Herlings and Geerts win in Matterley Basin for the MXGP of Great Britain
Matterley Basin (Gran Bretagna) 1 MARZO 2020 – Il primo round del FIM Motocross World Championship stagione 2020 si è concluso qui a Matterley Basin. La MXGP di Gran Bretagna ha visto un sacco di azione durante il fine settimana, come Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Jeffrey Herlings e Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 pilota, Jago Geerts prendere le vittorie assolute in MXGP e MX2.
Il clima soleggiato nella mattinata di Domenica ha posto le basi per una giornata fantastica, con la corsa ancora più eccitante del previsto. Questo è stato un piacere per i tifosi inglesi, che hanno testimoniato l’inizio della nuova stagione di MXGP.
Entrando nel fine settimana, il vincitore assoluto per la classe MXGP era difficile da prevedere. Con una line-up di piloti molto forti, che si sono allenati duramente questo inverno, l’elenco dei preferiti è senza fine.
A seguito di prove di Sabato, team HRC pilota, Tim Gajser, era tra i favoriti, ha segnato il tempo migliore sul giro durante la sessione. In secondo luogo è stato Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Arminas Jasikonis, seguito dal pilota Red Bull KTM Factory Antonio Cairoli.
Nella gara del weekend di apertura, è stato il Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Jeremy Seewer che ha sostenuto il primo FOX Holeshot della stagione, seguito da vicino da Herlings e Gajser. La nuova recluta del Team HRC e MXGP rookie, Mitch Evans, ha ottenuto un inizio in quinta. Ma dietro la curva in discesa dopo la pitlane Gajser si è trovato nei guai, ha sbattuto il manubrio con Honda SR Motoblouz Jeremy Van Horebeek, che lo ha lasciato retrocedere dalla 13° posizione.
Al primo giro, Evans era in movimento veloce come ha fatto una mossa sul Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Jeremy Seewer. Il vincitore Gran Bretagna 2013 MXGP, Clement Desalle di Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team anche avuto una buona partenza in quarta, prima di cadere nel secondo giro e scendendo al 7 °.
Herlings ha continuato il suo vantaggio, Seewer ha trovato sulla sua schiena Evans, battendo il pilota ufficiale Honda fino a P3. Nel frattempo la battaglia per 4°, 5° e 6° era tra Cairoli, Desalle e il Standing Construct Gas Gas MXGP pilota Glenn Coldenhoff. Desalle ha fatto forza sulla sua strada oltre al pilota GasGas factory, mentre Cairoli è riuscito a mantenere la posizione di 4°.
Verso la fine della gara, Gajser si trovò a combattere col campione del mondo MX2 2019, Jorge Prado di Red Bull KTM Factory, con il pilota Honda in grado di passare il rookie MXGP. Ha poi messo gli occhi per le posizioni più alte, ma una caduta all’ultima curva prima del traguardo dell’ultimo giro lo ha lasciato accontentarsi della posizione 8 in gara, permettendo Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, Gautier Paulin di salire al P7.
Alla fine è stato Herlings che ha preso la vittoria con uno 0:11,879 secondi di vantaggio su Seewer in seconda. Avere un giro fantastico e facendo un debutto impressionante per la sua campagna MXGP rookie è stato Mitch Evans che si è piazzato 3° in gara.
In gara due, è stata la SM Action MC Migliori di J1 Corsa Henry Jacobi che ha preso la FOX Holeshot, ma Gajser mosse rapidamente al comando, con Cairoli che lo seguiva per passare anche Jacobi. Nel frattempo Herlings era dietro in 4° e 5° Paulin. Sfortuna per Evans, che è venuto intorno alla prima curva turno praticamente infondo, lasciandolo con un sacco di lavoro da fare in questa seconda gara MXGP.
Dal 4° giro, Herlings era già carica, facendo un passaggio su Cairoli per il 2° posto. Gautier Paulin era seduto al 3°, dove è rimasto per tutta la gara, mantenendo anche Desalle a bada al 4°. Da allora in poi la parte superiore fino al 5° è rimasta la stessa fino alla fine della gara, mentre i combattimenti avvenivano dietro.
Mitch Evans trovò a muoversi in fretta, e dopo 5 giri era già in 6° posizione mentre passava sia Seewer e Jacobi. Seewer poi è venuto sotto la minaccia da parte del 259° Coldenhoff, con il pilota olandese in grado di rendere il passaggio al giro 11.
Con due giri dalla fine, Desalle e Coldenhoff si sono trovati in una intensa battaglia, con i due piloti che arrivano vicini gli uni agli altri in diverse occasioni, ma il pilota Monster Energy Kawasaki è rimasto forte per finire 5°. Il compagno di Desalle della squadra Monster Energy Kawasaki Romain Febvre non si allineò alle gare di domenica per un infortunio al ginocchio durante la scorsa settimana, tornerà a correre a Valkenswaard la prossima settimana.
