So it is logical that Herlings has started to look around and possibly found a way to be able to compete for a world title in 2019. Not in the MXGP, but in the AMA Nationals.

That is the American counterpart of the MXGP. This is interesting both from a sportive and a commercial point of view. And not unimportant: the season only starts on 18 May.

“That is indeed an option, I am certainly open to it, but only if I am completely fit again, can prepare well and be able to ride for the title.”

In that list of conditions is still missing a crucial point: his employer KTM has to agree. That approval is not self-evident, because that team has already registered two title candidates in the AMA Nationals, who probably are not waiting for competition from their own stable.

“Next week we have talks with the team in Austria, which is one of the scenarios that will be discussed, but it is only later that we cut the knot”, says Herlings.
