Jeffrey Herlings decisione AMA National 2019, Pit Beirer “non sono entusiasta” per il passaggio!
Il campione del mondo MXGP Jeffrey Herlings dovrebbe imparare nelle prossime settimane se cambierà i campi della Red Bull KTM e tenterà la serie di motocross AMA Pro National 2019 negli Stati Uniti. Ci sono state continue speculazioni sul fatto che il 24enne potesse fare il cambio da quando ha rotto il piede destro in Spagna alla fine di gennaio. Herlings ha effettuato il suo primo serio check-up lunedì (CLICCA QUI) per valutare l’intervento chirurgico con le fratture multiple e i medici sarebbero stati contenti del progresso della sua guarigione dato che l’olandese aveva rimosso tre fili.
Herlings non dovrebbe ancora guidare il suo 450 SX-F per un altro mese, il che significa che mancherà i Gran Premi in Gran Bretagna, Olanda e Italia ed è quasi certamente fuori combattimento per il titolo del 2019.
Si vocifera che Marvin Musquin, l’attuale pilota AMA Supercross della Red Bull KTM, che presumibilmente richiede un’operazione al ginocchio, significa che uno spiraglio potrebbe essere aperto accanto al leader della serie SX del 2019, Cooper Webb, per i 12 round del campionato americano di motocross con partenza ad Hangtown il 18 maggio, che potrebbe ancora essere uno stimolo per Herlings e raggiungere la forma fisica per la gara.
Herlings ha dichiarato pubblicamente la sua volontà di tentare la competizione AMA dopo essersi allenato con il preparatore Aldon Baker e aver vinto l’ultimo round del Nationals ad Ironman, Indiana nell’estate del 2017. Se effettuerà il trasferimento diventerebbe il primo campione del mondo di prima classe a prendere il comando in terra americana come pilota a tempo pieno del campionato. È persino immaginabile che Herlings potrebbe essere il primo pilota a possedere entrambi i titoli FIM e AMA, se vincesse negli Stati Uniti (La MXGP finisce ad Hong Kong il 22 settembre mentre i Nationals terminano l’ultimo fine settimana di agosto).
KTM non ha alcuna possibilità di perdere la sua stella MXGP, soprattutto perché questo lascerebbe Tony Cairoli – che attualmente detiene la tabella rossa – come unico rappresentante nei GP e una presenza che si è ridotta da tre piloti l’anno scorso a un solo nel 2019.
“È sotto contratto per correre in Europa e non sono entusiasta di questa storia americana perché abbiamo una squadra fantastica con fantastici riders negli Stati Uniti”, ha detto recentemente il direttore Motorsport Pit Beirer alla gara MotoGP in Qatar. “Senza Jeffrey non abbiamo una line-up completa in MXGP e avevamo già apportato tutte queste modifiche con Pauls Jonass trasferito con IceOne. È sempre positivo avere un back-up e un minimo di due top riders, quindi non sono molto contento dell’idea d’andare in America. “
“Non è facile”, ha aggiunto sulla prospettiva di spostare l’elenco dei piloti. “Quello che sarebbe più facile è aggiungere un ragazzo che è già in America. In Europa abbiamo un team ufficiale pronto a servire tre tipi di factory – minimo – e attualmente ce n’è uno nella struttura che è ancora un novellino. Attualmente non è sufficiente per lo sforzo che stiamo facendo. Non voglio una squadra senza una formazione adeguata perché vogliono lavorare sodo, vogliono sviluppare e realizzare moto migliori e piloti migliori “.
Beirer e KTM hanno un rapporto speciale con Herlings da quando l’hanno portato nel team Red Bull KTM a quindici anni nel 2010; quest’anno è la decima stagione della loro collaborazione e quattro titoli e 84 vittorie in GP sono state prese da quel momento. Il tedesco (Beirer) non esclude la possibilità che i fan americani si godano Herlings nel campionato di dodici round, ma rimane prudente. Molto dipende da come il pilota risponderà alle fasi finali della riabilitazione e se il piede sarà abbastanza forte da considerare anche un forte periodo di preparazione per il National. Se Herlings ha bisogno di più tempo, può rientrare in MXGP in estate e assistere in ogni situazione difficile che Cairoli possa condurre.
