Tabella rossa leader della serie MXGP per Romain Febvre a due GP da disputare
Romain Febvre si dirige agli ultimi due round del campionato 2021 FIM World MXGP Motocross con la tabella rossa del leader della serie montata sul suo Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team KX450-SR.
Con soli tre punti che separano i primi tre del campionato MXGP diretti agli ultimi tre round, l’atmosfera per il terzo GP in otto giorni sul tornante di Pietramurata all’ombra delle Dolomiti italiane era già elettrizzante prima delle gare. Quarto tempo in qualifica, dopo aver segnato tre giri a mezzo secondo dalla pole, per l’asso francese della Kawasaki è stato lo scenario perfetto in quanto ha potuto scegliere con cura un cancello lontano dal potenziale sbarramento dei suoi rivali per garantire piazza pulita attraverso il primi due turni. È uscito in sicurezza al sesto posto, stretto tra i suoi rivali per il titolo, dietro un quartetto di veloci gaters. Ciascuno dei candidati al titolo era chiaramente consapevole che un singolo errore poteva rivelarsi costoso mentre si inseguivano inizialmente, ma dieci minuti dopo l’inizio della gara è stato Febvre a dare il via al primo assalto; dopo aver scambiato una mezza dozzina di posizioni con il rivale davanti a lui, ha finalmente fatto il sorpasso e si è subito allontanato, lasciando che gli altri inseguitori del campionato si impicciassero a vicenda. Nel giro di un paio di giri la Kawasaki ha messo altri piloti tra sé ei suoi rivali e, essendosi spostato secondo a metà gara, ha costruito un vantaggio di dodici secondi prima che uno dei due potesse comandare il terzo. Il leader di tutta la gara aveva ancora diversi secondi di vantaggio, ma il francese si è avvicinato e a un giro dalla fine aveva il leader e un altro potenziale guadagno di tre punti nel mirino. Ora con un sicuro vantaggio di 22 secondi sul terzo, l’uomo in Green ha gettato al vento la cautela ma, lanciato di lato su una rampa piena di solchi, è stato scaraventato contro la recinzione a bordo pista. L’incidente ha posto fine a tutte le speranze di vittoria della manche, ma non è costato punti in quanto ha avuto tutto il tempo per riprendersi e finire comunque secondo sicuro. Un interruttore del cancello per gara due si è ritorto contro e Romain è stato bloccato all’inizio per lasciare la curva due fuori dalla top ten, ma un giro di apertura ispirato lo ha visto avanzare al sesto posto e ha mantenuto lo slancio in una classifica combattuta per arrivare finalmente al terzo posto sicuro dopo otto giri turbolenti. I piloti ancora davanti a lui avevano già approfittato di una pista libera per fuggire, quindi, sicuro che avrebbe portato la tabella rossa del leader della classifica al penultimo round del prossimo fine settimana, si è saggiamente accontentato del terzo posto. A due GP da disputare domenica prossima e poi il mercoledì successivo a Mantova, a 135 chilometri di distanza, solo tre punti separano le prime tre del campionato…con la Kawasaki al volante!
Il compagno di squadra KRT Mathys Boisrame ha iniziato la giornata in modo impressionante con un undicesimo tempo in qualifica, ma la sua prima manche era effettivamente finita già nel giro iniziale quando un altro pilota lo ha colpito alla fine delle wave, danneggiando la moto. Desideroso di sfruttare il tempo in pista, ha perseverato fino alla fine, tornando in avanti fino al ventiquattresimo e rimanendo sullo stesso giro dei primi fino a quando non si è spostato galantemente sulla bandiera a scacchi per evitare interferenze. Il nuovo arrivato della MXGP ha finalmente ottenuto una corsa pulita attraverso le prime curve in gara due per mantenere un sicuro decimo posto nelle prime fasi, andando avanti al nono per tenere a bada uno dei rivali del campionato del compagno di squadra Febvre per tre giri a metà gara prima di finire undicesimo .
Romain Febvre: “Abbiamo lavorato sulla partenza anche questa settimana e la prima manche è andata bene, ma non la seconda. Ma oggi mi sentivo davvero bene e potevo fare dei bei sorpassi per arrivare secondo nella prima manche. Jeremy stava andando molto bene davanti ma a due giri dalla fine ho visto che lo stavo raggiungendo; avevamo un gap quindi sapevo che se avessi commesso un errore avrei potuto essere ancora secondo. Sfortunatamente ho avuto un incidente piuttosto grave; Sono andato giù forte ma per fortuna non ho nemmeno i graffi. La mia partenza non è stata molto buona nella seconda manche ed ero molto indietro, ma ho superato qualcosa come otto ragazzi nel primo giro, sono arrivato terzo e sono arrivato vicino a Jeremy quando ha commesso un errore. Poi ho iniziato a pensare troppo: vado per il GP o mi accontento della tabella rossa? – e alla fine ho perso il ritmo. È bello prendere la tabella rossa con due gare alla fine. Non sento alcuna pressione; Prendo sempre tutto come viene. Sono passati diversi anni da quando sono stato in questa posizione e siamo così vicini; ancora una volta solo tre punti per tre piloti. È bello essere dove sono, ma alla fine uno di noi sarà campione e due saranno delusi. Se cado, cado, ma di sicuro darò il massimo e speriamo che sia abbastanza. Sento il sapore del campionato!“
Mathys Boisrame: “Certo che sto ancora imparando la mia nuova classe; abbiamo cambiato diverse cose sulla moto da Arco 2 per adattarlo al mio stile di guida e ho fatto una buona sessione di qualifiche per l’undicesimo gate-pick. La mia prima partenza non è stata eccezionale e poi un altro pilota mi ha colpito alla fine delle wave; la moto era danneggiata ma volevo finire la gara anche se ero a corto di punti perché il tempo in pista è il modo in cui impari la moto e la classe. La mia partenza è stata molto migliore nella seconda manche e ho trovato un buon ritmo per conquistare un undicesimo posto. Sono contento della mia guida; fisicamente non è stato facile fare tre gare in una settimana con una moto nuova ma sono contento dei progressi e non vedo l’ora di arrivare a Mantova”.