Gajser ha sostenuto la vittoria e con essa un secondo posto assoluto, mentre Herlings ha fatto un forte come-back come il vincitore assoluto del Gran Premio. Cairoli ha finito 3° sia in gara e sul podio.
Jeffrey Herlings: “Sicuramente non c’è modo migliore per iniziare la stagione che iniziare con una vittoria. Ho detto che non avevo bisogno di vincere ogni GP quest’anno, ma è stata una giornata buona. Ho fatto un 1-2, abbiamo migliorato molto anche come squadra e la mia moto va sempre meglio. Grazie alla Red Bull KTM Racing Team per il grande lavoro che hanno fatto. Non vedo l’ora di Valkenswaard, sono molto eccitato di andare al mio GP di casa “.
Tim Gajser: “Nel complesso Sono super felice di finire sul podio, sono solo deluso per la mia prima gara che sono caduto due volte, ma alla seconda gara ho avuto un buon inizio fin dall’inizio, ho preso una vittoria abbastanza comoda e non vedo l’ora di vedere cosa succede il prossimo fine settimana”
Antonio Cairoli: “Sono molto soddisfatto, la mia spalla sta migliorando, ma purtroppo ho girato il mio ginocchio in allenamento, ma sono grato di non aver gareggiato con un sacco di dolore oggi. La pista era molto impegnativa, soprattutto durante la seconda gara. Volevo uscire da questa gara piuttosto difficile e vedere cosa avrei potuto essere in grado di fare e alla fine è stato un buon fine settimana e sono felice di essere sul podio”

Mentre tutti si aspettavano le battaglie intense nella classe MXGP, era chiaro che i tifosi sono stati piacevolmente sorpresi come i piloti MX2 consegnati questo e molto altro.
Nella gara di apertura, è stato il pilota della Red Bull KTM Factory Tom Vialle ad iniziare la gara con la FOX Holeshot. Subito il giovane francese ha tirato un gap sui suoi concorrenti e ha guidato comodamente in 1° posizione per la maggior parte della gara.
Di F&H Kawasaki Racing Mathys Boisrame ha ottenuto un grande inizio mentre seguiva Vialle fino al giro 5, quando la nuova recluta della Red Bull KTM Factory Rene Hofer realizza un passaggio filtrante di successo per la seconda posizione. Il pilota Hitachi Milwaukee Conrad Mewse anche spinto per il terzo.
L’azione di gara è stata impressionante, così come 3 piloti si sono dati battaglia per il 2°, con Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Jago Geerts che sale dal 4° al 2° al sesto giro, quando passava Mewse e Mikkel Haarup.
Quello stesso giro segna grandi cambiamenti alla top 5, con Boisrame che scende permettendo a Geerts, Mewse, Haarup e Jed Beaton di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna di cambiare posizione. Nei successivi due giri, Beaton fece alcuni rapidi movimenti su Mewse e Haarup.
Al giro 8 Vialle ha fatto un errore ed è caduto perdendo il comando. Questo Geerts prende la sua prima vittoria della stagione, con Beaton che finisce 2° e Haarup fa un debutto fantastico per la sua stagione MX2 con un 3°. Alla fine Vialle tagliò il traguardo in 6° posizione.
In gara due, era un altro FOX Holeshot del Red Bull KTM Factory, ma questa volta da Rene Hofer. Geerts era proprio lì in P2 e Vialle in 4° posizione. SM Action MC Migliori Maxime Renaux ha ottenuto un grande inizio in 6° posizione, seguito da Beaton e Boisrame.
Il favorito in campionato, Thomas Kjer Olsen di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Team ha ottenuto un inizio migliore nella seconda gara, mentre attraversava la linea al 5° posto nel primo giro.
Dal secondo giro, Hofer continuò a guidare la gara dal suo compagno Vialle, mentre Olsen si spostò in 3° seguito da Renaux e Beaton. Nel frattempo il vincitore di gara 1, Jago Geerts è uscito 2° ma finì di nuovo all’ottavo posto, mettendo le probabilità di una vittoria complessiva a rischio.
La parte superiore dei 5 è rimasta la stessa fino al giro 8 quando Haarup, Geerts e Boisrame si sono spostati fino al 4°, 5° e 6°.
Hofer ha condotto la maggior parte della seconda gara, mantenendo il suo compagno di squadra a bada, prima che Vialle è stato in grado di passare il giovane austriaco, con 3 giri dalla fine. Allo stesso tempo, Haarup ha fatto una mossa sul collega danese, Thomas Kjer Olsen di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory, per la 3° posizione.
