Maxime Renaux Masters Matterley Basin vince il Gran Premio MX2 di Gran Bretagna
Maxime Renaux di Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 ha celebrato un’enfatica vittoria del Grand Prix – la seconda della sua carriera e la prima del 2021 – al secondo round del Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross a Matterley Basin, a Winchester, in Inghilterra. Di conseguenza, il francese è salito al secondo posto nella classifica del Campionato del Mondo MX2. Nel frattempo, i compagni di squadra Thibault Benistant e Jago Geerts hanno concluso il Gran Premio di Gran Bretagna rispettivamente settimo e undicesimo.
Matterley Basin quest’anno è stato molto più solido e agile rispetto agli anni precedenti. La base compatta, ruvida e accidentata non ha sviluppato i solchi profondi che fa di solito, il che significava che la velocità del luogo era alta e i tempi sul giro erano vicini. Nelle prove di qualificazione, solo 1 secondo ha separato i primi sette piloti. Benistant ha segnato il secondo tempo più veloce con un 2:21.289, solo leggermente più veloce del suo compagno di squadra Renaux, che ha segnato un tempo di 2:21.410 per il terzo posto. Il giro più veloce di Geert è stato di 2:23.489. Si è qualificato 15°.
Un buon inizio può fare la differenza tra vincere e perdere nel motocross. Dopo aver apportato modifiche alle loro YZ250FM prima della gara, sia Renaux che Benistant sono schizzati fuori dal cancello e hanno preceduto il campo nella gara di apertura.
In quella che è stata una gara avvincente che è andata fino al limite, Renaux è rimasto in bilico e in controllo mentre ha condotto tutti i 14 giri per la sua prima vittoria in gara del 2021. Nel frattempo, Benistant è stato l’uomo più veloce in pista per gran parte della gara, ma è arrivato quinto dopo essere caduto in una battaglia per la seconda posizione al quinto giro.
Dopo una partenza a metà gruppo, Geerts, che sta soffrendo gli effetti di un infortunio al ginocchio, ha effettuato alcuni sorpassi impressionanti arrivando al settimo posto.
In contrasto con la gara di apertura, tutti e tre i piloti hanno dovuto lottare in avanti dal fondo del gruppo nell’ultima gara della giornata. Renaux ha effettuato una serie di sorpassi spettacolari senza perdere tempo, passando dal 15° al settimo posto nello spazio di un giro. Dopo una corsa formidabile, il ventenne francese alla fine è arrivato secondo.
Con un’estrema profondità di talento nella classe MX2, la maggior parte dei piloti è alla pari in velocità, rendendo estremamente difficile il sorpasso, in particolare su piste prive di difficoltà tecniche. Benistant si è sentito un po’ titubante nei primi giri, ma è riuscito a rimontare da fuori dai primi 15 per finire nono.
Aggiungendo la beffa al danno, Geerts è stato deluso di finire 22° dopo una brutta partenza e due cadute.
Renaux si è spostato a meno di 5 punti dal comando del campionato MX2, mentre Benistant è salito al nono posto nella serie. Anche Geerts ha guadagnato una posizione ed è ora 11°.
Il prossimo round del Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross si svolgerà il prossimo fine settimana a Maggiora, in Italia, il 4 luglio.

“Questo fine settimana è stato davvero buono. Sono così felice di riprendermi dopo la Russia perché mi sentivo come se avessi faticato lì. Ho fatto una buona partenza nella prima manche; Ho ottenuto il mio primo Fox Holeshot in assoluto e ho vinto la prima gara. Poi nella seconda gara ho avuto delle belle battaglie e sono davvero entusiasta della mia prestazione complessiva e non vedo l’ora che arrivi il resto della stagione”.

