Herlings: “Jonass è alla ricerca del campionato quest’anno”
Pauls Jonass della Red Bull KTM ha ricevuto il voto di fiducia dal compagno di squadra e padrone della categoria MX2, Jeffrey Herlings, nel suo tentativo di essere il terzo campione mondiale del produttore da quando la categoria è stata creata nel 2004. Jonass, 21 anni, ha collezionato una perfetta tabella di marcia nei punti dopo tre turni e sei manche del 2018 e detiene un vantaggio di 30 punti su Thomas Kjer Olsen per la pausa di Pasqua.
“Sta guardando bene per vincere il campionato quest’anno”, ha commentato Herlings, che ha vinto oltre 60 Gran Premi in sei anni con la 250 SX-F. “Lo vedo ogni settimana e sembra davvero forte. Jonass potrebbe essere acclamato con la sua forma e le sue prestazioni senza errori fino ad ora, ma ha confessato che la corsa di sei vittorie in moto stava iniziando a richiamare un altro tipo di attenzione: quanto durerà la striscia?
“Di sicuro porta una pressione extra e ogni volta che succede la gente pensa che stai guidando bene e non hai bisogno di allenarti, ma la verità è che devi allenarti ancora di più!”, Ha spiegato. “La gente si aspetta che vinca … e anch’io lo voglio. Non vedo l’ora che arrivi ogni fine settimana e sto lavorando duramente per continuare sul1-1 “.
Il lettone ha anche parlato del possibile vantaggio mentale di essere così prolifico fin dall’inizio. “Ricordo che ho corso con Jeffrey e entravi al cancello sapendo che lui credeva di averti già battuto. Herlings: “Jonass is looking good for the championship this year”
Red Bull KTM’s Pauls Jonass has received a vote of confidence from teammate and master of the MX2 category, Jeffrey Herlings, in his bid to be the manufacturer’s third double world champion since the category was created in 2004. 21 year old Jonass has racked-up a perfect scorecard after three rounds and six motos of the 2018 contest and holds a 30 point advantage over Thomas Kjer Olsen heading into the Easter break.
“He is looking good to win the championship this year,” opined Herlings, who won more than 60 Grands Prix in six years on the 250 SX-F. “I see him every week and he looks really strong. Mentally he doesn’t care about anything and just thinks ‘I’m the guy’. It is nice to see. He also stays very normal and human and doesn’t start ‘flying’ [with his success].”
Jonass may be drawing acclaim with his form and fault-free performances so far but confessed that the six moto run of victory was starting to draw another kind of attention: how long will the run last? “For sure it brings extra pressure and each time it happens people think you are riding good and you don’t need to practice but the truth is that you need to practice even more!” he explained. “People are expecting me to win…and I also want that. I am looking forward to every weekend at the moment and I am working hard to keep going 1-1.”
The Latvian also talked about the possible mental advantage of being so prolific from the outset. “I can remember racing Jeffrey and you went into the gate knowing that he believed he had already beaten you. I know the others will be doing their best to beat me but maybe they are also wondering about that.”
Jonass is quick to credit the atmosphere of collaboration in the Red Bull KTM set-up and also his work off the track with Harry Everts for the train of results. “I am thankful to have Harry by my side and he is pushing and slowing me when I need it. There is a real family atmosphere in the team at the moment. It is really good and I’m really happy.”
When mentioned in the same sentence as Herlings Jonass simply smiled and said: “It is nice to be compared to the ‘King’ of MX2.”