Con 2 giri alla fine, Geerts è stato anche in grado di passare Olsen per il quarto posto, che gli ha consegnato la vittoria assoluta qui a Matterley Basin, la prima della sua carriera.

Non vedo l’ora di Valkenswaard il prossimo fine settimana, è come il mio GP di casa. Ho avuto una buona partenza nella seconda manche e ho appena lottato per la vittoria, ho avuto un incidente e ho sbattuto la spalla un po ‘così sono tornato al quarto posto, ma io sono super felice, mi sento come se la mia guida sia davvero buono ora ”
Tom Vialle: “Ho iniziato la stagione molto bene, durante la prima gara mi sentivo davvero a mio agio in prima posizione ma poi ho fatto un errore su un salto, mentre nella seconda gara sono riuscito ad andare in testa e sono riuscito a vincere la gara. Sto già pensando al prossimo GP”
Mikkel Haarup: Sono solo felice. Non sono venuto qui per lottare per la gara, ma alla fine sono riuscito a finire con un terzo assoluto che è incredibile. Ho avuto due gare decenti, buona guida e desidero ringraziare F & H Kawasaki e tutti quelli che mi sostengono “.

Herlings and Geerts win in Matterley Basin for the MXGP of Great Britain
MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 1 March 2020 – The first round of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship season has concluded here at Matterley Basin. The MXGP of Great Britain saw plenty of action over the weekend, as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 rider, Jago Geerts took the overall victories in MXGP and MX2.
The sunny weather on Sunday morning set the stage for a fantastic day, with the racing even more exciting than expected. This was a treat for the British fans, who got to witness the start of the brand-new MXGP season.
Going into the weekend, the overall winner for the MXGP class was hard to predict. With a full line-up of extremely strong riders, who have been training hard this winter, the list of favourites was never ending.
Following Saturday’s practice session, Team HRC rider, Tim Gajser, was among the top favourites as he clocked in the fastest lap-time during the session. Second was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis, followed by Red Bull KTM Factory pilot Antonio Cairoli.
In the opening race of the weekend, it was the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory’s Jeremy Seewer who claimed the first FOX Holeshot of the season, closely followed by Herlings and Gajser. Team HRC’s newest recruit and MXGP rookie, Mitch Evans, also got off to a flying start in fifth. But on the downhill corner after pitlane Gajser found himself in trouble as he banged bars with Honda SR Motoblouz’s Jeremy Van Horebeek, which left him having to fight back from 13th position.
On the opening lap, Evans was moving quick as he made a move on the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory’s Jeremy Seewer. The 2013 MXGP of Great Britain winner, Clement Desalle of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team also got a good start in fourth, before getting cross-rutted in the second lap and falling down to 7th.
As Herlings continued his lead, Seewer found his way back past Evans, knocking the factory Honda rider down to P3. Meanwhile the battle for 4th, 5th and 6th was on between Cairoli, Desalle and the Standing Construct Gas Gas MXGP rider Glenn Coldenhoff. Desalle did muscle his way past the GasGas Factory rider, while Cairoli was able to maintain his 4th place position.
Towards the end of the race, Gajser found himself battling the 2019 MX2 World Champion, Jorge Prado of Red Bull KTM Factory, with the Honda rider able to pass the MXGP rookie. He then set his sights for higher positions, but a crash on the last corner before the Monster Energy finish line of the last lap left him having to settle for P8 in the race, allowing Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider, Gautier Paulin to move up a position to P7.
In the end it was Herlings who took the race win with a 0:11.879 second lead over Seewer in second. Having a fantastic ride and making an impressive debut to his MXGP rookie campaign was Mitch Evans who placed 3rd in the race.
In race two, it was the SM Action M.C Migliori – J1 Racing’s Henry Jacobi who took the FOX Holeshot, but Gajser moved swiftly into the lead, with Cairoli following him to also pass Jacobi. Meanwhile Herlings was behind in 4th and Paulin in 5th. Bad luck for Evans, who came around the first turn virtually last, leaving him with a lot of work to do in this second MXGP race.
By lap 4, Herlings was already charging, making a pass on Cairoli for 2nd position. Gautier Paulin was sitting in 3rd, where he remained throughout the race, also keeping Desalle at bay in 4th. From then onwards the top 5 remained the same until the race concluded, while the battles heated up behind.
Mitch Evans found himself moving quickly, and by lap 5 was already in 6th position as he passed both Seewer and Jacobi. Seewer then came under threat by the #259 of Coldenhoff, with the Dutch rider able to make the pass stick on lap 11.
