MONACO (Principato di Monaco) giugno 2024 – I Campionati mondiali FIM Motocross 2024 si dirigono direttamente dalla Germania all’MXGP della Lettonia mentre il Motocenter Zelta Zirgs vicino alla città di Kegums accoglie il nono round della serie sul suo terreno sabbioso!
Kegums ha ospitato 18 round MXGP da quando ha corso per la prima volta un Gran Premio MX3 nel 2005, vinto dal belga Sven Breugelmans. È presente nel calendario MXGP ogni anno dal 2009, quando Antonio Cairoli e Rui Goncalves hanno ottenuto le vittorie in MX1 e MX2, a parte il 2014, quando ha visto un combattutissimo Motocross delle Nazioni, vinto dal Team France all’inizio di una serie di 5 vittorie consecutive.
Kegums è stato un felice terreno di caccia per Jeffrey Herlings, con la leggenda della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing che ha ottenuto il record di 7 vittorie nei Gran Premi su terreni morbidi, inclusa la sua più recente, poco più di un anno fa, quando ha registrato i suoi unici 60 Gran Premi perfetti. – punti nel fine settimana fino ad oggi, vincendo la gara di qualificazione RAM di sabato e entrambe le gare di domenica.
Il vincitore della MX2 dell’anno scorso è stato il leader della classifica di quest’anno, Kay de Wolf sulla Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing . Entrambi gli olandesi vittoriosi si sarebbero purtroppo infortunati subito dopo, rendendoli incapaci di lottare per i titoli mondiali del 2023.
Il campionato EMX250 raggiunge il suo giro di boa come sesto round di undici, e Mathis Valin detiene la tabella rossa sulla sua Kawasaki Bud Racing dopo due vittorie consecutive. Cas Valk di Gabriel SS24 KTM e la stella di Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors Valerio Lata sono a soli quattro punti di distanza al secondo e terzo posto, ma l’olandese è a 26 punti da Valin. La metà dei fratelli adolescenti di motocross preferiti della Lettonia, Karlis Reisulis, è 8° in classifica per VRT Yamaha Racing e, dopo aver rappresentato la Lettonia nel Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations dello scorso anno, avrà sicuramente il pubblico dietro di sé!
Ritorna anche la serie EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing , con l’ungherese Noel Zanocz in testa per il team Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 , mentre la stella del Racestore KTM Factory Rookies Gyan Doensen è secondo con 17 punti! Il compagno di squadra italiano di Zanocz, Simone Mancini, ha vinto gli ultimi due round risalendo al terzo posto, a soli 7 punti dall’olandese. Il pilota locale Markuss Ozolins è 9° in classifica ma ha raggiunto i primi cinque in poche gare sulla sua GASGAS e godrà di molto supporto da parte del suo pubblico di casa!

Il campione del mondo MXGP in carica, Jorge Prado del team Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing , pregherà affinché il tempo non riservi sorprese a Kegums, poiché è solo quando ha piovuto a dirotto che non è uscito vittorioso da una Gran Premio finora nel 2024! Anche se ha goduto della sua sesta vittoria GP della stagione al Liqui Moly MXGP della Germania, si trova ancora a soli due punti di vantaggio da Tim Gajser del Team HRC, che è stato il modello di costanza e ne ha approfittato quando Prado ha lottato sul bagnato.
Jeffrey Herlings è salito al terzo posto nella serie per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, a 66 punti dal leader e nel disperato bisogno di rompere il suo anno di siccità vincente se vuole lanciare una sfida per il titolo mondiale di quest’anno. Ha superato il favorito del Kawasaki Racing Team Romain Febvre per la stagione, dato che il francese si è ritirato da gara uno in Germania a causa del dolore causato dal pollice destro infortunato, ed è OUT per l’evento di questo fine settimana.
Il record di 7 vittorie di Herlings a Kegums consiste in tre vittorie in MX2: nel 2010 (la sua seconda vittoria in assoluto in un GP), 2013 e 2016, mentre ha vinto il titolo MXGP nel 2017, ’18, la terza gara lì nel 2020, e ovviamente la scorsa stagione. Detiene anche il record di 14 vittorie in gare. Gajser ha vinto la classifica generale a Kegums quattro volte – 2016, ’19, ’21 e ’22 – con 6 vittorie in gare, ma Prado ha portato via il trofeo del vincitore solo una volta, in passato. nella sua campagna dominante nella MX2 del 2019. La sua unica vittoria su 450 è stata nel 2021. Febvre è salito sul podio cinque volte ma non ha mai espresso il verdetto generale in Lettonia, nonostante abbia vinto gare nel 2015 e nel 2016.
