Haarup e McLellan al loro debutto in Triumph nella gara d’apertura spagnola

Mikkel Haarup e Camden McLellan di Monster Energy Triumph Racing hanno corso con successo il round di apertura del campionato spagnolo di motocross con l’esperto Haarup che ha ottenuto due secondi posti e McLellan che ha portato a casa la sua TF 250-X con un quarto e un terzo posto. L’evento tenutosi sull’ex circuito GP di Talavera de la Reina ha segnato la prima uscita competitiva di motocross della nuovissima Triumph TF 250-X.

Mikkel ha iniziato il fine settimana alla grande conducendo dal cancello alla bandiera nella gara di qualificazione di sabato. Portando quello slancio nella manche di apertura MX2 di domenica, il talentuoso giovane danese ha preso un importantissimo Holeshot, che ha dato il via a una battaglia per il comando con il futuro vincitore della gara Lucas Coenen. Per gran parte del primo terzo di gara Mikkel ha lottato duramente con il suo rivale belga prima di mantenere il secondo posto e stabilizzarsi su un ritmo positivo durante la seconda metà di gara. Consapevole del fatto che stava correndo su una pista ben irrigata e in alcuni punti ombreggiata, Mikkel ha completato la gara al secondo posto. Incapace di ottenere la partenza di cui aveva bisogno, Camden ha lottato per tutta la manche per ottenere un meritato quarto posto.

Cercando di completare la loro partecipazione all’apertura della stagione spagnola con risultati positivi, la seconda e ultima manche della MX2 ha visto Mikkel mancare di poco l’holeshot con Camden sepolto nel gruppo mentre usciva dalla curva di apertura. Completando due gare molto diverse, Mikkel ha messo a segno una prestazione solida e costante ottenendo il suo secondo posto della giornata, mentre Camden è stato costretto a risalire dalla top 20 al primo giro fino a raggiungere la terza posizione alla bandiera a scacchi. .

Il team Monster Energy Triumph Racing tornerà alle competizioni a Sommières, in Francia, tra due settimane.

Mikkel Haarup: “Il nostro primo fine settimana di gara nel 2024, facendo ciò che amiamo fare, ed è stato così divertente. L’intero team del Monster Energy Triumph Racing è stato fantastico ed è fantastico tornare a casa con due Holeshots e due secondi posti: non avrei potuto chiedere di più. C’è ancora del lavoro da fare, sappiamo dove possiamo migliorare, ma è bello correre. Adesso abbiamo avviato questo fantastico progetto e non vedo l’ora che arrivi la prossima gara pre-campionato e continui a lavorare verso il primo GP”.

Camden McLellan: “È stato fantastico correre questo fine settimana. È stata una pausa così lunga, lunga, che essere finalmente di nuovo dietro il cancello è stato così bello. È stata una giornata un po’ agrodolce per me oggi, non sono sceso dal cancello in nessuna delle mie manche e sabato ho anche lottato con un piccolo indurimento alle braccia, quindi questo ha reso le cose difficili. Sto cogliendo molti aspetti positivi dal modo in cui ho migliorato la mia guida oggi, quindi lavorerò sulle mie partenze nelle prossime settimane, così spero di potermi mettere in testa e lottare con Mikkel e gli altri. Ma è stato un fine settimana fantastico per la squadra ed è fantastico per me e Mikkel salire sul podio”.

Vincent Bereni – Team Manager Monster Energy Triumph Racing: “Nel complesso, direi che è stato un fine settimana positivo per noi e per la nuova TF 250-X. Ovviamente, oggi è stato un grande, grande giorno per tutti coloro che sono coinvolti nel Monster Energy Triumph Racing; è stato svolto così tanto lavoro in molti, molti mesi e tornare a correre è davvero speciale. Penso che possiamo dire che questo è stato un grande primo passo per la squadra e per la nuova moto. Possiamo avere molti aspetti positivi, ma anche competere in questo evento pre-campionato ci aiuta a valutare dove siamo nel complesso. Mikkel ha fatto tre ottime partenze, ed è stato bello da vedere, e ha lottato duramente durante tutte le gare. Camden ha faticato un po’ in partenza, quindi abbiamo del lavoro da fare lì, ma ancora una volta abbiamo visto un’ottima determinazione da parte sua. Questo fine settimana è stato dedicato alle gare, all’apprendimento e al miglioramento, sono felice che sia quello che abbiamo fatto, ora andiamo di nuovo a lavorare e non vediamo l’ora di correre di nuovo tra due settimane in Francia”.

