Cairoli gioca d’attesa con un problema al ginocchio sinistro
Tony Cairoli della Red Bull KTM è indeciso sulla giusta linea di trattamento per risolvere il problema al ginocchio sinistro che ha impedito la sua stagione 2020 e la sua candidatura vicina ma infruttuosa per un decimo titolo FIM da record. Il siciliano aveva bisogno di più volte lo svuotamento dell’articolazione dalla ripresa delle corse ad agosto e ha vinto il Gran Premio del Trentino a Pietramurata – il sedicesimo round dei diciotto in questo periodo – dopo aver subito un’iniezione di cortisone.
La stretta vicinanza delle gare e la piccola finestra di tempo di recupero tra i GP è stato un ostacolo per il 35enne, che ha anche sofferto per eguagliare l’intensità dei suoi avversari quando si tratta di time-attack nelle prove cronometrate per le posizioni al cancello . Sebbene le partenze di Cairoli siano state tipicamente forti con la KTM 450 SX-F, nelle sessioni di prove libere ha faticato a prendere il ritmo.
Il problema sembra essere correlato alla cartilagine e al contatto tra le ossa. “Ho visto molti medici, incluso il dottor Claes che mi ha operato un paio di volte, e dicono che non si può fare molto”, ha detto in esclusiva. “Il ginocchio non è in linea e sta spingendo da osso a osso. Non ci sono grossi problemi … ma è il liquido che mi dà dolore e meno mobilità. Quando ti pieghi troppo su questo tipo di piste hard-pack [come Pietramurata] allora hai molto dolore per un giro e mezzo e hai bisogno di raggruppare. Non è l’ideale. “
Il calendario MXGP 2021 dovrebbe essere rilasciato e dovrebbe vedere la nuova stagione iniziare all’inizio di aprile, dando alle squadre e ai piloti del Gran Premio un periodo di quattro mesi per il recupero, i test e l’allenamento. Cairoli ha questo periodo per analizzare una soluzione in vista della sua diciottesima stagione iridata.

Cairoli to play waiting game with left knee issue
Red Bull KTM’s Tony Cairoli is undecided on the right course of treatment to fix the left knee problem that has impeded his 2020 season and his close but unsuccessful bid for a record-equalling tenth FIM title. The Sicilian needed to have the joint drained several times since the resumption of racing in August and won the Grand Prix of Trentino at Pietramurata – the sixteenth round of eighteen this term – after having a cortisone injection.
The close proximity of the races and the small window of recovery time between GPs has been an obstacle for the 35-year old, who has also suffered to match the intensity of his rivals when it comes to time-attacks in Timed Practice for gate positions. Although Cairoli’s starts have been typically strong with the KTM 450 SX-F he has struggled in Free Practice sessions to get on the pace.
The problem seems to be related to the cartilage and contact between the bones. “I’ve seen a lot of doctors, including Dr Claes who operated on me a few times, and they say there is not much can be done,” he said exclusively. “The knee is not in line and it is pushing bone-to-bone. There is no major problem…but it is the liquid that gives me pain and less mobility. When you bend it too much on these kinds of hard-pack tracks [like Pietramurata] then you have a lot of pain for a lap and a half and you need to re-group. It’s not ideal.”
The 2021 MXGP calendar is due to be released next week and should see the new season starting in early April, giving Grand Prix teams and riders a four-month period for recuperation, testing and training. Cairoli has this period to analyse a solution ahead of his eighteenth world championship campaign.
