MONACO (Principato di Monaco) agosto 2021 – Il campionato mondiale di motocross FIM dà slancio al settimo round della serie con l’ MXGP della Lettonia questo fine settimana sul circuito tecnico di sabbia di Kegums.
Il Gran Premio di Lettonia concluderà un periodo di quattro settimane di gare prima di iniziare una pausa di tre settimane prima del doppio appuntamento turco.
La scorsa stagione Kegums ha ospitato il primissimo, nella storia del motocross, triple-header che ha dato il via alla stagione 2020 dopo una lunga pausa a causa di un blocco mondiale. Le tre gare hanno avuto un successo incredibile e hanno visto le vittorie di Glenn Coldenhoff, Antonio Cairoli e Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP, mentre in MX2 è stato Tom Vialle a vincere il primo GP, mentre Jago Geerts ha dominato gli ultimi due.
La prima gara che si è svolta nella sede lettone è stata nel 2005 con Sven Breugelmans che ha vinto nella categoria MX3, mentre Marcus Norlen ha vinto nella classe 125cc. Il primo Gran Premio ufficiale che si è svolto a Kegums è stato nel 2009, con Antonio Cairoli che ha vinto l’allora MX1 e Rui Goncalves ha vinto in MX2.
Quest’anno torniamo a Kegums per l’ 11° anno, 12con il conteggio del 2014 Monster Energy FIM Motocross delle Nazioni, per quello che sarà un altro Gran Premio interessante e le cose si fanno più intense nei campionati MXGP e MX2.
Le gare di questo fine settimana saranno anche il quarto round dei campionati EMX250 ed EMX Open . Nella EMX250, Nicholas Lapucci del Fantic Factory Team Maddii cercherà di continuare la sua striscia di podi e ha esteso il suo vantaggio di 26 punti su Kevin Horgmo di SM Action YUASA Battery Racing Team e Rick Elzinga di TBS Covers Racing.
Nell’EMX Open, Davide De Bortoli entra nel quarto round di sei, come leader del campionato sul pilota della Honda SR Motoblouz Nicolas Dercourt che è a quattro punti di distanza e Simone Croci che è terzo ad ulteriori 15 punti di distacco.

In MXGP, Romain Febvre del Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team entrerà nella gara lettone con una grande spinta di fiducia dalla sua prima vittoria in assoluto in un Gran Premio a Lommel lo scorso fine settimana. Non solo, ma l’anno scorso Febvre ha ottenuto il suo primo podio della stagione a Kegums durante l’MXGP della Lettonia alla sua prima uscita dopo l’infortunio, quindi ci si può aspettare grandi cose dal francese che ora è secondo nella classifica del campionato. Febvre ha spinto al massimo in questa stagione per le vittorie di gara e una vittoria generale e in Belgio ha ottenuto entrambe le cose, quindi forse ora sarà più rilassato sapendo che aveva ottenuto queste cose la scorsa settimana e avrà meno pressione in futuro.
Mentre l’attuale leader del campionato MXGP, Tim Gajser del Team HRC cercherà di riprendersi dopo due gare difficili in Repubblica Ceca e Belgio, dove ha perso alcuni punti vitali per il campionato. Anche la tripletta lettone dell’anno scorso non è stata la più facile per lo sloveno che ha subito due DNF, ma si spera che questa volta sarà diverso, e sarà in grado di riprendersi e tornare a vincere.
Antonio Cairoli della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing cercherà senza dubbio di tornare sul podio in Lettonia dopo aver interrotto la sua serie di quattro GP a Lommel. L’anno scorso Cairoli ha vinto il secondo dei tre eventi a Kegums, quindi chiaramente ha le carte in regola per vincere le gare sul circuito di sabbia dura. Anche il suo compagno di squadra Jorge Prado spingerà per un altro podio dopo un quarto posto in Belgio, visto che Jeffrey Herlings continuerà il suo scioccante ritorno alle corse e senza dubbio fornirà risultati ancora più impressionanti, dopo una vittoria di gara a Lommel appena due settimane dopo essersi rotto la scapola.
Mentre i piloti Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP si riuniranno senza dubbio in forze mentre cercheranno di lasciarsi alle spalle lo sfortunato Gran Premio del Belgio. Per Glenn Coldenhoff l’MXGP della Lettonia conserva alcuni ricordi speciali poiché nel 2015 si è assicurato la sua prima gara MXGP e vittorie complessive, mentre la scorsa stagione ha aggiunto a ciò dando a GasGas la sua prima vittoria assoluta in MXGP, poiché è stato vittorioso al primo evento di tre. Nel frattempo Jeremy Seewer cercherà di recuperare alcuni punti e tornare in lizza dopo un inizio lento della sua stagione 2021, mentre Ben Watson continua ad adattarsi alla classe competitiva e spera in risultati più forti nella top 10.
