HERLINGS TORNA NEI PREMI CON IL 3° POSTO ASSOLUTO MENTRE LA MXGP TAGLIA LA SABBIA IN SARDEGNA

La MXGP ha affrontato il suo primo autentico test sabbioso del 2024 mentre il Gran Premio della Sardegna ha immerso le classi MXGP e MX2 sul terreno accidentato e increspato di Riola Sardo per il terzo dei venti round del 2024. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ha brindato al podio della MXGP sulla soleggiata isola italiana mentre Jeffrey Herlings è arrivato terzo con la sua KTM 450 SX-F e Liam Everts è stato il migliore tra i finalisti nella MX2 con il 5° posto ottenuto sulla KTM 250 SX-F.

Il due volte campione del mondo MXGP Jeffrey Herlings fa la sua prima apparizione sul podio dal Gran Premio della Lettonia all’inizio di giugno 2023. Il 3° posto significa che l’olandese è attualmente 3° in classifica, a 49 punti dalla tabella rossa

Il campione del mondo MX2 Andrea Adamo viene squalificato dalla seconda manche e gli viene negato il secondo podio per Gran Premi consecutivi. L’italiano si classifica al 12° posto della giornata

Per il quarto anno consecutivo l’impegnativa sabbia di Riola Sardo è stata teatro di un Gran Premio MXGP impegnativo e tecnico. Il circuito è familiare alla maggior parte del campionato del mondo FIM in quanto luogo regolare di test invernali e sede abituale di una data nella serie “pre-campionato” degli Internazionali d’Italia. La Red Bull KTM Factory Racing si è recata in Sardegna dopo le gare in Argentina e Spagna e con alcuni membri della squadra che si sono mantenuti in assetto competitivo durante le competizioni nazionali lo scorso fine settimana.

Sulla scena internazionale Riola è stata una dura prova per uomini e macchine, con un clima primaverile caldo che aggiungeva difficoltà. Jeffrey Herlings è stato il miglior interprete del roster di quattro piloti sabato per la RAM Qualification Heat. L’olandese è arrivato terzo nella MXGP nonostante il disagio causato da una caduta in prova. Liam Everts è riuscito a raggiungere il sesto posto nella MX2, mentre Andrea Adamo ha recuperato da una caduta alla prima curva fino al 12° mentre Sacha Coenen è arrivato 10°.

Herlings è stato l’obiettivo principale della MXGP e, essendo il pilota più prolifico nella storia di questo sport, continua il suo percorso verso la massima velocità, fiducia e potenziale. Nonostante avesse bisogno di alcuni antidolorifici, Jeffrey ha attaccato la sabbia per confermare il 3° posto nella prima gara e la sua seconda top-3 della stagione finora. Nella seconda uscita è partito meglio e stava inseguendo il leader Jorge Prado quando una piccola scivolata lo ha fatto finire al 3° posto. Ha confermato il 3-3 di giornata: il suo primo trofeo della MXGP 2024 dopo aver segnato l’8° e il 4° posto nei round precedenti.

La decisa ascesa di Adamo al 3° posto nella seconda gara della MX2 avrebbe dovuto dargli un punteggio di 4-3 per la giornata e assicurargli un secondo podio consecutivo. L’italiano è stato però squalificato per non essersi fermato nella pitlane quando è entrato brevemente durante i 30 minuti e 2 giri ed è quindi sceso al 12° posto assoluto.

La MXGP conserva un sapore italiano e si dirige verso la terraferma per il Gran Premio del Trentino il prossimo fine settimana. La serie cambierà sabbia, mare e sole per l’epico paesaggio montano delle Dolomiti e il duro terreno di Arco. L’evento del 2023 è stato degno di nota in quanto teatro della prima vittoria in un GP di Andrea Adamo e del primo podio in carriera di Liam Everts.

Jeffrey Herlings, 3° e 3° per il 3° assoluto nella MXGP: “Ho avuto uno enorme caduta sabato mattina e mi è mancato il fiato, il che non ha aiutato. Ho avuto un problema alle costole per tutto il fine settimana e la pista era davvero accidentata. Nessuna scusa… ma significava che il GP era una lotta. Nella seconda manche è stata la prima volta in questa stagione che ho avuto il ritmo per tenere Jorge… fino all’incidente! Nel complesso, questo è stato un passo avanti. Non sono ancora veloce come gli altri ragazzi, ma sono molto più vicino di quanto lo fossi in Argentina e ancora più vicino di quanto lo fossi in Spagna. Continuerò a crescere. È una lunga stagione e molte altre manche da percorrere. Sono felice di essere tornato sul podio per ora”.

Andrea Adamo, 4° e DQ per 12° assoluto nella MX2: “Un fine settimana abbastanza buono per me. Sabato ho faticato a trovare il giusto assetto, ma domenica abbiamo apportato alcune modifiche e ho fatto due manche buone e solide per arrivare 4-3, che normalmente sarebbe stato 3° assoluto! Sfortunatamente, verso la fine della seconda manche sono andato largo e sono uscito di pista e l’unico modo per rientrare era passare attraverso la pitlane, ma le regole dicono che devi fermarti se la attraversi. Ho pensato che fosse un po’ troppo squalificarmi. Zero punti nella seconda manche, non come avrei voluto concludere la giornata anche se era andata abbastanza bene. Sono super felice di tornare ad Arco tra pochi giorni”.

