Romain Febvre terzo nella corsa a punti MXGP
Romain Febvre del Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP ha iniziato la campagna del FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship 2023 come terzo miglior marcatore di punti dopo l’apertura della serie a Villa La Angostura in Argentina.

Il francese ha fatto una buona partenza in gara uno per completare la prima curva tra i primi tre e si è concentrato sul mantenimento di questo status durante i primi giri frenetici mentre i rivali più esuberanti gli hanno sbattuto i manubri intorno. A metà manche si era allontanato dagli inseguitori e si era stabilizzato su un buon ritmo per chiudere drasticamente il duo davanti a lui; la pressione è stata premiata a dieci minuti dalla fine della manche quando il pilota al secondo posto è stato costretto a commettere un errore per consegnare al leader Kawasaki un secondo sicuro, a meno di cinque secondi dal leader. Inserito alla prima curva in gara due, Romain ha fatto ottimi primi giri per passare presto al settimo posto e ha continuato a spingere fino alla fine, un drammatico sorpasso esterno a tre giri dalla fine ha conquistato il quinto posto. In una fase decisiva ha mancato di poco il podio del giorno della gara, ma il suo ottimo giro in qualifica, dove quest’anno vengono assegnati punti aggiuntivi per la serie, gli ha assicurato di raggiungere i punti, a soli sei punti dal leader della serie.
Romain Febvre: “Ovviamente è un po’ frustrante mancare il podio di due punti, ma onestamente non mi aspettavo un risultato così buono così presto dopo tre settimane senza moto dopo l’operazione al braccio. La mia prima partenza è stata buona e sono rimasto calmo perché la pista era scivolosa a causa della pioggia; un secondo senza rischi è stato un buon inizio di stagione. Nella seconda manche la mia partenza non è stata così buona e nei primi giri si può perdere molto tempo sorpassando i piloti perché nessuno vuole cedere all’inizio della gara; quinto è un discreto risultato, ma sicuramente con una partenza migliore il podio sarebbe stato possibile. Comunque sono contento di dimostrare di avere la velocità e di correre entrambe le manche con un buon ritmo… e con la nuova regola dei punti sono terzo in campionato. Ora voliamo a casa; abbiamo in programma altri test prima della Sardegna”.
Il compagno di squadra Mitch Evans e la direzione del KRT hanno deciso dopo il riscaldamento mattutino che era meglio per l’australiano rinunciare alle corse piuttosto che rischiare di ritardare ulteriormente il suo completo recupero da un infortunio al pollice di inizio stagione.
Antti Pyrhönen (team manager KRT): “Romain ha fatto un ottimo lavoro e ha consegnato esattamente l’inizio della serie che speravamo con una guida costante e risultati per tornare in Europa terzo in classifica. Sapevamo che sarebbe stato difficile per Mitch anche prima che venissimo qui, ma ci abbiamo provato; la sua prestazione nell’allenamento cronometrato è stata ragionevole con il dodicesimo miglior tempo, ma il dolore causato dall’infortunio al pollice era troppo per l’intensità della corsa su una pista accidentata, quindi abbiamo deciso di non farlo rischiare di più questo fine settimana”.
La competitività della gamma Kawasaki standard è stata enfatizzata in Argentina, poiché Joaquin Poli, montato sulla KX450, è stato il principale jolly sudamericano in entrambe le manche e suo fratello Agustin si è unito a lui nella zona punti in gara due.

Romain Febvre of Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP started the 2023 FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship campaign as third-highest points-scorer after the series opener at Villa La Angostura in Argentina.

The Frenchman made a strong start in race one to round the opening turn in the top three and concentrated on maintaining this status through the hectic early laps as over-exuberant rivals banged bars around him. By mid-moto he had broken clear of the chasers and settled into a good rhythm to dramatically close down the duo ahead of him; the pressure was rewarded ten minutes from the end of the moto as the rider in second place was forced into a mistake to hand the Kawasaki leader a secure second, less than five seconds down on the leader. Boxed-in at the first turn in race two Romain rode strong opening laps to soon advance to seventh and kept pushing to the end, a dramatic outside pass three laps from the end clinching fifth place. In a tight decider he narrowly missed the race-day podium, but his strong ride in Qualifying, where additional series points are awarded this year, ensured that he heads to round two third on points, just six shy of the series leader.
Romain Febvre: “Of course it’s a little frustrating to miss the podium on the day by two points, but honestly I wasn’t expecting such a good result so soon after three weeks off the bike following my arm surgery. My first start was good and I stayed calm as the track was slippery with the rain; a no-risk second was a good start to the season. In the second race my start was not so good and in the first few laps you can lose a lot of time passing riders as nobody want to give way at the start of the race; fifth is a decent result, but for sure with a better start the podium would have been possible. Anyway I’m happy to show I have the speed and to race both motos with a good rhythm … and with the new points rule I’m third in the championship. Now we fly home; we have some more testing planned before Sardinia.”
Teammate Mitch Evans and KRT management decided after morning warm-up that it was better for the Australian to sit out racing rather than risk delaying further his complete recovery from an early-season thumb injury.
Antti Pyrhönen (KRT team manager): “Romain did an extremely good job and delivered exactly the start to the series which we were hoping for with consistent riding and results to fly back to Europe third in the points. We knew that it would be difficult for Mitch even before we came here but we gave it a try; his performance in timed training was reasonable with twelfth-fastest time but the pain from his thumb injury was just too much for the intensity of racing on a rough track so we decided not to risk it more this weekend.”
The competitiveness of the standard Kawasaki range was emphasized in Argentina as KX450-mounted Joaquin Poli was the leading South American wild card in both motos and his brother Agustin joined him in the points in race two.