Ian Kimber – Responsabile dei programmi fuoristrada, Triumph Motorcycles: La gara pre-campionato nel campionato spagnolo ha mostrato un buon inizio per il team MX2 nei preparativi per il prossimo calendario del Campionato del mondo di motocross, in vista della prima gara in Argentina. Ciò ha consentito alla squadra un buon shakedown e l’opportunità di concentrarsi su dove è possibile apportare miglioramenti. È positivo ottenere un 2-4 e un 2-3, oltre a una serie di Holeshots nel corso delle gare. Mikkel e Camden stanno dimostrando quanto si trovino a loro agio sulla moto e quanto velocemente si siano adattati, permettendo loro di alzare il ritmo di gara e lottare immediatamente per il podio. È stato un inizio davvero promettente in Spagna e costituisce una buona base per la preparazione della squadra in vista della stagione”.

Haarup and McLellan on their Triumph debut at Spanish opener

Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Mikkel Haarup and Camden McLellan have successfully raced the opening round of the Spanish Motocross Championship with the experienced Haarup earning two second-place results and McLellan bringing his TF 250-X home with fourth and third-place finishes. The event held at the former GP circuit of Talavera de la Reina marked the first ever competitive motocross outing of the all-new Triumph TF 250-X.

Mikkel kicked off the weekend strongly by leading from gate-to-flag in Saturday’s qualifying race. Carrying that momentum into Sunday’s opening MX2 moto, the talented young Dane took an all-important holeshot, which set up a battle for the lead with eventual race winner Lucas Coenen. For much of the opening third of the race Mikkel fought hard with his Belgian rival before holding the runner-up position and settling into a positive rhythm during the second half of the race. Mindful of the fact that he was racing on a well-watered and in places, shadowy track, Mikkel completed the race in second. Unable to get the start he needed, Camden battled his way forward throughout the moto to claim a well-deserved fourth.

Looking to round out their participation in the Spanish season opener with positive results, the second and final MX2 moto saw Mikkel narrowly miss out on the holeshot with Camden buried in the pack as he exited the opening corner. Completing two very different races, Mikkel posted a solid, consistent performance to claim his second runner-up result of the day, while Camden was forced to work his way from outside the top 20 on lap one to an eventual third position at the chequered flag.

The Monster Energy Triumph Racing team will return to competition in Sommières, France in two weeks’ time.

Mikkel Haarup: “Our first weekend racing in 2024, doing what we love to do, and it’s been so much fun. The whole Monster Energy Triumph Racing crew have been amazing and to come away with two holeshots and two second-place results feels great – I couldn’t have asked for much more. There’s still work to do, we know where we can improve, but it’s great to be racing. We’ve got the wheels turning on this awesome project now and I’m really looking forwards to the next pre-season race and continuing to build towards the first GP.”

Camden McLellan: “It’s been awesome to be racing this weekend. It’s been such a long, long off season, to finally be back behind the gate felt so good. It was a bit of a bittersweet day for me today, I didn’t get off the gate in any of my motos and also struggled with a little arm pump on Saturday, so that made things tough. I’m taking a lot of positives in the way I improved my riding today, so I’ll be working on my starts during the coming weeks so I can I hopefully get myself up front and be battling with Mikkel and the others. But it’s been a great weekend for the team and awesome for Mikkel and myself to be on the podium.”

Vincent Bereni – Monster Energy Triumph Racing Team Manager: “Overall, I would say that it’s been a positive weekend for us and the new TF 250-X. Obviously, today was a big, big day for everyone involved with Monster Energy Triumph Racing; so much work has been put in over many, many months, and to be back racing is very special. I think we can say this was a big first step for the team and the new bike. We can take a lot of positives, but also competing at this pre-season event helps us evaluate where we are at overall. Mikkel had three great starts, which was good to see, and battled hard during all the races. Camden struggled a little off the starts, so we have some work to do there, but again we saw some very good determination from him. This weekend was all about racing, learning, and improving, I’m happy that’s what we did, we now go away to work again and look forward to racing again in two weeks’ time in France.”

Ian Kimber – Head of Off-Road Programmes, Triumph Motorcycles: The pre-season race in the Spanish championship showed a solid start for the MX2 team in their preparations for the upcoming Motocross World Championship calendar, ahead of the first race in Argentina. It has allowed the team a good shakedown and the opportunity to focus on where improvements can be made. It’s positive to take a 2-4 and a 2-3, plus a number of holeshots through the races. Mikkel and Camden are showing how comfortable they are on the bike and how quickly they have adapted to it, allowing them to get up to race pace and contend for podium places immediately. It’s been a really promising start in Spain and sets a good baseline for the team preparations ahead of the season.”