Questo fine settimana sarà speciale per Pauls Jonas di Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing che si dirigerà verso il suo Gran Premio di casa dopo il suo primo podio una settimana prima in Belgio. Finora Jonass è andato forte in questa stagione ed era solo questione di tempo prima che lo vedessimo sul podio mentre si spingeva costantemente dentro i primi cinque e dintorni. Con il suo primo podio della stagione 2021 alle spalle, vediamo se può farlo sul suolo di casa o addirittura vincere a Kegums per la prima volta in assoluto.
Per Arminas Jasikonis di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing la gara lettone è la cosa più vicina a un GP di casa, con i fan lituani che fanno sempre il breve viaggio attraverso il confine per supportare l’alto lituano. Jasikonis continua il suo ritorno da un trauma cranico e finora ha mostrato ottimi risultati in questa stagione, con alcuni piazzamenti tra i primi 10. La scorsa stagione Jasikonis ha vinto la sua prima gara GP in assoluto a Kegums, quindi vediamo se questa volta riuscirà a ottenere altri risultati migliori.

In MX2, Maxime Renaux di Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing continua a guidare il campionato con un vantaggioso vantaggio di 26 punti su Mattia Guadagnini di Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. Renaux ha avuto un buon weekend in Belgio andando 2-3 per il terzo posto assoluto, mentre il weekend di Guadagnini è stato difficile. L’italiano 14-10 dopo una brutta caduta in partenza in gara uno, con il resto del weekend che da lì è andato a gonfie vele.
Questo fine settimana Renaux punterà a un altro buon fine settimana con risultati consistenti per aumentare il suo vantaggio, mentre Guadagnini vorrà lasciarsi alle spalle i problemi di Lommel e raccogliere alcuni punti vitali per il campionato a Kegums dato che ha la Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez con il fiato sul collo in classifica in quanto è a un solo punto di distanza dall’italiano. Fernandez ha concluso 6° assoluto in Belgio e non è salito sul podio da Matterley Basin, quindi è in ritardo per alcune gare forti.
Anche Jago Geerts di Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing, che si avvicina di più al campionato, ha avuto un fine settimana stellare nella sua gara di casa lo scorso fine settimana. È andato 1-2 per prendere la vittoria generale e recuperare il terreno perso la scorsa stagione durante il triplo incontro belga. Quei 47 punti che ha raccolto a Lommel hanno fatto miracoli per la sua caccia al titolo mentre si porta al quarto posto in classifica ea soli due punti dal secondo posto. Questo fine settimana il belga cercherà senza dubbio qualche punto in più per tornare in corsa per il titolo poiché era uno dei favoriti per la vittoria all’inizio della stagione.
Mathys Boisrame di F&H Kawasaki Racing è un altro pilota da tenere d’occhio in Lettonia poiché vorrà riprendersi da Lommel e tornare sul podio. La scorsa stagione in Lettonia, il francese ha ottenuto due podi consecutivi, essendo stato terzo assoluto nei primi due GP quindi, è uno dei favoriti per il fine settimana, mentre il suo compagno di squadra Roan Van De Moosdijk che ha avuto anche una buona corsa a Kegums la scorsa stagione, quest’anno salterà la gara lettone a causa di un infortunio.
Kay De Wolf di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing continuerà la sua stagione da rookie di successo dopo la vittoria in gara e il secondo assoluto a Lommel, poiché entrerà nel GP di Lettonia più fiducioso che mai. Il giovane olandese ha disputato delle belle gare con il compagno di squadra Jed Beaton, con la coppia spesso tra i primi cinque e i primi dieci e sarebbe bello vederli di nuovo entrambi sul podio, visto che De Wolf è salito sul podio in Lettonia la scorsa stagione in la classe EMX250.
Naturalmente, questo fine settimana vedremo anche Tom Vialle della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing continuare il suo ritorno alle corse dopo essere arrivato settimo assoluto a Lommel, con P4 in gara 1. È chiaro che Vialle sta ancora riprendendo velocità, ma gira già bene con i primi e ha solo bisogno di due gare consistenti. Nel frattempo anche il suo compagno di squadra Rene Hofer ha fatto delle buone gare in questa stagione e spera di continuare questa corsa e, si spera, di lottare ancora tra i primi cinque questo fine settimana.

MXGP heads to Kegums for Latvian Grand Prix
MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 4 August 2021 – The FIM Motocross World Championship carries momentum into the seventh round of the series with the MXGP of Latvia this weekend at the technical sand circuit of Kegums.
The Latvian Grand Prix will conclude a four-week stint of races before we head into a three week break ahead of the Turkish double-header.
Last season Kegums hosted the very first, in the history of motocross, triple-header which kick-started the 2020 season after a long break due to a worldwide lockdown. The three races were incredibly successful and saw victories from Glenn Coldenhoff, Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP, while in MX2 it was Tom Vialle who won the first GP, while Jago Geerts dominated the last two.
The first race to take place at the Latvian venue was back in 2005 with Sven Breugelmans winning in the MX3 category, while Marcus Norlen was victorious in the 125cc class. The first official Grand Prix to be held in Kegums was in 2009, with Antonio Cairoli winning the then MX1 class and Rui Goncalves victorious in MX2.
This year we return to Kegums for the 11th year, 12 counting the 2014 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, for what will be another interesting Grand Prix as things get more intense in the MXGP and MX2 championships.
