Ovviamente l’attuale situazione politica è molto difficile, l’anno scorso correvi nei campionati nazionali di Regno Unito e Olanda e ora tutto è momentaneamente fermo.
Penso a tutti gli atleti russi che vengono danneggiati da questa situazione come Medvedev nel tennis, tu e Brylyakov per il motocross ecc.
Cosa stai cercando di fare fare per superare questo?
La situazione è difficile e hai ragione che gli atleti russi non hanno nulla a che fare con questo, ci sono tanti ragazzi che avevano in programma di correre in Europa, la maggior parte di loro vive in Europa da molti anni, ma non possono correre perché hanno un passaporto russo.
Riguardo a me, non posso nemmeno correre nei Paesi Bassi, dove ho vissuto negli ultimi 15 anni.
La FIM ha avvertito la Federazione Canadese dicendo loro che se mi avessero lasciato correre li avrebbero tolti dalla World SX Series e non si sarebbero affiliati a loro.
All’inizio dell’anno ti allenavi negli Usa con Webb e Lawrence. Avevi in programma di correre l’Ama National?
Io e il mio team siamo andati negli Stati Uniti per prepararci alla stagione e per lavorare sulla messa a punto della moto. Il piano era quello di correre il campionato britannico e 9 round del AMA National.
Sempre più piloti ultimamente sembrano voler andare negli Stati Uniti. Abbiamo visto con i fratelli Lawrence, Anstie, Tony, Lars Van Berkel e ora il nuovo campione del mondo MX2 Vialle pronto ad emigrare nel 2023. Qual è la tua opinione?
Prima di tutto è davvero bello correre lì. I tracciati sono ben preparati. Anche il sistema di premi in denaro per i piloti è buono, possono guadagnare denaro alle gare.. e anche in maniera consistente.
Vediamo infatti che ad ogni gara del National il cancello di partenza è pieno.
Se corri in MXGP da privato… non guadagni nulla.
Cosa ne pensi dell’esperienza di Tony lì? Sei rimasto sorpreso dai suoi risultati o pensi che avrebbe potuto fare diversamente?
Per me Tony è andato lì solo per divertirsi e provare qualcosa di diverso. Se avesse voluto davvero andare la per vincere, avremmo visto Tony correre in modo diverso.
Hai mai avuto offerte per trasferirti negli USA?
Si negli anni ho avuto alcune offerte.
Ripensando alla tua carriera, qual è il tuo ricordo più bello?
Il mio ricordo più bello è quando sono venuto per la prima volta in Europa senza conoscere una parola di inglese. I miei anni preferiti sono stati:
2010 con Neil Prince e Cas Honda.
2011 con Martin Honda quando ho vinto in Germania.
2015 con HRC Honda dove ho finito al 3° posto nella MXGP.
Ad essere sincero, ho molti bei ricordi, anche quando andavo in Giappone al quartier generale della Honda, a testare le nuove moto, ho incontrato così tante brave persone lì e in tutto il mondo.
E qualcosa di cui ti penti o avresti dovuto fare diversamente?
Non cambierei assolutamente nulla. Sono qui ora come sono, nel mio posto felice dove voglio essere con la mia famiglia perfetta.
Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il prossimo futuro?
Al momento sto sviluppando qualcosa di segreto….. e diventerà qualcosa di grande in futuro.

Obviously, the current political situation is not ideal, you were racing in Uk and Holland national championships last year and now everything is
temporarily stopped.
I think that the Russian athletes have nothing to do with this…also thinking about Medvedev in tennis, you and Brylyakov for motocross etc.
What are you trying to do to overcome this?
The situation is difficult and you’re right that Russian athletes have nothing to do with this, there are so many kids who planned to race in Europe, most of them have been living in Europe for many years, but they can’t race because they have a Russian passport.
About me, i can’t even race in the Netherlands where I’ve been living for the last 15 years. Even the Canadian Federation got the warning from FIM if they would let me race they will split them from World SX series, and they would have not affiliated with them.
At the beginning of the year you were training in the Usa with Webb and Lawrence. Was it your plan to go racing the Ama National?
My team and me went to the USA to get ready for the season and to work on the setup of the bike. The plan was to race the British championship and 9 rounds of the AMA national.
More and more riders lately looks like they want to go to USA. We’ve seen with Lawrence’s brothers, Anstie, Tony, Lars Van Berkel and now the new MX2 World Champion Vialle to go there in 2023. What’s your opinion?
First of all it’s really nice to race there. Tracks are well prepared. Also the prize-money system for the privateers is good, they can make money at the races from the organizer and some consistent money. We see that at every race of the AMA national the starting gate is full. Racing MXGP as a privateer, you’re not making any money.
What do you think about Tony’s experience there? You were surprised by his results or think he could have done better?
For me Tony went there only to have fun and try something different. If he would have set his mind to win races we would have seen Tony racing differently.
Have you ever had offers to go there?
Few times I had the option to race there.
Re-thinking about your career, what is your best memory?
My best memory was when I came for the first time to Europe without knowing any word of English. My favourite years were:
2010 with Neil Prince and Cas Honda.
2011 with Martin Honda when I won in Germany.
2015 with HRC Honda 3th place at MXGP.
To be honest I have a lot of good memories, also when I was traveling
to Japan to Honda HQ, testing new bikes, I met so many good people there
and around the world.
And something you regret or you should have done differently?
I wouldn’t change anything at all. I am here now how I am, in my happy place where I should be with my perfect family.
What are your plans for the near future?
At moment I’m developing something secret….. and it will become big in the future.