With two laps to go, Desalle and Coldenhoff found themselves in an intense battle, with the two riders getting close to each other on several occasions, but the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider stayed strong to finish 5th. Desalle team-mate Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Romain Febvre did not line up at Sunday’s races as for an injury to his knee during the past week, he’ll be back racing in Valkenswaard next week.
Gajser claimed the race win and with it a second overall, while Herlings made a strong come-back as the overall Grand Prix winner. Cairoli finished 3rd both in the race and the podium.
Jeffrey Herlings: “Definitely there is no better way to start the season than to start with a win. I said I did not need to win every GP this year but it was a good day. I made a 1-2, we have improved a lot also as a team as my bike is getting better and better. Thanks to Red Bull KTM racing Team for the great job they did. I’m really looking forward to Valkenswaard, I’m very excited to go to my home GP.”
Tim Gajser: “Overall I’m super happy to finish on the podium, I’m just disappointed for my first race as I crashed twice, but at the second race I had a good start from the beginning, I made a quite comfortable win and I can’t wait to see what happens next weekend”
Antonio Cairoli: “I’m very satisfied, my shoulder is getting better but unfortunately I twisted my knee in a training but I’m thankful I did not come out with a lot of pain today. The track was very challenging, especially during the second race. I wanted to go out this round taking easy and see what I could be capable of and eventually it was a good weekend and I’m happy to be on the podium”

While everyone expected the battles to be intense in the MXGP class, it was clear that the fans were pleasantly surprised as the MX2 riders delivered that and much more.
In the opening race, it was the Red Bull KTM Factory rider Tom Vialle starting the race with the FOX Holeshot. Straight away the young Frenchman pulled a gap on his competitors and rode comfortably in 1st for the majority of the race.
F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame also got off to a great start as he followed Vialle until lap 5, when Red Bull KTM Factory’s newest recruit Rene Hofer made a successful pass for second position. The Hitachi fuelled by Milwaukee rider Conrad Mewse also pushed for third.
The race action was impressive, as 3 riders battled for 2nd, with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory’s Jago Geerts moving up from 4th to 2nd on lap 6, when he passed Mewse and F&H Kawasaki Racing rider Mikkel Haarup.
That very same lap saw big changes to the top 5, with Boisrame fading allowing Geerts, Mewse, Haarup and Jed Beaton of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna to move up a position. In the next two laps, Beaton made some swift moves on Mewse and Haarup.
On lap 8 Vialle made a mistake and crashed out of the lead. This handed Geerts his first race win of the season, with Beaton finishing 2nd and Haarup making a fantastic debut to his MX2 season with a 3rd. In the end Vialle crossed the line in 6th position.
In race two, it was another FOX Holeshot from Red Bull KTM Factory but this time by Rene Hofer. Geerts was right there in P2 and Vialle in 4th place. SM Action M.C Migliori – J1 Racing’s Maxime Renaux also got off to a great start in 6th position, followed by Beaton and Boisrame.
The championship favourite, Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Team got off to a much better start in the second race, as he crossed the line 5th on the opening lap.
By the second lap, Hofer continued to lead from his team-mate Vialle, while Olsen moved into 3rd followed by Renaux and Beaton. Meanwhile race 1 winner, Jago Geerts crashed out of 2nd and was back down in 8th place, putting his chances of an overall at risk.
The top 5 remained the same until lap 8 when Haarup, Geerts and Boisrame moved up to 4th, 5th and 6th.
Hofer led the majority of the second race, keeping his team-mate at bay, before Vialle was able to pass the young Austrian, with 3 laps to go. At the same time, Haarup made a move on fellow Dane, Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory, for 3rd.
With 2 laps remaining, Geerts was also able to pass Olsen for fourth, which handed him the overall victory here at Matterley Basin, the first of his career.
Jago Geerts: “It’s really a good feeling to pick my first overall win here in Matterley Basin, At the first heat I had a small gift from Tom (Vialle). I’m really looking forward to Valkenswaard next weekend, it’s like my own GP. I had a really good start in second heat and I just battled for the lead, I had a crash and beat my shoulder a bit so I came back to fourth, but I’m super happy, I feel like my riding is really good now”
Tom Vialle: “I started the season really good, during the first race I felt really comfortable in first but then I made a mistake on a jump, while in the second race I was leading and I managed to win the race. I’m already looking forward to next GP”
Mikkel Haarup: I’m just happy. I did not come here to contend for the race but at the end I managed to finish with a third overall which is amazing. I had two decent races, good riding I wish to thank F&H Kawasaki and everybody who supports me.”