HERLINGS BACK IN THE PRIZES WITH 3RD OVERALL AS MXGP CUTS THE SAND IN SARDEGNA

MXGP faced its first authentic sandy test of 2024 as the Grand Prix of Sardegna plunged the MXGP and MX2 classes into the rough and rippled Riola Sardo terrain for round three of twenty in 2024. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing toasted an MXGP podium on the sunny Italian island as Jeffrey Herlings rode to 3rd with his KTM 450 SX-F and Liam Everts was the pick of the finishers in MX2 with 5th place scored on the KTM 250 SX-F.

  • Two-time MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings makes his first rostrum appearance since the Grand Prix of Latvia in early June 2023. 3rd place means the Dutchman is currently 3rd in the standings, 49 points from the red plate
  • Liam Everts collects 5th overall with a strong second moto ride to 4th place while Sacha Coenen takes 9th and both MX2 holeshots with the KTM 250 SX-F
  • MX2 World Champion Andrea Adamo is disqualified from the second moto and denied a second podium finish for consecutive Grands Prix. The Italian ranks 12th on the day
  • MXGP barely eases off the throttle and stays in Italian territory this week. Round four will venture onto the Pietramurata hardpack in Arco di Trento for the Grand Prix of Trentino in a few days’ time
For the fourth year in a row the challenging Riola Sardo sand was the scene for a demanding and technical MXGP Grand Prix. The circuit is familiar to most of the FIM World Championship field as a regular winter testing location as well as a habitual host of a date in the Internazionali d’Italia ‘pre-season’ series. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing travelled to Sardinia after races in Argentina and Spain and with some of the squad keeping in competitive trim during domestic competition last weekend.
 
On the international stage Riola was a stern test of man and machine with a hot spring climate adding to the difficulty. Jeffrey Herlings was the best performer from the four-rider roster on Saturday for the RAM Qualification Heat. The Dutchman was 3rd in MXGP despite battling some discomfort from a practice fall. Liam Everts managed a 6th in MX2 while Andrea Adamo recovered from a first corner crash to 12th while Sacha Coenen was 10th.
 
Herlings was the main focus for the MXGP motos and as the most prolific racer in the history of the sport continues his path back to full speed, confidence and potential. Although he needed some painkillers, Jeffrey attacked the sand to confirm 3rd place in the first race and his second top-three classification of the season so far. In the second outing he started better and was stalking the rear wheel of leader Jorge Prado when a small slip dropped him to 3rd. He confirmed 3-3 for the day: his first silverware of 2024 MXGP after marking 8th and 4th in the previous rounds.
 
Adamo’s determined rise to 3rd place in the second MX2 race should have given him a scorecard of 4-3 for the day and ensured a second podium finish in a row. The Italian was disqualified however for failing to stop in the pitlane when he briefly entered during the 30 minutes and 2 lap distance and therefore dropped to 12th overall.
 
Everts, still making gains after his pre-season thumb injury, left Sardinia with a well-earned top five with 8th and 4th across the sand. His 5th position was four spots better than Coenen who again showed his superb starting skills with two holeshots (now up to 5 in total for the season) but mistakes nudged him down to 13-6. All three factory KTM 250 SX-Fs were roaming in the leading places out of the gate in the second moto.

 
MXGP retains an Italian flavor but heads to the mainland for the Grand Prix of Trentino next weekend. The series will change sand, sea and sun for the epic Dolomite mountain landscape and punishing Arco hardpack. The 2023 event was notable as the scene of Andrea Adamo’s maiden GP victory and Liam Everts first career podium result.
 
Jeffrey Herlings, 3rd and 3rd for 3rd overall in MXGP: “I had a massive one on Saturday morning and had the wind knocked out of me, which didn’t help. I had an issue with my ribs all weekend then and the track was so bumpy. No excuses…but it meant the GP was a struggle. The second moto was the first time this season I had the pace to go with Jorge…until the crash! Overall, this was a step forward. I’m not as fast as the other guys yet but I’m much closer than I was in Argentina and closer again than I was in Spain. I’ll keep growing. It’s a long season and a lot more motos to go. I’m happy to be back on the podium for now.”

 
Liam Everts, 8th and 4th for 5th overall in MX2: “A difficult weekend in general but the second moto was a positive. I found it hard to pass in the Qualification Heat and suffered with an early crash in the first race. I had a better start in the second and gave it all I had to pass up to the top four and just missed out. Overall P5 and it was tricky. I hope to be better in Trentino.”
 
Sacha Coenen, 13th and 6th for 9th overall in MX2: “My starts were really good and it was good to lead for a few laps but the crashes meant I had to always come back. It got to the point where I just wanted to finish, and we’re not so happy because the top three was in reach. I didn’t get the rhythm at the start of the second moto but I kept going and 6th was quite solid. More learning, and we know that the speed is there. We’ll see what we can do in Arco.”
 
Andrea Adamo, 4th and DQ for 12th overall in MX2: “A pretty good weekend for me. I struggled on Saturday to find the right set-up but on Sunday we made some adjustments, and I had two good and solid motos to go 4-3, which would have been normally 3rd overall! Unfortunately, near the end of the second moto I went wide and off the track and the only way to rejoin was to go through the pitlane but the rules say that you have to stop if you go through it. I thought it was a bit too much to disqualify me. Zero points from the second moto, and not how I wanted to end the day even if it had been going quite well. I’m super-happy to go back to Arco now in just a few days.”
