Nessuna modifica al limite di età MX2 (23 years)
Una delle voci che hanno preso slancio in MXGP durante i Gran Premi hanno riguardato un’altra possibile revisione dei 23 anni e la sentenza del titolo per la classe MX2. La velocità e la capacità del campione in carica Jorge Prado hanno gettato più luce sulle restrizioni di età del Campionato Mondiale FIM e in particolare un altro regolamento che stabilisce che i piloti sono obbligati a lasciare la classe se rivendicano il titolo due volte. Prado, che ha appena diciotto anni, potrebbe testare e allenarsi con un 450 per MXGP prima del suo diciannovesimo compleanno.
La serie di alimentazione per MX2, l’attuale EMX250, ora ha anche un limite di 23 anni e questo nuovo orientamento del campionato europeo ha portato alcuni a chiedersi se MX2 potrebbe essere spinto a 25 o abolito del tutto.
David Luongo, vicepresidente della Youthstream, ha confermato che non sono previsti cambiamenti nel panorama normativo della MX2 e che il tetto attuale dell’età è stato utile per dare il meglio del raccolto nella classe regina MXGP. È entrato in vigore nel 2010 e il titolo è stato rivisto due volte dal 2013, in gran parte per accogliere il successo e il travaglio di Jeffrey Herlings nella categoria.
“Non possiamo cambiare le regole per un singolo caso altrimenti sarebbe cambiato ogni due anni a seconda di chi è il posto nel campionato”, ragionò Luongo. “Jorge è un grande talento e ha una grande possibilità di vincere il campionato del mondo, ma ci sono anche altri in competizione per questo”.
“Dobbiamo sempre vedere il quadro generale e questa è la straordinaria quantità di talento che si trova nella classe MXGP negli ultimi sei anni grazie a questa sentenza”, ha aggiunto Luongo. “Ora possiamo vedere il livello di MXGP in tutto il mondo e quando si tratta di MXoN e non vogliamo cambiare questo sistema piramidale. La regola 23 è importante in questo sistema da EMX125, EMX250 e MXGP. “
I piloti di età superiore ai 23 anni e impossibilitati a fare il salto in MXGP hanno poca altra possibilità per competere a livello internazionale al di fuori delle serie di motocross nazionali. Solo il campionato a due tempi EMX2T a sette round offre uno sbocco e viene guidato dal 37enne Brad Anderson.

No change to MX2 23 age limit planned
One of the rumours gathering momentum in MXGP during last week’s British Grand Prix concerned another possible revision to the 23-year and title ruling for the MX2 class. The speed and ability of defending champion Jorge Prado has thrown more light onto the age restrictions of the FIM World Championship and in particular another regulation that states riders are obliged to move out of the class if they claim the title twice. Prado, who is just eighteen, could be testing and training with a 450 for MXGP before his nineteenth birthday.
The feeder series to MX2, EMX250, now also has a 23-age cap and this new orientation of the European Championship has led some to question whether MX2 could be pushed to 25 or abolished altogether.
At Matterley Basin Youthstream VP David Luongo confirmed that no changes are planned to the regulatory landscape of MX2 and the current age ceiling has been beneficial for nudging the best of the crop in the premier class of MXGP. It came into place in 2010, and the title stipulation has been revised twice since 2013, largely to accommodate Jeffrey Herlings’ teenage success and travails in the category.
“We cannot change the rules for an individual case otherwise it would be changed every other year depending on who is where in the championship,” Luongo reasoned. “Jorge is a big talent and has a big chance to win the world championship but there are also others competing for it.”
“We have to always see the big picture and that is the amazing amount of talent that is in the MXGP class over the last six years thanks to this ruling,” Luongo added. “We can see the level of MXGP now worldwide and when it comes to MXoN and we don’t want to change this pyramid system. The 23 rule is important in this system from EMX125, EMX250 and into MXGP.”
Riders older than 23 and unable to make the grade in MXGP have little other option to compete internationally outside of domestic motocross series’. Only the seven-round EMX2T two-stroke championship offers an outlet and is being led by 37 year old Brit Brad Anderson.
