Romain Febvre and Clement Desalle: Ready for Latvian triple-header

Monster Energy Kawasaki riders Romain Febvre and Clement Desalle will head to the Kegums circuit in Latvia with a lot of confidence. While everyone is looking at Red Bull KTM factory riders Jeffery Herlings and Antonio Cairoli, and Team HRC rider Tim Gajser, the two green machine riders have good records at Latvia and will want to continue their love affair with Kegums.

Febvre the 2015 World MXGP champion finished second last year on equal points to GP winner Gajser and has constantly been a top three guy around the white sand in Latvia. The Frenchman has also won races at Kegums in 2015 and 2016 on his way to podium finishes. As for Desalle, the Belgian veteran won the GP of Latvia back in 2010 and in fact won his first ever Grand Prix race at Kegums in 2009, going 1-5 for second overall behind Cairoli.

For Febvre, the four months of lockdown have helped him recover from a nasty knee injury and he is now 100% and ready to battle the big guns of the MXGP class and finally get a GP victory at Kegums.

“I am doing good,” Febvre said. “I was recovering with my knee and obviously I couldn’t ride the first two GPs because of that. I was disappointed about that, but now I am 100% fit and riding full time. We go racing in three weeks now, we just want to go racing. It will be different, but we need to adapt ourselves. Three races in a row at the same track is good, we don’t have to move and maybe we even ride between the three races. It is just the one-day format, so that should be possible (the three GPs in a row)”.

Going 7-1 at Kegums in 2019 wasn’t enough to beat Gajser for the overall, but he knows that with the right preparation, he can fight with the likes of Gajser, Herlings and Cairoli when we restart the GP season.

“Last year I missed the victory,” Febvre said. “I was the same points as Gajser, and I like Latvia. When you are not racing people forget you, but I don’t care. I just want to go racing with the new bike and see what I can do. The championship will be hard for me, because I missed two races, and I need to give it my all now and win some races and GPs.

As for Desalle, he liked the look of the MXGP calendar when it came out last week and will enjoy getting back to racing and all the changes the calendar brings with different formats and single day racing.

“Actually,” Desalle said. “It is a good calendar; they did a good job and it isn’t easy with this situation. We had to work with countries where it is possible. Now that this calendar is out, it is great for me to get more training and I know what I am working for and I need to be ready for this new format for the GPs. It is difficult for me (taking time off because of the coronavirus). I always say I am used to living with adrenaline and suddenly it isn’t there anymore and that isn’t easy. I started the season okay, some negative points that I worked on. I need to improve my starts. I had a good feeling with my riding, and it gave me satisfaction. For me, if I can have good starts, I can do good. I am confident and I am working on those things.”

So, keep your eyes out for the green machines of Febvre and Desalle as they return to a place, they both enjoy and have had success. No doubt the two Monster Energy Kawasaki riders will want to return to racing with race wins, GP wins and a lot of championship points.
