Romain Febvre è secondo in Portogallo
Romain Febvre e il Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP sono arrivati secondi nel round portoghese del FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship ad Agueda, arrivando terzi nella serie.
Il francese ha mostrato la sua esperienza durante le prime due curve ampie della prima manche per emergere secondo e si è subito stabilizzato su un buon ritmo mentre seguiva il leader a distanza. Dopo aver lasciato cadere gli inseguitori dalla sua ruota posteriore dopo tre giri, il leader della Kawasaki ha avvicinato in modo significativo il pilota davanti nei tre giri successivi, ma non è riuscito ad avvicinarsi abbastanza da presentare l’opportunità per un sorpasso e alla fine si è stabilizzato su un buon ritmo. Un’altra carica durante le fasi finali lo ha visto ritirare il leader della gara per arrivare a meno di due secondi dalla vittoria alla bandiera a scacchi. La momentanea perdita di slancio durante la seconda curva di gara due quando un pilota direttamente davanti a lui ha perso trazione ha visto il francese quinto la prima volta oltre i cronometristi, ma è subito balzato sotto il leader della serie a metà del primo giro per il quarto posto. Cercando di inseguire i primi, ha affrontato un frustrante quarto d’ora mentre il pilota terzo ha reso difficile il sorpasso. Alla fine ha messo in fila una mossa scintillante tra le wave, ma a quel punto i due leader erano troppo avanti per lui per prenderli. Tuttavia, il terzo in manche ha guadagnato il secondo posto assoluto nella giornata e, cosa più significativa, lo ha visto ritirare punti sul leader della serie mentre si sposta terzo nella corsa a punti.
Romain Febvre: “Mi sono sentito bene per tutto il fine settimana. Ieri ho dovuto spingere abbastanza forte, ma sono riuscito a fare il quinto posto dal diciassettesimo in qualifica, quindi sapevo che dovevo solo fare delle partenze decenti oggi. Molti di noi avevano una velocità simile e sapevo che dovevo passare velocemente quindi sono stato contento del secondo posto nella prima gara. La seconda manche è stata più dura. Ho avuto una bella lotta pulita con Seewer ma poi i due ragazzi davanti se ne sono andati. È bello essere di nuovo sul podio e riprendere punti in il campionato; non vedo l’ora di fare di più il prossimo fine settimana in Spagna “.
Il compagno di squadra KRT Mitch Evans si è ritrovato sedicesimo al termine del primo giro di gara uno dopo che le qualifiche gli avevano riservato un cancello esterno e, intento a non farsi saltare in aria nella sua prima gara reduce da un infortunio, ha mantenuto quella posizione per venti minuti con costanza tempi sul giro prima di indietreggiare leggermente negli ultimi giri per finire diciottesimo. Un altro inizio difficile in gara due ha visto l’australiano mancare di poco la zona punti al ventunesimo posto.
Mitch Evans: “L’ultima volta che ho corso è stato in ottobre e sapevo che la prima gara di ritorno sarebbe stata dura. Sono un pilota e mi aspetto di più da me stesso, quindi ovviamente sono un po’ deluso, ma almeno sono tornato alle gare e ci sono stati molti aspetti positivi da portare via dal fine settimana, la mia velocità sul giro è buona ed è più facile mettere in forma un pilota veloce che rendere più veloce un pilota in forma. Devo solo abituarmi all’intensità e di nuovo in gara e ci arriveremo presto. Non c’è alcuna pressione da parte del team e ne sono grato”.

Romain Febvre takes second in Portugal
Romain Febvre and Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP finished runners-up in the Portuguese round of the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship at Agueda to go third in the series.
The Frenchman displayed his experience through the wide sweeping first two turns of the opening moto to emerge second and immediately settled into a good rhythm as he tracked the leader at arm’s length. Having dropped the chasers off his rear wheel after three laps the Kawasaki leader closed significantly on the rider ahead through the next three laps but could not quite get close enough to present the opportunity for a pass and he eventually settled back into a good rhythm. Another charge during the closing stages saw him pull back the race-long leader to come up less than two seconds short of victory at the chequered flag. Momentarily losing momentum through the second turn of race two as a rider directly ahead of him lost traction saw the Frenchman fifth the first time past the timekeepers but he immediately pounced to sweep under the series leader halfway round the first lap for fourth. Looking to chase down the leaders he faced a frustrating quarter-of-an-hour as the rider in third made it awkward to pass. He eventually lined up a scintillating move through the waves but by then the two leaders were too far ahead for him to run them down. However, third in moto earnt second overall on the day and, more significantly, saw him pull back points on the series leader as he moves third in the points chase.
Romain Febvre: “I was feeling good all weekend. I had to push quite hard yesterday but I managed fifth from seventeenth in Qualifying so I knew I just needed to take decent starts today. Many of us had similar speed and I knew I had to pass quickly so I was happy with second in the first race. The second moto was tougher. I had a good clean fight with Seewer but then the two guys in front were gone. It’s good to be back on the podium and take points back in the championship; I look forward to pulling back more next weekend in Spain.”
KRT teammate Mitch Evans found himself sixteenth at the completion of the first lap of race one after Qualifying had dealt him an outside gate and, intent not to blow himself up in his first race back from injury, he maintained that position for twenty minutes with consistent lap times before backing off slightly in the final laps to finish eighteenth. Another difficult start in race two saw the Australian narrowly miss the points in twenty-first.
Mitch Evans: “The last time I raced was in October and I knew the first race back would be tough. I’m a racer and expect more from myself so of course I’m a little disappointed but at least I’m back at the races and there were a lot of positives to take away from the weekend; my one-lap speed is good and it’s easier to make a fast rider fit than to make a fit rider faster. I just need to get used to the intensity and race-craft again and we’ll get there soon. There’s no pressure from the team and I’m grateful for that.”
