Vlaanderen out of race action after first-moto crash at Sevlievo
La prestazione di gara di Calvin Vlaanderen a Sevlievo è stata interrotta da un incidente che ha subito al terzo giro della prima manche, quando il 22enne di Città del Capo ha perso la sua Honda CRF250RW mentre cercava di evitare Ben Watson che era caduto davanti di lui. Nonostante sia tornato in pista per la seconda gara, il portacolori del Team HRC nella categoria ha deciso di ritirarsi alla fine del giro di avvistamento perché il dolore e il disagio erano troppo forti per competere.
Il crollo di gara uno ha lasciato Vlaanderen malconcio e ferite su tutto il tronco, con la gamba destra che è la più ferita perché si è bloccata sotto la moto. Calvin ha fatto tutto ciò che era in suo potere per evitare qualsiasi corridore, anche se uno di loro gli è passato sopra alla sua Honda e su di lui.
Vlaanderen tornerà a casa in Olanda per cercare di recuperare il pieno allenamento in vista del MXGP della Turchia, che prenderà il via sabato (1 settembre) al nuovissimo Afyon Motor Sports Center.

Sfortunatamente, non potevo fare nulla per evitare Ben quando si è schiantato di fronte a me, così sono finito a terra anch’io. Il resto bene, è quello che tutti hanno visto in TV. Ho provato ad andare in pista per la seconda gara, ma dopo il giro di allineamento mi sono reso conto che non ero in condizioni di correre, quindi ho optato per saltare la gara; ora userò tutto il poco tempo a disposizione per recuperare il più possibile per essere pronto per la Turchia. Vorrei ringraziare la squadra per il loro ottimo lavoro: questo fine settimana è stato davvero poco gentile con noi, ma speriamo di poter cambiare le cose in meno di una settimana.

È un peccato che Calvin non abbia avuto la possibilità di lottare per un buon risultato qui in Bulgaria, perché ha avuto la velocità di fare bene. Ovviamente, siamo contenti che lui sia più o meno OK – sì, è malconcio e contuso, ma tutte le ossa sembrano essere a posto – ma comprendiamo la decisione di non gareggiare in gara 2 se sentisse di non essere nella condizione giusta per continuare. Spero che sarà in forma per la Turchia, in modo che possiamo riprendere la battaglia.

Calvin Vlaanderen’s race-day performance at Sevlievo was cut short by a crash he suffered on the third lap of the first moto, when the 22-year-old from Cape Town fell off his Honda CRF250RW while trying to avoid Ben Watson who tumbled in front of him. Despite making his way back to the track for race two, the standard bearer of Team HRC in the category decided to pull out at the end of the sighting lap as the pain and discomfort were too strong to compete.
The race one crash left Vlaanderen battered and bruised all over the upper body, with the right-upper leg being the most hurt as it got stuck under the bike. Calvin did everything in his power to get himself out of the way to avoid any upcoming rider – although one of them rode over his Honda and partly over him.
Vlaanderen will now return home to the Netherlands to try and recover the full fitness ahead of the MXGP of Turkey, which will get underway this Saturday (1 September) at the brand-new Afyon Motor Sports Center.

Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do to avoid Ben when he crashed in front of me, so I ended up on the ground, too. The rest well, it’s what everyone saw on TV. I tried to get on track for race two but after the sighting lap I realised I was in no condition to race so I opted to sit out the moto; now I will use all the little time available to recover as much as possible in order to be ready for Turkey. I would like to thank the team for their great job: this weekend was really unkind to us, but hopefully we can turn things around in less than a week.

It’s a shame that Calvin did not have the chance to fight for a good result here in Bulgaria, because he had the speed to do well. Obviously, we are glad he’s more or less OK – yes, he is battered and bruised, but all bones seem to be in place – but we understand the decision not to compete in race two if he felt he was not in the right condition to perform. Hopefully he’ll be fit for Turkey, so that we can resume battle.