“Ho alcuni punti positivi da portare via da questo fine settimana. Sono un po’ deluso per la mia seconda manche. Ho una buona velocità, ma ho avuto una partenza difficile e poi in MX2 tutti danno il massimo nel primo giro e per me è difficile guidare ‘senza testa’ quindi perdo molte posizioni e poi devo provare a tornare in campo una volta che ho il mio ritmo.

“È stato un weekend davvero difficile per me, anche se la prima manche è andata bene. Ho avuto una brutta partenza, ma mi sentivo abbastanza bene, e sono riuscito a tornare settimo. Nella seconda gara, tutto quello che poteva andare storto, lo ha fatto. Ho avuto una brutta partenza, due cadute ed è stata solo un terribile fine del weekend. Non sono contento, ma cercherò di riorganizzarmi e migliorare il prossimo weekend”.

Maxime Renaux Masters Matterley Basin to Win MX2 Grand Prix of Great Britain
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2’s Maxime Renaux celebrated an emphatic Grand Prix victory – the second of his career and first of 2021 – at the second round of the FIM Motocross World Championship at Matterley Basin, in Winchester, England. As a result, the Frenchman has moved up to second in the MX2 World Championship standings. Meanwhile, teammates Thibault Benistant and Jago Geerts finished the Grand Prix of Great Britain seventh and 11th, respectively.
Matterley Basin this year was a lot firmer and slicker than in previous years. The hardpacked, rough and bumpy base didn’t develop the deep ruts it usually does, which meant the speed of the venue was high and lap-times were close. In Qualifying Practice, only 1-second separated the top-seven riders. Benistant set the second-fastest time with a 2:21.289, only fractionally quicker than his teammate Renaux, who posted a time of 2:21.410 for third. Geerts fastest lap was a 2:23.489. He qualified 15th.
A good start can be the difference between winning and losing in motocross. After making changes to their YZ250FMs ahead of racing today, both Renaux and Benistant rocketed out of the gate and fronted the field in the opening race.
In what was a gripping race that went right down to the wire, Renaux remained poised and in control as he led all 14-laps for his first race win of 2021. Meanwhile, Benistant was the fastest man on track for much of the race but finished fifth after crashing out of a battle for second position on lap-5.
After a mid-pack start, Geerts, who is suffering the effects of a knee injury, made some impressive passes on his way to seventh.
In contrast to the opening race, all three riders had to fight forward from the back of the pack in the final race of the day. Renaux made a series of spectacular passes with no time to waste as he stormed from 15th to seventh in the space of a lap. After a formidable ride, the 20-year-old Frenchman eventually finished second.
With an extreme depth of talent in the MX2 class, most riders are evenly matched in speed, making passing extremely difficult, particularly on tracks that lack technical difficulty. Benistant felt a little hesitant on the opening laps but managed to battle back from outside of the top-15 to finish ninth.
Adding insult to injury, Geerts was disappointed to finish 22nd after a poor start and two crashes.
Renaux has moved within 5-points of the MX2 Championship lead, while Benistant has shifted up into ninth in the series. Geerts also gained one position and is now 11th.
The next round of the FIM Motocross World Championship will take place next weekend in Maggiora, Italy, on July 4th.

“This weekend was really good. I am so happy to bounce back after Russia because I felt like I struggled there. I made a good start in the first moto; I got my first ever Fox Holeshot and won the first race. Then in the second race I had some good battles, and I am just really pumped with my overall performance and looking forward to the rest of the season.”

“I have a few good points to take away from this weekend. I am a little bit disappointed about my second moto. I have good speed, but I had a difficult start and then in MX2 everyone gives everything on the first lap and for me it is difficult to ride ‘without the mind’ so I lose a lot of places and then I need to try to come back through the field once I have my rhythm.”

“It was a really difficult weekend for me, although the first heat was okay. I had a bad start, but I felt pretty good, and I managed to get back to seventh. In the second race, everything that could go wrong, did. I had a bad start, two crashes, and it was just a terrible end to the weekend. I am not happy, but I will try to regroup and improve next weekend.”