MXGP series leader red plate for Romain Febvre with two GPs to go
With just three points separating the top three in the MXGP championship headed into the final three rounds the atmosphere for the third GP in eight days at the Pietramurata switchback in the shadow of the Italian Dolomites was electric already before racing. Fourth-fastest time in Qualifying, having set three laps within half a second of pole, for Kawasaki’s French ace was the perfect scenario as he could carefully choose a gate away from the potential bar-banging of his rivals to ensure a clean sweep through the first two turns. He emerged safely in sixth place, sandwiched between his title rivals, behind a quartet of quick gaters. Each of the title candidates was clearly aware that a single error could prove costly as they stalked each other initially but ten minutes into the race it was Febvre who started the first assault; after trading places half-a-dozen times with the rival ahead of him, he finally made the pass stick and immediately raced clear, leaving the other championship chasers to get in each others’ hair. Within a couple of laps the Kawasaki was putting others riders between himself and his rivals and, having moved second at half-distance, he built a twelve-second advantage before either of them could command third. The race-long leader was still several seconds clear but the Frenchman edged closer and with a lap to go had the leader, and another potential three-point gain, in his sights. Now holding a safe twenty-two second advantage over third the man in Green threw caution to the wind but, pitched sideways on a rutted take-off, was cast into the trackside fence. The incident ended any hopes of the moto win but didn’t cost any points as he had plenty of time to pick himself up and still finish a secure second. A switch of gate for race two backfired and Romain was boxed in at the start to leave turn two way outside the top ten but an inspired opening lap saw him advance to sixth and he maintained the momentum in a hard-fought leaderboard to finally make third secure after eight turbulent laps. The riders still ahead of him had already taken advantage of a clear track to escape so, secure in the knowledge that he would take the red plate of the series points leader to the penultimate round next weekend, he sensibly settled for third. With two GPs remaining next Sunday and then the following Wednesday at Mantova, 135 kilometres away, just three points separate the top three in the championship … with the Kawasaki in the driving seat!
KRT teammate Mathys Boisrame started the day impressively with eleventh-fastest time in Qualifying but his first moto was effectively over already on the opening lap as another rider cannoned into him at the end of the waves, damaging the bike. Keen to take advantage of race track-time he persisted to the close, moving back forward to twenty-fourth and staying on the same lap as the leaders until he gallantly moved over on the run-in to the chequered flag to avoid interference. The MXGP newcomer finally got a clean run through the first few turns in race two to hold a secure tenth in the early early stages, moving forward to ninth to hold off one of teammate Febvre’s championship rivals for three laps mid-moto before eventually finishing eleventh.
Romain Febvre: “We worked on the start again this week and the first moto was good, but not the second. But I was feeling really good today and could make some nice passes to come to second in the first moto. Jeremy was riding really well in front but with two laps to go I saw that I was catching him; we had a gap so I knew that if I made a mistake I could still be second. Unfortunately I had quite a big crash but it didn’t affect me; I went down hard but luckily I don’t even have scratches. My start was not so good in the second moto and I was a long way back but I passed something like eight guys on the first lap, worked my way to third and came close to Jeremy when he made a mistake. Then I started thinking too much – do I go for the GP or settle for the red plate? – and in the end I lost my pace. It feels good to take the red plate with two to go. I don’t feel any pressure; I always take everything as it comes. It is several years since I have been in this position and we are so close; again just three points for three riders. It’s good to be where I am but in the end one of us will be champion and two will be disappointed. If I crash, then I crash but for sure I will give my best and let us hope it is enough. I can smell the taste of the championship!“
Mathys Boisrame: “Of course I’m still learning my new class; we changed several things on the bike since Arco 2 to suit my riding style and I had a good Qualifying session for eleventh gate-pick. My first start was not that great and then another rider hit me at the end of the waves; the bike was damaged but I wanted to finish the race even if I was out of points as track time is the way you learn the bike and the class. My start was much better in the second moto and I found a good rhythm to score an eleventh position. I’m happy with my riding; physically it was not easy to do three races in one week on a new bike but I’m happy with the progression and I can’t wait to arrive at Mantova.”
