Herlings a caccia del 101
Il campione del mondo MXGP Jeffrey Herlings ha sottolineato ancora una volta che il suo obiettivo principale nel Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross è quello di diventare il pilota di maggior successo di sempre e di sostituire le vittorie del 101 Grand Prix di Stefan Everts.
Il Belga ha raggiunto la soglia dei 101 con la Francia e il suo ultimo Grand Prix nel 2006 in quella che fu una delle più grandi stagioni della storia del motocross FIM. La retata era stata costruita per quindici anni della sua carriera e si credeva che fosse “intoccabile”.
Herlings ha accumulato 61 sorprendenti vittorie nella classe MX2 dal 2010, inclusi sette anni consecutivi a Valkenswaard per il suo Gran Premio di casa. In soli due mandati nella classe regina Herlings ha collezionato 23 vittorie: 17 solo nel 2018.
#84 ha terminato l’ultimo mandato con il bottino di Imola e appropriato dell’84° trofeo vinto nella carriera, il che significa che il suo obiettivo potrebbe essere raggiunto con un simile livello di dominio nel 2019.
“Ricordo ancora di essere entrato in scena nel 2010 a quindici anni e qui siamo quasi dieci anni dopo; immagina dieci anni dopo! “ha detto al Gran Premio dei Paesi Bassi ad Assen e dopo aver confermato la sua prima corona MXGP con la vittoria n.83 prima di andare ad Imola. “Penso che abbiamo già superato il punto a metà [della sua carriera]”, ha aggiunto. “Ho perso due campionati, forse tre. In questo momento siamo ad 83 vittorie e 4 campionati – se ho ragione – l’obiettivo principale è quello di ottenere 101 vittorie in GP, quindi ne sono rimasti 18 per battere quel record “.
17 successi delle 20 opportunità del 2019 renderanno il sogno una realtà. Herlings è più modesto sull’altra distinzione di Everts di dieci titoli FIM.
“Per quanto riguarda i campionati è difficile da dire”, ha ammesso. “La stagione sta diventando così lunga e sono stato fortunato con la mia clavicola rotta perché ho perso solo una gara, immagina se fosse una caviglia ed erano sei-otto settimane: sarei stato sostanzialmente fuori dal campionato. Devi essere in forma in questo sport ma sfortunatamente il livello di rischio è piuttosto alto. Dovremo vedere, ma spero che ne riesca a fare ancora un paio. “

Herlings hunting the 101
MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings has outlined again that his principal goal in the FIM Motocross World Championship is to become the most successful rider ever and supersede Stefan Everts’ 101 Grand Prix win total.
The Belgium reached the 101 mark with in France and his very last Grand Prix race back in 2006 in what was one of the greatest seasons in FIM motocross history. The haul had been built over fifteen years of his career and was believed to be ‘untouchable’.
Herlings accumulated an astonishing 61 wins in the MX2 class since 2010 including seven years in a row at Valkenswaard for his home Grand Prix. In just two terms in the premier class Herlings has racked-up 23 victories: 17 in 2018 alone.
#84 finished the last term with spoils at Imola and (appropriately) an 84th career winner’s trophy, meaning his objective could even be reached with a similar level of dominance in 2019.
“I still remember coming onto the scene in 2010 as a fifteen year old and here we are nearly ten years later; imagine ten years further!” he said at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands at Assen and after confirming his maiden MXGP crown with win No.83 before heading to Imola. “I think we are already past the halfway point [of his career],” he added. “I missed out on two championships, maybe three. Right now we are on 83 wins and 4 championships – if I am correct – and the main goal is to get 101 GP wins, so that’s 18 left to beat that record.”
17 successes from the 20 opportunities in 2019 will make the dream a reality. Herlings is more modest about Everts’ other distinction of ten FIM titles. “Regarding championships it is hard to say,” he admitted. “[The season] is getting so long and I was lucky with my broken collarbone because I missed only one race, imagine if it was an ankle and it was six-eight weeks: I would have been out of the championship basically. You have to be fit in this sport but unfortunately the risk level is pretty high. We’ll have to see but hopefully [I’ll] clinch a few more.”
