Herlings parla del “perfetto” KTM 450
Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM, un 23enne con un record sul podio del 100% e sei vittorie negli otto round del 2018 MXGP, afferma che la sua 450 SX-F Factory è “perfetta” in quanto l’olandese guida il campionato del mondo sul compagno di squadra Tony Cairoli di quasi un Gran Premio completo mentre la serie arriva al punto intermedio nel Regno Unito questo fine settimana.
Herlings è stato prolifico con i suoi risultati in questa stagione, tornando ai suoi giorni inebrianti nella classe MX2 dove ha vinto tre titoli in sette stagioni e avrebbe dovuto vincerne altri due. La sua competitività nella classe regina è stata supportata dalla SX-F 2019 della casa austriaca (ufficialmente lanciata la scorsa settimana in Italia CLICCA QUI) e modifiche come l”assistenza’ elettronica del team ufficiale che ha migliorato significativamente, forse, la sua unica debolezza.
“La moto è perfetta in questo momento e non vorrei cambiare nulla perché sono felice e fiducioso”, ha detto Herlings in esclusiva dopo aver vinto la sua quarta manche e il secondo Gran Premio di fila dello scorso fine settimana in Germania. “Finché riesco a ottenere la partenza e in media essere tra i primi tre, allora è tutto molto più facile. Da quando abbiamo fatto il cambio con le partenze in Italia [GP del Trentino e quarto round], la maggior parte di loro sono state davvero buone. “
Quando è stato chiesto perché Herlings è stato in grado di mostrare una tale superiorità finora nel 2018 l’ #84 è stato insolitamente perso per una risposta. “Onestamente, non lo so”, dice. “Sto solo facendo ciò che amo fare … e cerco di farlo il più velocemente possibile! Sta andando piuttosto bene nelle ultime gare. “
L’aumento della maturità in termini di risultati possibili sta avendo anche un beneficio, ma la velocità di Herlings è stata finora assoluta con 12 vittorie in manche di 16. “Penso di essere bravo su tutte le piste, fango, sabbia, duro o qualcosa in via di mezzo come la Lettonia, “Lui opina. “Cerco solo il miglior risultato possibile in ogni gara. Quando il cancello scende dopo alcuni giri, decido “OK, vado per questa [posizione] o quella …”. Dipende da come è la situazione. “
Herlings non sta diventando troppo sicuro di sé (“molte cose possono ancora accadere”) e rifiuta di riconoscere che la sua forma si sta avvicinando al dominio dei suoi giorni in MX2. “Non direi che è come allora….. la competizione è molto più alta ora”, afferma.
Con un vantaggio di 48 punti rispetto alla concorrenza, i rivali di Herlings stanno cercando un modo per fermare l’uomo e la macchina prima che la serie inizi a scivolare via con un ottavo titolo MXGP dal 2010 a KTM.

Herlings talks “perfect” KTM 450
Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings, a 23 year old with a 100% podium record and six victories from the eight rounds of 2018 MXGP, claims that his factory 450 SX-F is “perfect” as the Dutchman leads world champion and teammate Tony Cairoli by almost a full Grand Prix as the series arrives to the midway point in the UK this weekend.
Herlings has been prolific with his results this season, harking back to his heady days in the MX2 class where he aced three titles in seven seasons and should have won two more. His competitiveness in the premier class has been assisted by the Austrian firm’s 2019 SX-F (officially launched last week in Italy) and modifications such as the factory team’s electronic start ‘assist’ that has significantly improved perhaps his only weakness.
“The bike is perfect right now and I would not want to change a thing because I am happy and confident,” Herlings said exclusively after winning his fourth moto and second grand prix in a row last weekend in Germany. “As long as I can get the start and – on average – be around the top three then that is making things way-easier for me. Since we made the change with the starts in Italy [GP of Trentino and round four] then most of them have been really good.”
When asked why Herlings has been able to show such superiority so far in 2018 #84 was unusually lost for a reply. “Honestly, I don’t know,” he says. “I am just doing what I love to do…and I try to do it as fast as possible! It’s been going pretty good in the last races.”
Increased maturity when it comes to possible results is also having a bearing but Herlings speed has been absolute so far with 12 moto wins from 16. “I think I am good on all tracks, mud, sand, hard or something in between like Latvia,” he opines. “I just try for the best possible result each race. When the gate drops after a few laps I decide ‘OK, I’m going for this [position] or that…’. It depends how the situation is.”
Herlings is not getting over-confident (“many things can still happen”) and refuses to acknowledge that his form is nearing the dominant pomp of his MX2 days. “I would not say that…the competition is so much higher now,” he offers.
With a 48 points advantage over the competition, Herlings’ rivals are looking for a way to stop man and machine before the series starts to slip away and a eighth MXGP title since 2010 goes KTM’s way.
