Nagl e Seewer danno credito a “impressionanti” Herlings
Il 2018 è stato (Ovviamente non è ancora finito…..n.d.r.) certamente l’anno di Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM, sia in termini di risultati, sia di velocità e dello strano momento drammatico. Le 11 vittorie dell’olandese di 14 (8 con 1-1 come risultati) hanno stabilito un nuovo livello di prestazioni nella classe MXGP e hanno suscitato elogi e ammirazione da parte di appassionati e colleghi.
Per i piloti come Jeremy Seewer di Wilvo Yamaha – che ha assaggiato l’effetto dominante di Herlings in MX2 nel 2014-2016 – il modo in cui Herlings è stato in grado di imporre un nuovo grado di intensità e velocità nella classe regina è stato notevole. Il caso dell’olandese ha anche dato speranza agli altri atleti che partecipano alla competizione con un infortunio alla mano e la sottovalutare le richieste della MXGP ha creato problemi all’attuale leader del campionato all’inizio del 2017.
“Sono impressionato da quello che sta facendo, sapendo quanto sia difficile correre su un 450 a questo livello”, afferma Seewer. “La cosa bella da vedere è che ha faticato un bel po ‘all’inizio dell’anno scorso, quindi anche un ragazzo come Jeffrey Herlings ha bisogno di tempo per adattarsi alla classe ed alla moto ed è quello che sto cercando di fare al momento. Non sto dicendo che sarò un ‘Jeffrey Herlings’ il prossimo anno, ma ho intenzione di ricostruire da dove sono al momento. “
Una figura più esperta, Max Nagl di TM Racing, è in grado di apprezzare il modo in cui Herlings ha modellato la KTM 450 SX-F a suo piacimento e ha anche affinato i suoi punti deboli per diventare un pacchetto completo.
“Ce l’ha del tutto”, ha commentato il tedesco al Gran Premio di Francia e prima del “blip” minore di Herlings con un intervento chirurgico alla clavicola. “Sta avendo” quei momenti “in cui tutto ciò che fai funziona. Ad esempio prendere una linea rovinata o una via che non funzionerebbe; sta funzionando per lui. Sembra così bello. La moto si adatta perfettamente a lui, fa un sacco di allenamento e ha la forza fisica per la 450. Ha avuto qualche problema con le partenze in passato ma ci hanno lavorato e lui è sempre lassù “.
Herlings ha rimbalzato enfaticamente dalla sua rottura della clavicola per vincere i successivi tre round e sembra essere sulla buona strada per la storia se il destino non interviene. Quando viene domandato su come lui e gli altri piloti MXGP possono tentare di raggiungere la sfera operativa di KTM, Nagl, che ha sede in Belgio vicino alla residenza di Herlings, ha commentato con un sorriso: “Vorrei saperlo! E lo vedo quasi tutti i giorni! “

Nagl and Seewer credit “impressive” Herlings
2018 has certainly been the year of Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings, both in terms of results, speed and the odd moment of drama. The Dutchman’s 11 wins from 14 (8 with 1-1 moto scores) has set a new level of performance in the MXGP class and has drawn praise and admiration from fans and peers.
For riders like Wilvo Yamaha’s Jeremy Seewer – who sampled Herlings dominant effect while in MX2 in 2014-2016 – the way Herlings has been able to impose a fresh degree of intensity and speed in the premier class has been remarkable. The Dutchman’s case has also given hope for other athletes coming into the competition as a hand injury and underestimation of the demands of MXGP created problems for the current championship leader at the beginning of 2017.
“I’m impressed by what he is doing, knowing how tough it is to race a 450 on this level,” Seewer says. “The nice thing to see is that he struggled quite a bit at the beginning of last year, so even a guy like Jeffrey Herlings needs some time to adapt to the class and the bike and that’s what I am trying to do at the moment. I am not saying I will be a ‘Jeffrey Herlings’ next year but I am planning to build-up on where I am at the minute.”
A more experienced figure, TM Racing’s Max Nagl, is also able to appreciate the way Herlings has moulded the KTM 450 SX-F to his liking and also refined his weak points to become the complete package. “He has it altogether,” the German opined at the French Grand Prix and prior to Herlings’ minor ‘blip’ with collarbone surgery. “He is having ‘those moments’ where everything that you do just works. For example taking a line that’s broken or would not work; it’s working for him. He looks so good. The bike fits perfectly for him, he does a lot of training and he has the physical power for the 450. He had some issues with the start in the past but they worked on it and he’s always up there.”
Herlings bounced back emphatically from his collarbone break to win the next three rounds and seems to be on course for more history if fate doesn’t intervene. When quizzed about how he and other MXGP riders can try and reach the KTM man’s sphere of operation Nagl, who is based in Belgium and close to Herlings’ residence, cracked a smile: “I wish I knew! And I see him most days!”
