Punti GP per le Nazioni 2021 da decidere questo mese con l’aumento dell’interesse americano
È probabile che Infront Motor Racing decida se il Motocross delle Nazioni 2021 porterà i punti del campionato mondiale FIM entro la fine di luglio. La controversa politica potrebbe vedere i piloti delle classi MXGP e MX2 migliorare le loro posizioni in classifica per l’incontro annuale del 26 settembre che si inserirà tra i round dieci e undici di MXGP.
Lo schema è nato lo scorso anno sia come un modo per correre il Nazioni (che è stato cancellato nel 2020 a causa della pandemia) – come un “GP” extra, ma anche per garantire che i migliori team e piloti partecipino all’evento che è previsto nella cornice compatta di Mantova, Italia. È probabile che l’attuazione dell’idea si dimostri problematica in quanto alcuni piloti del Grand Prix non formeranno la squadra di tre uomini per il loro paese e alcune nazioni potrebbero non essere nemmeno in grado di partecipare poiché l’Europa cerca ancora di controllare la pandemia.
“Siamo ancora in discussione. Le due possibilità sono sul tavolo”, ha commentato il CEO di Infront Motor Racing David Luongo. “Quello che vogliamo è avere i migliori piloti disponibili per il miglior evento dell’anno. È ancora aperto ma prenderemo una decisione nel prossimo mese. Vogliamo davvero riavere il Motocross delle Nazioni in calendario in modo positivo perché l’anno scorso ci è mancato. Ci piacerebbe avere molto pubblico a Mantova e abbiamo bisogno che le Federazioni facciano una selezione dei migliori piloti. Stiamo discutendo ora con i produttori per capire la loro volontà in merito”.
Si era già parlato a Maggiora al MXGP d’Italia di squadre che cercavano chiarimenti sulla questione. Il “MXoN” del 2021 ha ricevuto una spinta tuttavia dalle notizie di proattività dell’AMA a RedBud per il quarto round del Lucas Oil Pro National lo scorso fine settimana. Apparentemente i funzionari stavano parlando con squadre e piloti per la conferma di una voce per il Team USA. La data di settembre del MXoN è molto più favorevole ai partecipanti alla serie AMA, arrivando appena due settimane dopo la loro ultima gara a Prairie City(Hangtown) in California l’11 settembre. La tradizionale fascia oraria di fine settembre/inizio ottobre per il Nazioni significa che è stata un’aggiunta difficile alle fitte agende americane, con a volte il divario tra i Nazionali e la competizione di 74 anni fino a un mese di distanza.
“È molto buono”, ha osservato Luongo sui movimenti del Team USA che potrebbero essere un precursore del ritorno della corsa attraverso l’Atlantico in Nord America nel 2022. “Abbiamo un ottimo rapporto con i ragazzi laggiù ormai da alcuni anni. Abbiamo visto che con il Nazioni 2018 a RedBud e Roger [De Coster] si è sempre impegnato a portare una buona squadra. Riteniamo che siano molto motivati a venire a competere e pensiamo che torneremo molto presto negli Stati Uniti per il Nazioni”. Luongo non ha potuto confermare se RedBud sarebbe stata la destinazione per il terzo MXoN che si sarebbe svolto sul suolo americano dal 2007. “L’evento RedBud è stato fantastico, quindi sono sicuramente nella short list, ma è ancora troppo presto per annunciare qualcosa.”

GP points for the 2021 Nations to be decided this month as American interest increases
Infront Motor Racing are likely to make a decision on whether the 2021 Motocross of Nations will carry FIM World Championship points by the end of July. The controversial policy could see MXGP and MX2 class riders improve their positions in the standings for the annual meeting on September 26th that is wedged between rounds ten and eleven of MXGP.
The scheme arose last year both as a way of counting the Nations (which was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic) – as an extra ‘GP’ but also to ensure that the top teams and riders take part in the event that is slated to occur in the compact setting of Mantova, Italy. Implementing the idea is likely to prove problematic as some Grand Prix riders will not make the three-man squad for their country and some nations might not even be able to participate as Europe still tries to control the volatile pandemic.
“We are still in discussions. The two possibilities are on the table,” commented Infront Motor Racing CEO David Luongo. “What we want is to have the best riders available for the best event of the year. It’s still open but we will make a decision in the next month. We really want to have the Motocross of Nations back on the calendar in a good way because last year we missed it. We’d like to have a lot of public at Mantova and need to have the Federations making a selection of the best riders. We are discussing now with the manufacturers to understand their will regarding this.”
There was already talk in Maggiora and the MXGP of Italy last weekend of teams seeking clarification over the issue. The 2021 ‘MXoN’ was given a boost however by news of proactivity by the AMA at RedBud for the fourth round of the Lucas Oil Pro National last weekend. Officials were apparently talking to teams and riders for confirmation of an entry for Team USA. The MXoN’s September date is far more favourable to participants in the AMA series, coming just two weeks after their last race at Prairie City in California on September 11th. The traditional end of September/early October slot for the Nations means it was a difficult addition to the busy American agendas, with sometimes the gap between the Nationals and the 74-year-old competition up to a month apart.
“It’s very good,” Luongo remarked on the Team USA movements that could be a precursor to the race moving back across the Atlantic to North America in 2022. “We have a very good relationship with the guys over there now for some years now. We saw that with the 2018 Nations at RedBud and Roger [De Coster] has always committed to bringing a good team. We feel they are very motivated to come and compete, and we think we will be back very soon in the USA for the Nations.” Luongo could not confirm if RedBud would be the destination for the third MXoN to take place on American soil since 2007. “The RedBud event was fantastic, so they are definitely on the short list but it is still too early to announce something.”
