Gajser: “Herlings è nella migliore forma che abbia mai visto”
Il campione del mondo MXGP 2016 Tim Gajser ha rivelato quanto sia difficile competere nella serie 2018 e contro lo slancio dell’attuale leader di campionato Jeffrey Herlings, che finora ha vinto sei degli otto round e detiene un vantaggio di quasi 50 punti sul campione in carica un Tony Cairoli prima della metà della stagione.
Alla domanda su come il ventunenne potesse considerare di provare a battere Herlings – e rivale a lungo termine – e che non è finito più in basso del terzo posto nelle sedici manche fino ad oggi, Gajser è stato costretto a cercare una soluzione.
“È difficile da dire”, dice. “Penso che Jeffrey sia ora nella migliore forma che abbia mai visto, e abbiamo corso insieme attraverso le nostre carriere sin da quando eravamo nei 65. È davvero veloce in questo momento e sicuramente tutte le manche vinte, le vittorie e i GP ti danno più fiducia “.
Il #243 dice che lo slancio che Herlings ha generato dai risultati e anche la sicurezza che la sua Factory Red Bull KTM lo porta fuori dal cancello ha creato un pacchetto potente. “Sa che quando arriverà alle gare, vincerà, e questo è il lato mentale”, afferma Gasjer. “È decisamente forte nella testa.”
Lo sloveno si trova in una posizione vagamente simile ad Herlings nel 2017 quando l’olandese, all’epoca un esordiente sulla 450, stava cercando di recuperare terreno e forma dopo una rottura della mano destra sostenuta in pre-campionato e una sottovalutazione delle richieste della classe MXGP . Gasjer si sta riprendendo dal suo stesso contrattempo e una mascella rotta in un incidente spaventoso a Mantova in Italia che gli ha fatto perdere il GP d’apertura in Argentina.
“L’anno scorso sapevamo che Jeffrey era in cattive condizioni ma ha ricostruito tutto e ottenuto i risultati; e sto cercando di farlo in quel modo “, dice Gajser che è arrivato secondo assoluto la scorsa settimana in Germania per il suo secondo podio dell’anno. “Stava andando in giro in quindicesima posizione e tornò gara dopo gara e stava vincendo di nuovo. Nel nostro sport è difficile perché tutti lavorano duramente, si allenano duramente e tutti vogliono vincere. Ogni anno la competizione è più dura e le persone cercano di trovare piccoli vantaggi e sono difficili da trovare. Voglio essere di nuovo lì e farò del mio meglio. “

Gajser: “Herlings is in the best shape I have ever seen”
2016 MXGP World Champion Tim Gajser revealed just how hard it is to compete in the 2018 series and against the momentum of current standings leader Jeffrey Herlings, who has claimed six of the eight rounds so far and holds a lead of almost 50 points over reigning number one Tony Cairoli before the halfway point of the campaign.
When asked how the 21 year old could consider trying to beat a rider – and long-term rival – who has not finished lower than third in the sixteen motos to-date, Gajser was stumped for a solution.
“It is tough to say,” he says. “I think Jeffrey is now in the best shape I have ever seen, and we have been racing through our careers together since we were on 65s. He is really fast right now and for sure all the moto wins, race wins and GPs give you more confidence.”
#243 says the momentum Herlings has generated from results and also assurances that his factory Red Bull KTM will get him out of the gate has created a potent package. “He knows when he comes to the races then he will win, and that’s the mental side,” Gasjer claims. “He is definitely strong in the head.”
The Slovenian is in a vaguely similar position to Herlings in 2017 when the Dutchman, then a rookie on the 450, was trying to recover ground and form after a broken right hand sustained in pre-season and an underestimation of the demands of the MXGP class. Gasjer is trawling back from his own mishap and a broken jaw picked up in a scary accident at Mantova on Italy that caused him to miss the opening GP of the term in Argentina.
“Last year we knew Jeffrey was in a bad condition but he rebuilt everything and got the results back; and I’m looking to do it like that,” says Gajser who finished second overall last week in Germany for his second podium finish of the year. “He was riding around in fifteenth and he came back race by race and was winning again. In our sport it is tough because everyone is working hard, training hard and they all want to win. Every year the competition is tougher and people are trying to find small advantages, and they are difficult to find. I want to be there again and I’ll do my best.”
