MX GP 19 – ASSEN
Il penultimo GP stagionale del Mondiale Motocross si è disputato nella Cattedrale della Velocità, la mitica Assen, in Olanda. Davanti alle tribune gremite di pubblico della famosa ultima chicane e parte del rettilineo d’arrivo della storica pista d’asfalto, i piloti del team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing – De Carli hanno dato spettacolo con una prestazione eccellente in entrambe le categorie. Antonio Cairoli (KTM 450 SX-F) è salito sul secondo gradino del podio grazie a due secondi posti, ottenuti in lotta con il ‘padrone di casa’ Jeffrey Herlings (KTM), che con una doppietta ha raccolto, con un GP d’anticipo, il suo quinto titolo iridato, il primo nella massima categoria.
I due si sono abbracciati a fine gara uno e sul podio, riconoscendo la grande stagione disputata da entrambi. Cairoli, secondo in qualifica, in gara uno ha segnato l’holeshot ma nel giro successivo è stato superato da Herlings. Tony ha tenuto bene il passo dell’olandese, solo a tre quarti di manche ha calato il ritmo, mentre Jeffrey con l’ennesimo successo di manche si è aggiudicato matematicamente il titolo MXGP. In gara due Cairoli è scattato al via intorno alla terza posizione, ma dopo due giri si è portato in testa superando Glenn Coldenhoff (KTM). Prima di metà manche ha però subito il ritorno di Herlings, che era incappato in una scivolata, passando in seconda posizione e mantenendola fino alla bandiera a scacchi, con ampio margine (più di trenta secondi) sul terzo, Coldenhoff.
Con i due secondi posti di manche Cairoli è salito sul secondo gradino del podio, raggiungendo il quattordicesimo podio stagionale.
Antonio Cairoli: “Per me è un onore essere secondo dietro a Jeffrey perché è sicuramente al momento il pilota più veloce del mondo, e insieme abbiamo fatto il vuoto dietro. Gli faccio i miei sinceri complimenti, è stato perfetto. Io ho fatto una delle mie migliori stagioni, però nel finale sono stato condizionato da qualche problema fisico e piccoli infortuni. So di poter migliorare per il prossimo anno, essere più competitivo e questo è il mio obiettivo per il futuro, lavorando con la squadra”.
Nella MX2, Jorge Prado (KTM 250 SX-F) ha ripreso la sua splendida marcia verso il primo titolo iridato. Lo spagnolo del team De Carli sul fondo sabbioso della pista olandese si è dimostrato velocissimo ed ha ottenuto una perentoria doppia vittoria, che lo avvicina all’obiettivo finale: nell’ultimo GP (Imola) gli basterà raccogliere almeno quattro punti nelle due manche, e potrà festeggiare il suo primo titolo, a soli diciassette anni. Il campione in carica Pauls Jonass (KTM), sempre secondo in campionato, non ha trovato una delle sue giornate migliori e si è classificato sesto di giornata. Per Prado undicesima vittoria di GP stagionale: in gara uno è passato in testa nel sesto giro dopo aver superato Lawrence (Honda); in gara due ha dominato dal primo all’ultimo giro.
Jorge Prado: “Prima di tutto congratulazioni a Jeffrey Herlings perché è stato protagonista di una stagione incredibile, eccellente. Il mio weekend è andato bene, ieri ho vinto la gara di qualifica, ed è cresciuta la fiducia per oggi, dove ho vinto entrambe le gare, quindi non potevo chiedere un GP migliore e non vedo l’ora di scendere in pista a Imola”.
Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director: “Questo è speciale. Jeffrey è con noi dal 2009 e abbiamo attraversato molti alti e bassi. Quando era bambino tutto andava sempre per il meglio, ma poi ha avuto qualche brutto infortunio e ci sono stati molti giorni difficili con questo ragazzo, ma quando lo conosci e vedi quanti sforzi mette per ottenere i risultati, allora lui merita questo titolo più di chiunque altro. Anche Tony ha avuto una stagione fantastica ed è impressionante vedere cosa ha fatto, ma poi Jeffrey ha appena completato il suo lavoro. Tutti i nostri ragazzi fanno un grande sforzo ma Jeffrey è eccezionale. È molto emozionante vederlo a questo livello. Per molti anni le persone hanno parlato di lui come il miglior pilota del mondo, ma si è infortunato prima che potesse dimostrarlo sulla carta. Finalmente lo ha fatto, quindi è un momento speciale per tutti noi. ”
L’ultimo GP stagionale è in calendario per il weekend del 30 Settembre a Imola (I).

For the fourth year in a row the temporary and spectacularly set motocross course laid over the stadium section of the TT Circuit Assen provided a rough, tight and curvy test. The sand benefitted from a slightly revised layout for 2018 but made largely the same inventive use of space next to the vast grandstand that was filled with most of the 40,000 attendance.
Red Bull KTM came to the 19th round of 20 in MXGP having mathematically confirmed both MXGP and MX2 world titles and expecting to see the first of the season-long duels between Jeffrey Herlingsand Tony Cairoli as well as Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado decided on the bumpy Dutch terrain.
MXGP
Cairoli: “I feel good. It has been a long season and many things happened. At the beginning I was good and very prepared but in the last part I made a lot of mistakes and also mentally I was going up and down with some crashes, mistake and this-and-that. No complaints, like Jeffrey said he won 16 races from 19, so he was the fastest and the strongest all the time. We have to work if we want to keep with him and it’s an honour to finish behind Jeffrey because he is the fastest rider in the world at the moment; I didn’t finish second to a slow guy. I know I can still be competitive and have to work a bit harder to be strong the whole race but it is a nice challenge. Thanks to Red Bull KTM for making all this happen and being 1-2 in the championship again. We’ll see for the next two races. For sure Italy in a couple of weeks will be very busy for me and then the Motocross of Nations also. There was an incredible crowd here and it was good for the sport.”
Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director: “This is a special one. Jeffrey has been with us since 2009 and we have been through many ups-and-downs. When he was a kid everything was just getting better and better but then he got some nasty injuries and there were many tough days with this boy, but when you get to know him and see how much effort he puts in to get the results then he deserves this title more than anyone. Tony also had a fantastic season and it is impressive to see what he did but then Jeffrey just topped it off with his work. All our guys make a big effort but Jeffrey is outstanding. It is very emotional to see him at this level. For many years people have talked about him being the best rider in the world but he got injured before he could prove it on paper. Finally he did it, so it’s a special moment for all of us.”
MX2
MX2 Championship leader Jorge Prado will carry a 46 point advantage into the final Grand Prix of 2018 (with just 50 points remaining) after continuing his fantastic run of form at Assen. Prado tasted EMX125 title success at the circuit in 2015, a maiden trophy on his debut Grand Prix appearance in 2016 and was victorious in 2017. His eleventh triumph of the season today with clear-cut 1-1 moto performances means he stands close to his first MX2 World Championship in just his second season in the division and with the works KTM 250 SX-F.
Prado: “First of all congrats to Jeffrey, he did a great job this season. My weekend went pretty well and the Qualification Heat win gave me some good confidence. Two moto wins: it was a good day. I’ve always done quite well here and have always been on the podium. I think the track just suits my style of riding and I had good starts, which meant I could enjoy myself. I think I only need to finish 15-16th for the title now but I don’t want to finish 15th-16th! I will try to do my best as always. I have been working hard all season and will keep on doing the same in the last round.”