Un altro pilota attivo con bei ricordi di Kegums è la stella del Fantic Factory Racing MXGP Glenn Coldenhoff. Due delle sue sei vittorie in GP in carriera sono state qui, una nel 2015 per la Suzuki e più recentemente la prima vittoria in assoluto in un GP per GASGAS nel primo dei tre eventi del 2020.
Pauls Jonass ha purtroppo riportato infortuni al braccio e alla spalla in un incidente alla prima curva a Teutschenthal lo scorso fine settimana, che lo hanno lasciato incapace di competere nel Gran Premio di casa. Un duro colpo per l’eroe lettone che finora stava vivendo la sua migliore stagione nella sua classe, e noi tutti gli auguriamo una pronta guarigione.
Con Jonass fuori dai giochi il pubblico lettone avrà due wildcard per fare il tifo, nella forma di Tomass Sileika e Uldis Freibergs, figlio dell’ex pilota del Gran Premio Lauris .
Una vittoria per uno qualsiasi dei principali contendenti rappresenterebbe un enorme stimolo psicologico su una delle piste più difficili della stagione, e la battaglia sarà sicuramente più intensa che mai!
La classe MX2 ha visto finora lo slancio oscillare in tre direzioni diverse, con Kay de Wolf che ha ottenuto le prime tre vittorie GP per Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, Liam Everts le successive due per Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, e ora è l’altro Husky la stella a cavallo Lucas Coenen che ha una serie attiva di tre vittorie consecutive. Questo lo ha visto salire al secondo posto in classifica, a 59 punti dal suo compagno di squadra con la tabella rossa. Il pilota della Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, Simon Laengenfelder, è stato riportato al terzo posto, ma questo è ancora credibile per il tedesco dopo aver subito una frattura alla clavicola in Portogallo. Si trova a quattro punti da Lucas.
Everts e il suo compagno di squadra Andrea Adamo, campione in carica della classe, sono quarto e quinto, mentre Mikkel Haarup è risalito al sesto posto per Monster Energy Triumph Racing.
De Wolf è l’unico precedente vincitore di Kegums a schierarsi nella MX2 quest’anno, dopo il suo perfetto bottino di 60 punti nel 2023 che gli è valso la sua prima tabella rossa. Sarà ansioso di lasciare nuovamente il segno nella serie come vincitore del GP, qualcosa che non è riuscito a ripetere dal MXGP della Sardegna, due mesi fa. Nessun altro nella classe è mai salito sul podio su questo circuito prima, anche se Lucas Coenen ha conquistato un secondo posto in gara due la scorsa stagione.
La grande domanda ora è chi potrà fermare il treno espresso Husqvarna mentre si lancia in un altro luogo sabbioso, dove entrambi i loro corridori sono così forti! Potrebbe essere una battaglia tra compagni di squadra, ma non sorprenderti nel vedere qualcuno degli altri sette migliori sfidanti mettersi in gioco!

ALL SET FOR THE BATTLE BY THE BALTIC AT THE MXGP OF LATVIA
MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 5 June 2024 – The 2024 FIM Motocross World Championships head straight from Germany to the MXGP of Latvia as the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter near the town of Kegums welcomes the ninth round of the series to its sandy terrain!
Kegums has hosted 18 MXGP rounds since it first ran an MX3 Grand Prix back in 2005, won by the Belgian Sven Breugelmans. It has been on the MXGP calendar every year since 2009, when Antonio Cairoli and Rui Goncalves took the wins in MX1 & MX2, apart from 2014 when it saw a hard-fought Motocross of Nations, won by Team France at the start of a five-year winning streak.
Kegums has been a happy hunting ground for Jeffrey Herlings, with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend notching up a record 7 Grand Prix wins in the soft terrain, including his most recent one, just over a year ago when he registered his only perfect 60-point scoring weekend to date, winning Saturday’s RAM Qualifying Race as well as both races on Sunday.
Last year’s MX2 winner was this year’s points leader, Kay de Wolf on the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing machine. Both victorious Dutchmen would sadly get injured very soon after to leave them unable to challenge for the 2023 world titles.
