Geerts “non pensa al titolo” dopo il podio italiano MXGP
Jago Geerts di Monster Energy Yamaha ha vinto il suo primo trofeo MX2 della stagione la scorsa settimana a Maggiora per il 3° posto nel Gran Premio d’Italia. Il risultato ha segnato un ritorno alla forma per il belga che ha ottenuto il 12° posto in Russia e l’11° in Gran Bretagna dopo aver fatto i conti con una distorsione al ginocchio sinistro riportato nell’ultima gara internazionale precampionato in Francia. Nonostante il risultato, il 21enne ha momentaneamente ridotto le sue possibilità nel 2021.
Geerts è arrivato secondo nella serie ’20 ed è stato la minaccia più coerente e costante del campione Tom Vialle attraverso una campagna di diciotto round troncata. L’infortunio al ginocchio è stato un duro colpo alla vigilia del campionato 2021 due volte ritardato e Geerts ha dovuto vedere i compagni di squadra Maxime Renaux vincere nel Regno Unito e il debuttante Thibault Benistant rivendicare la prima manche a Maggiora.
“Le prime due gare sono state davvero dure con il mio infortunio al ginocchio, ma sta migliorando molto”, ha affermato Geerts dopo i suoi 4-5 in Italia. “Non ho ancora il ritmo per lottare per la vittoria, ma mi allenerò duramente nelle prossime due settimane”.
Geerts rimane cauto sulle sue prospettive di contendente al titolo, anche se è considerato uno dei favoriti e – ancora – un forte rivale di Vialle mentre la Yamaha insegue il suo primo titolo MX2 dal 2007. Cinque piloti sono divisi da soli 14 punti nella classifica giovane racconto del campionato MX2, con Geerts in bilico settimo e dietro Mattia Guadagnini di 46. “Attualmente non sto pensando al titolo”, dice, “ma è una stagione lunga dove tutto può succedere. Innanzitutto, voglio ottenere il 100% e lottare di nuovo per la vittoria”.
I tre Gran Premi di Sandy dei prossimi quattro round in Olanda, Lettonia e Belgio potrebbero essere il palcoscenico per Geerts per accelerare una scalata in classifica.

Geerts “not thinking about the title” after Italian MXGP podium
Monster Energy Yamaha’s Jago Geerts picked up his first MX2 trophy of the season last week at Maggiora for 3rd place in the Italian Grand Prix. The result marked a return to form for the Belgian who scored 12th in Russia and 11th in Great Britain after dealing with a twisted left knee sustained in the final pre-season international race in France. Despite the achievement the 21-year-old momentarily played down his chances in 2021.
Geerts finished 2nd in the ‘20 series and was champion Tom Vialle’s most consistent and constant threat through a truncated eighteen-round campaign. The knee injury was a blow on the eve of the twice-delayed 2021 championship and Geerts had to watch teammates Maxime Renaux win in the UK and rookie Thibault Benistant claim the first moto in Maggiora.
“The first two races were really tough with my knee injury but it is getting a lot better,” Geerts claimed after his 4-5 in Italy. “I don’t really have the pace yet to battle for the win but I will train hard in the next two weeks.”
Geerts is remaining cautious on his prospects to be title contender, even though he is considered one of the favourites and – again – a strong rival to Vialle as Yamaha chase their first MX2 title since 2007. Five riders are split by just 14 points in the young MX2 championship narrative, with Geerts hovering 7th and trailing Mattia Guadagnini by 46. “Currently I’m not thinking about the title,” he says “but it is a long season where anything can happen. First, I want to get 100% and battle for the win again.”
Sandy Grands Prix in three of the next four rounds in Holland, Latvia and Belgium could be the stage for Geerts to accelerate a climb up the table.
