“Il formato di un giorno lo rende meno fisico” Gautier Paulin sulla prospettiva di tre Gran Premi in una settimana
Il pilota della Monster Energy Yamaha Gautier Paulin sarà uno dei tanti piloti della MXGP gettati nello “sconosciuto” quando il Campionato mondiale di motocross FIM 2020 riprenderà con un piano di tre date in Lettonia il mese prossimo.
Il Gran Premio di “Lettonia”, “Riga” e “Kegums” si svolgeranno domenica 9, mercoledì 12 e domenica 16 agosto e darà il via a tredici round in più nel calendario 2020, anche se permangono voci sulla stabilità delle partite in Turchia e Argentina. Un campionato più piccolo e uno limitato principalmente a soli sette paesi non sono le uniche modifiche apportate nel tentativo di completare una campagna credibile nel 2020. L’uso di un format di un giorno per i round europei (tutti tranne uno nella lista attuale) significa un programma di gare condensato e l’abbandono delle manche di qualificazione; un ingrediente di un fine settimana MXGP in uso da un decennio.
I piloti come Paulin dovranno adattarsi a una gara più intensa che non richiederà lo stesso tempo di pista di un Gran Premio standard. Ci sarà molto meno spazio per l’errore, sia nel giorno della gara che per il recupero tra gli eventi. “Correre tre GP in una settimana è molto diverso, ma la soluzione “un giorno” lo rende meno fisico”, ha detto il francese, esclusivamente. “È una situazione totalmente nuova alla quale dovremo adattarci, ma per me va bene. Sono positivo sulle piste che abbiamo nel calendario, anche se non sarei sorpreso se vedessimo alcuni cambiamenti “.
Viaggi a Kegums, tre volte a Lommel in Belgio e Mantova in Italia significano un sacco di terreno sabbioso da affrontare. Anche se questi sono compensati da prove su terreni duri in Italia, Turchia e Regno Unito. “Spero che avremo alcune variazioni, anche se rimaniamo in soli tre-quattro paesi”, ha aggiunto Paulin. “L’importante è tornare a correre per gli sponsor e per i fan. Di sicuro, sarà un anno strano in quasi tutti gli aspetti a causa delle folle più piccole e del distanziamento sociale quando il motocross è uno sport vicino ai fan. “
MXGP potrebbe essere ai margini di uno spostamento del calendario e la transizione con gli sviluppi di COVID-19 in tutto il mondo significa che i viaggi e l’organizzazione possono essere difficili da pianificare e prevedere. Se il 2020 riprenderà con i tre round, quattro e cinque in Lettonia, allora Kegums sarà un terreno di caccia felice per Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM, Tim Gajser della HRC e Romain Febvre di Monster Energy Kawasaki: il trio ha vinto nove delle dieci moto tra di loro dal 2015. Lo stesso Paulin ha guidato il quinquennio del Team France per il successo del Motocross delle Nazioni con la vittoria del paese a Kegums nel 2014.
“Sono davvero entusiasta che le corse siano tornate. Formula 1, MotoGP e Supercross sono tornate. Ora non vedo l’ora che torni MXGP! Il calendario sembra un po ‘strano, ma è così e dobbiamo adattarci alla situazione. Sono pronto a correre, come pilota. La moto è davvero bella all’inizio della stagione e ne sono ancora molto contento. Non vedo l’ora di tornare di nuovo a correre! Sono in salute e mi sento bene. Mancano ancora alcune settimane, ma arriverà molto velocemente su una bella pista in cui ho grandi ricordi. Ho vinto lì il Motocross delle Nazioni e ho avuto alcuni podi anche in Lettonia. Non vedo l’ora di farlo e non vedo l’ora di tornare dietro al cancello con il mio YZ450FM! ”

“The one-day format makes it less physical” Gautier Paulin on the prospect of three Grands Prix in one week
Monster Energy Yamaha rider Gautier Paulin will be one of many MXGP racers thrown into the ‘unknown’ when the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship resumes with a three-date plan in Latvia next month.
The Grands Prix of ‘Latvia’, ‘Riga’ and ‘Kegums’ will take place on Sunday 9th August, Wednesday 12th and Sunday 16th and will kick off thirteen more rounds on the 2020 calendar – even if rumours persist around the stability of fixtures in Turkey and Argentina. A smaller championship and one restricted to principally to just seven countries are not the only alterations made in an effort to complete a creditable campaign in 2020. The use of a one-day format for European rounds (all but one on the current list) means a condensed race schedule and the abandonment of the Qualification Heat; an ingredient of an MXGP weekend that has been in use for a decade.
Riders like Paulin will have to adjust to a more intense contest that will not require the same amount of track time as a standard Grand Prix. There will have far less room for error, both on race day and for recovery between events. “Racing three GPs in one week is very different but the ‘one-day’ makes it less physical,” the Frenchman said, exclusively. “It’s a totally new situation that we will have to adapt to, but that’s fine for me. I’m positive about the tracks we have on the calendar although I would not be surprised if we’ll see some changes.”
Trips to Kegums, three times to Lommel in Belgium and Mantova in Italy means plenty of sandy terrain to tackle. Although these are offset by hard-pack/soil tests in Italy, Turkey and the UK. “I hope we’ll have some variation, even if we do stay in just three-four countries,” Paulin added. “The main thing is to be back racing for the sponsors and for the fans. For sure, it will be a strange year in almost every aspect because of the smaller crowds and the social distancing when motocross is a close sport to the fans.”
MXGP could be on the fringe of a calendar shift and the transition with COVID-19 developments around the world mean that travel and organisation can be difficult to plan and predict. If 2020 does resume with rounds three, four and five in Latvia then Kegums will be a happy hunting ground for Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings, HRC’s Tim Gajser and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Romain Febvre: the trio have won nine of the ten motos between them since 2015. Paulin himself headed Team France’s five-year span of Motocross of Nations success with the country’s victory at Kegums in 2014.
“I am really excited that racing is back. Formula 1, MotoGP and Supercross have been back. Now I just cannot wait for MXGP to come back! The calendar looks a bit strange, but it is like this and we have to adapt to the situation. I am ready to race, as a racer. The bike was really nice at the beginning of the season and I am still really happy with it. I just cannot wait to be back racing again! I am healthy and feel good. We still have a few weeks to go, but it will arrive really quick at a nice track that I have great memories at. I won the Motocross of Nations there and have had a few podiums in Latvia too. I am definitely looking forward to it and cannot wait to be back behind the gate with my YZ450FM!”