The EMX250 Championship reaches its halfway point as the sixth round of eleven, and Mathis Valin holds the red plate on his Bud Racing Kawasaki after two straight overall wins. Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Cas Valk and Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors star Valerio Lata are just four points apart in second and third, but the Dutchman is 26 back from Valin. One half of Latvia’s favourite teenage Motocross brothers, Karlis Reisulis, is 8th in the points for VRT Yamaha Racing, and after representing Latvia in last year’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations he will get the crowd behind him for sure!
The EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing series also returns, with Hungarian Noel Zanocz leading for the Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 team, while Racestore KTM Factory Rookies star Gyan Doensen is 17 points back in second! Zanocz’s Italian teammate Simone Mancini has won the last two rounds to lift himself up to third, just 7 points back from the Dutchman. Local rider Markuss Ozolins is 9th in the points but has reached the top five in a few races on his GASGAS and will enjoy a lot of vocal support from his home crowd!
The reigning MXGP World Champion, Jorge Prado of the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team, will be praying that the weather doesn’t throw up any surprises at Kegums, as it is only when the rain has poured that he has not emerged victorious from a Grand Prix so far in 2024! Even though he enjoyed his sixth GP win of the season at the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, he still lies just two points ahead of Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, who has been the model of consistency and taken advantage when Prado has struggled in wet conditions.
Jeffrey Herlings has moved up into third in the series for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, sitting 66 points behind the leader and in dire need of breaking his one-year winning drought if he is to mount a challenge for this year’s world title. He passed the Kawasaki Racing Team front-runner Romain Febvre for the season, as the Frenchman pulled out of race one in Germany due to pain from his injured right thumb, and is questionable for this weekend’s event.
Herlings’ record of 7 victories at Kegums consists of three wins in MX2 – in 2010 (his second ever GP win), 2013, and 2016, while he took MXGP honours in 2017, ’18, the third race there in 2020, and of course last season. He also holds the race wins record of 14. Gajser has won the overall at Kegums four times – 2016, ’19, ’21, and ’22 – with 6 race wins, but Prado has only ever taken the winner’s trophy away once, back in his dominant 2019 MX2 campaign. His only 450 win there was back in 2021. Febvre has been on the podium five times but never quite taken the overall verdict in Latvia, despite taking race wins in 2015 & ‘16.
Another active rider with fond memories of Kegums is Fantic Factory Racing MXGP star Glenn Coldenhoff. Two of his six career GP wins have been here, one in 2015 for Suzuki and more recently the first ever GP win for GASGAS in the first of the three 2020 events.
Pauls Jonass sadly suffered arm and shoulder injuries in a first corner crash at Teutschenthal last weekend, which leave him unable to compete at his home Grand Prix. A sad blow for the Latvian hero who was enjoying his best season in the class so far, and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
With Jonass out of action the Latvian crowd will have two wildcards to cheer on, in the shape of Tomass Sileika and Uldis Freibergs, son of former Grand Prix rider Lauris.
A win for any of the leading contenders would be a massive psychological boost at one of the toughest tracks of the season, and the battle is sure to be as intense as ever!

The MX2 class has seen the momentum swing in three different directions so far, with Kay de Wolf taking the first three GP wins for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, Liam Everts the next two for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and now it is the other Husky-mounted star Lucas Coenen who has an active streak of three in a row. This has seen him climb to second in the standings, 59 points behind his red plate holding teammate. Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing man Simon Laengenfelder has been knocked back to third, but that is still credible for the German after he suffered a collarbone break in Portugal. He sits four points back from Lucas.
Everts and his teammate Andrea Adamo, the reigning Champion in the class, are fourth and fifth, while Mikkel Haarup has moved up to sixth for Monster Energy Triumph Racing.
De Wolf is the only previous winner at Kegums to line up in MX2 this year, after his perfect 60-point haul in 2023 which earned him his first red plate. He will be keen to put a stamp on the series again as a GP winner, something he has not been able to repeat since the MXGP of Sardegna, two months ago. No one else in the class has even stood on the podium at this circuit before, although Lucas Coenen took a second in race two last season.
The big question is now who can stop the Husqvarna express train as they roll into another sandy venue which is where both of their riders are so strong! It could be a battle of the teammates, but don’t be surprised to see any of the other top seven challengers to fire themselves into contention!