“C’è ancora un po ‘troppa speculazione e mi piacerebbe prendere questa decisione quando Jeffrey avrà una data per guidare”, ha concluso Beirer. “Dovrebbe guidare per più di una settimana, così possiamo vedere dove si trova e possiamo fare un piano. Non aspettatevi questa decisione troppo in fretta. Prenderà del tempo.”

Herlings 2019 AMA decision due but Pit Beirer “not enthusiastic” about switch
MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings should learn in the coming weeks if he will change Red Bull KTM camps and attempt the 2019 AMA Pro National motocross series in the USA. There has been continual speculation that the 24 year old could make the switch since his broke his right foot in Spain at the end of January. Herlings had his first serious check-up on Monday to assess the surgery to repair multiple fractures and the doctors were allegedly pleased with the progress of his recovery as the Dutchman had three pins removed.
Herlings is still not expected to be riding his 450 SX-F for another month which means he’ll miss Grands Prix in Britain, Holland and Italy and is almost certainly out of the fight for the 2019 title.
Talk of Marvin Musquin, Red Bull KTM’s current AMA Supercross rider, allegedly requiring an operation on his knee means that a slot could be open next to leader of the 2019 SX series, Cooper Webb, for the thirteen-round American motocross championship starting at Hangtown on May 18th, which could still be a push for Herlings to reach full race readiness.
Herlings has publicly stated his willingness to attempt the AMA competition after briefly training with KTM Group trainer Aldon Baker and winning the final round of the Nationals at Ironman, Indiana in the summer of 2017. If he did make the transfer he would become the first defending premier class world champion to take to the line on American soil as a full-time member of the championship. It is even conceivable that Herlings could be the first rider ever to hold both FIM and AMA crowns at the same time if he wins the contest in the USA (MXGP finishes in Hong Kong on September 22nd while the Nationals end on the final weekend in August).
KTM have been non-committal on the possibility of losing their MXGP star, especially as this would leave Tony Cairoli – currently holding the red plate – as their sole representative in grand prix and a presence that has shrunk from three riders last year to just one in 2019.
“He’s under contract to race in Europe and I’m not enthusiastic about this American story because we have a fantastic team with fantastic riders in the USA,” said Motorsport Director Pit Beirer recently at the MotoGP race in Qatar. “Without Jeffrey we don’t have a full line-up in MXGP and we’d already made all these cosmetic changes with Pauls Jonass moving to IceOne. It is always good to have a back-up and a minimum of two top riders so I’m not super-happy about him going to America.”
“It is not easy,” he added on the prospect of shifting the rider roster. “What would be easier is to add a guy [who is] already in America. In Europe we have a factory team that is ready to service three factory guys – minimum – and there is currently one in the structure that is still a rookie. Currently it is not enough for the effort we are making. I don’t want the team without a proper line-up because they want to work hard, they want to develop and make better bikes and better riders.”
Beirer and KTM have a special relationship with Herlings since bringing him into the Red Bull KTM outfit as a fifteen year old in 2010; this year is the tenth season of their collaboration and four titles and 84 GP wins have been taken in that time. The German is not ruling out the chance of American fans enjoying Herlings in the twelve round campaign but is remaining cautious. Much hinges on how the rider will respond to the final phases of rehab and whether the foot will be strong enough to even consider a strong period of preparation for the Nationals. If Herlings needs more time then he can re-enter MXGP in the summer and assist any title plight that Cairoli could be waging. “It is still a little bit too much speculation and I’d like to take this decision when Jeffrey has a date set to ride,” Beirer concluded. “He should be riding for more than a week so we can see where he is and we can make a plan. Don’t expect this decision quickly. It will take time.”
