Il sollievo di Jonass alla svolta sul podio con GASGAS ed entusiasma i fan per il GP di casa
Pauls Jonass ha ottenuto il suo primo podio con la Standing Construct GASGAS MC450F al Gran Premio del Belgio e l’ex campione del mondo MX2 ha vinto il suo primo trofeo in quasi due anni dopo aver saltato gran parte del 2020 a causa di un infortunio alla schiena.
Jonass è il secondo pilota a portare la GASGAS rossa sul podio MXGP dopo Glenn Coldenhoff nel 2020 e ha gestito l’impresa con un 4-2 a Lommel domenica scorsa, che ha visto il lettone con sede in Belgio guidare un Gran Premio della classe regina per il primo tempo e da quando è entrato nella categoria nel 2019.
“È bello farlo al mio secondo GP di “casa” in Belgio e al GP di casa per la mia squadra”, ha detto domenica. “Avevamo lavorato molto sulle partenze questa settimana perché – come molti hanno potuto vedere – la mia velocità era lì in questa stagione ma mi mancavano le partenze. È una classe così dura che se non parti subito è davvero difficile andare avanti e salire sul podio”.
Il 24enne è 8° nella classifica MXGP ma il suo punteggio è stato intaccato da due mancate reti in Russia e Repubblica Ceca. “Sto costruendo lentamente e ottenendo risultati coerenti, sfortunatamente ci sono stati alcuni ritiri in questa stagione che sono stati costosi, ma sono felice finora”.
Jonass ha vinto il premio Rookie of the Year nel 2019, dove è stato in grado di conquistare tre podi con il team Rockstar Energy IceOne Husqvarna. È stato prontamente abbandonato dall’equipaggio per l’arrivo di Thomas Kjer Olsen per il 2021, ma il suo contratto con il Reparto Corse KTM ha aiutato a raggiungere lo slot aperto con Standing Construct. “Il team Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing ha creduto in me e mi ha dato la possibilità di tornare vicino ai primi posti. Tutti stanno lavorando così duramente; Avevo bisogno di dare loro questo podio”, ha aggiunto a Lommel.
Il settimo round della stagione porterà la MXGP sulla sabbia poco profonda di Kegums; Il circuito di casa di Jonass e dove non ha ancora vinto. È il lettone di maggior successo nella storia di questo sport e ha conquistato la corona MX2 nel 2017, ma è stato uno spettatore frustrato all’edizione tripla del Gran Premio la scorsa estate. Questa volta tornerà nella mischia. “È una bella spinta alla fiducia”, ha detto del suo successo a Lommel solo sette giorni prima del round lettone. “Non ho mai vinto a Kegums sulla 250. Sono salito sul podio alcune volte quindi spero che ci saranno tanti tifosi e di poter tornare sul podio”.

Jonass relief at podium breakthrough with GASGAS and excites fans for home GP
Pauls Jonass posted his first podium finish with the Standing Construct GASGAS MC450F at the Belgian Grand Prix and the former MX2 world champion picked up his first trophy in almost two years after missing most of 2020 with a back injury.
Jonass is the second rider to take the red GASGAS to the MXGP rostrum after Glenn Coldenhoff in 2020 and managed the feat with a 4-2 finish in Lommel last Sunday, which saw the Belgium-based Latvian lead a premier class Grand Prix for the first time and since he jumped into the category in 2019.
“It’s nice to do it at my second ‘home’ GP in Belgium and the home GP for my team,” he said on Sunday. “We’d worked a lot on starts this week because – as many could see – my speed was there this season but I was missing the starts. It is such a tough class that if you don’t get a start then it is really difficult to move forward and to get a podium.”
The 24 year old is 8th in the MXGP standings but his points tally has been dented by two non-scores in Russia and the Czech Republic. “I’ve been slowly building and getting consistent results, unfortunately there have been a few DNFs this season which have been costly but I’m happy so far.”
Jonass won the Rookie of the Year award in 2019 where he was able to take three podium finishes with the Rockstar Energy IceOne Husqvarna team. He was promptly dropped by the crew for the incoming Thomas Kjer Olsen for 2021 but his contract with the KTM Race Department helped towards the open slot with Standing Construct. “The Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing team believed in me and gave me the chance to be back near the top. Everyone is working so hard; I needed to give this podium to them,” he added in Lommel.
Round seven of the season will take MXGP to the shallow sand of Kegums; Jonass’ home circuit and where he has yet to claim victory. He is the most successful Latvian in the history of the sport and claimed the MX2 crown in 2017 but was a frustrated spectator at the triple-header edition of the Grand Prix last summer. This time he will be back in the fray. “It’s a nice confidence boost,” he said of his Lommel achievement only seven days before the Latvian round. “I never won at Kegums on the 250. I made the podium a few times so I hope there will be many fans and I can be back on the box.”