This weekend’s races will also the fourth round of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championships. In EMX250, Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Nicholas Lapucci will look to continue his podium streak and extended his 26-point lead over SM Action YUASA Battery Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and TBS Coversions Racing Rick Elzinga.
In EMX Open, Davide De Bortoli enters the fourth round of six, as the championship leader over Honda SR Motoblouz rider Nicolas Dercourt who is four points behind and Simon Croci who is third a further 15 points adrift.
In MXGP, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre will enter the Latvian race with a big confidence boost from his first ever Grand Prix victory in Lommel last weekend. Not only that, but last year Febvre got his first podium of the season in Kegums during the MXGP of Latvia on his first outing since injury, therefore big things can be expected of the Frenchman who is now second in the championship standings. Febvre has been pushing hard this season for race wins and an overall victory and in Belgium he got both, so maybe now he will be more relaxed knowing that he had achieved these things last week and will have less pressure going forward.
While the current MXGP championship leader, Tim Gajser of Team HRC will look to bounce back after two tough races in Czech Republic and Belgium where he lost some vital championship points. Last year’s Latvian triple-header was also not the easiest for the Slovenian who suffered two DNF’s, but hopefully this time around will be different, and he will be able to pick himself up and get back to winning ways.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli will no doubt be looking to get himself back on the podium in Latvia after breaking his four GP podium streak in Lommel. Last year Cairoli won the second of the three events in Kegums, so clearly, he has what it takes to win races on the hard sand circuit. His teammate Jorge Prado will also be pushing for another podium finish after a fourth-place finish in Belgium, as Jeffrey Herlings will continue his shock return to racing and no doubt will deliver some more impressive results, after a race victory in Lommel just two weeks after breaking his shoulder blade.
While the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP riders will no doubt gather in force as they will look to put the unlucky Belgian Grand Prix behind them. For Glenn Coldenhoff the MXGP of Latvia holds some special memories as back in 2015 he secured his first ever MXGP race and overall wins, while last season he added to that giving GasGas their first overall victory in MXGP, as he was victorious at the first event of three. Meanwhile Jeremy Seewer will look to take back some points and get back into contention after a slow start to his 2021 campaign, as Ben Watson continues to adapt to the competitive class and hope for more strong finishes inside the top 10.
This weekend will be special for Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonas who will head into his home Grand Prix following his first podium finish a week earlier in Belgium. Jonass has been looking strong this season so far and it was only a matter of time before we were going to see him on the podium as he consistently pushed inside the top five and thereabouts. With his first podium of the 2021 season under his belt, let’s see if he can do this on home soil or even win in Kegums for the first time ever.
For Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis the Latvian race is the closest thing to a home GP, with Lithuanian fans always making the short trip across the border to support the tall Lithuanian. Jasikonis continues his comeback from a traumatic brain injury and has shown some great results this season so far, with some top 10 finishes. Last season Jasikonis won his first ever GP race in Kegums, so let’s see if he can deliver some more top results this time around.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux continues to lead championship with a healthy 26-point advantage over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini. Renaux had a solid weekend in Belgium going 2-3 for third overall, while Guadagnini’s weekend was difficult. The Italian 14-10 after a nasty start crash in race one, with the rest of the weekend snowballing from there.
This weekend Renaux will aim for another good weekend with consistent results to extend his lead, while Guadagnini will want to put the troubles of Lommel behind him and collect some vital championship points in Kegums as he’s got Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez breathing down his neck in the standings as he is just one point adrift of the Italian. Fernandez finished 6th overall in Belgium and has not been on the podium since Matterley Basin, so he is well overdue some strong races.
Also edging closer in the championship is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who had a stellar weekend at his home race last weekend. He went 1-2 to take the overall win and make up for lost ground last season during the Belgian triple-header. Those 47 points that he picked up in Lommel have done wonders for his title chase as he moves to fourth in the standings and just two points from second place. This weekend the Belgian will no doubt be looking for some more solid points to get back into title contention as he was one of the favourites to win as we entered the season.
F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame is another rider to look out for in Latvia as he will want to bounce back from Lommel and get back on the podium. Last season in Latvia, the Frenchman got two consecutive podiums, as he was third overall in the first two GP’s therefore, he is one of the favourites for the weekend, meanwhile his teammate Roan Van De Moosdijk who also had a strong run in Kegums last year will miss out on the Latvian race due to injury.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolf will continue his successful rookie season after his race win and second overall in Lommel, as he will enter the Latvian GP more confident than ever. The young Dutchman has had some good races with his teammate Jed Beaton with the pair often running inside the top five and top 10 and it would be good to see both on the podium again, as De Wolf finished on the podium in Latvia last season in the EMX250 class.
Of course, this weekend we will also see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle continue his return to racing after finishing seventh overall in Lommel, with P4 in race 1. It is clear that Vialle is still getting back up to speed, but he is already running well with the leaders and just needs two consistent races. Meanwhile his teammate Rene Hofer has also had some good races this season and will hope to continue this run and hopefully battle inside the top five again this weekend.
