first time I rode it I was really surprised with the bike because it was only the second or third time that the bike was on dirt. I said to all of them, ‘Really? This is only the second or third time the bike has been on dirt?’ They said, ‘Yeah, we put the bike on a dyno for quite a bit of time, but never on the track.’ I was very surprised with the bike. It is very nice and very easy to ride. Of course, from here to arrive to be competitive, there is still some work to do, you know? It is a very good place to start.”
“I’m completely involved in the development of the bike. We test new stuff and new updates to the motorcycle. Of course, the racing is not really the main part of my plan, at the moment. We’ll continue to develop the bike and we’ll see how that goes and then maybe I will do some racing. At the moment that is still far away because we much work to do to be in front in the moto world. It’s still time to do some work.
“We were testing last week for three days and now this week we are going to test the next few days. Of course, every time I test I tell the guys everything and they go back to the workshop and the factory and prepare the parts. Often times it takes quite a while because everything is still a prototype at the moment.”
“You know, for me, this opportunity to go to the Ducati brand is nice and I really enjoy it. Being a team manager for me came a bit too early. Last year I was manager of the KTM Factory Team and now it is more riding. I still really enjoy it because I’m still quite fit. I can ride and test and for me it is very interesting at the moment. To be a team manager, I will have time later on.”
“We are riding a couple times a week. We have been testing and trying to make the bike ready because Alessandro Lupino, my other teammate and tester for Ducati, has a race next week. We have the first Italian Championship event and he has to race it. This week and next week I am trying to set up the bike the best way possible. I’ve been quite busy testing lately. At the moment this is the plan. We are trying to develop the bike for him to be as prepared for this approaching race as possible.”
Still very much a world class racer at heart, Cairoli pointed out that if all goes well and goes to plan in the early research and development stages, he would very much like to line up behind a starting gate and compete upon the new Ducati this summer.
“If the bike reacts good and we have good response and I am happy enough on it, yeah, for sure I would like to do some racing this year. We don’t know which kind of racing or which races, but I would love to do some racing. When it comes to testing, the best part of it is the racing. That’s a good thing.”
A beloved racer the world over, be it as a competitor or even as just a retired multifold World Champion, Cairoli has been amazed with the positive and enthusiastic reception he’s received from motocross fans from all corners of planet Earth.
“Yeah, I have gotten so much good feedback from all over the world,” mentioned a very enthused Cairoli. “My fans are really excited about this project. Everybody is really pumped about this. But of course, we need to be realistic and we know it is a completely new bike and we need to be patient and see what we need to do to and what we need to work on to make the best bike possible. For sure it takes time. It is not something quick.”
So, can Ducati do well in global motocross and supercross competition?
“Yeah, for sure. I mean Ducati is a brand that goes to win all the time and in every discipline and for sure we will try our best to make it to the top. The podium is our goal. Whenever we line up for the World Championship, we will go for this. For me and being Italian and having the opportunity to launch this big project for Ducati and its very first motocross bike is fantastic and let’s see what we can do.”
