Herlings: “la moto sta andando alla grande”
Il secondo classificato della MXGP, Jeffrey Herlings, si sta scaldando benissimo con la sua impostazione come uno dei nomi più forti per la competizione per il titolo quest’anno con il turno di apertura del primo dei diciannove GP in Argentina a meno di una settimane di distanza. Il pilota della Red Bull KTM ha conquistato vittorie brillanti ad Hawkstone Park e Lacapelle-marival Internationals nel Regno Unito e in Francia nei fine settimana passati e ha completato una felice preparazione pre-campionato che è andata in totale contrasto con il dramma del 2017, quando il tre volte campione del mondo MX2 si è rotto la mano destra pochi giorni prima del primo Gran Premio in Qatar.
In modo minaccioso per i suoi rivali, Herlings – che ha vinto cinque degli ultimi sei round nel 2017 – sembra aver affinato ulteriormente il suo feeling e la sinergia con la 450 SX-F. Il 23enne cantava del suo potenziale con la moto dopo la sua rotta a Lacapelle, domenica scorsa. “La moto sta andando alla grande, quindi devo ringraziare la KTM per tutto il lavoro che hanno fatto per me”, ha dichiarato in esclusiva. “Com’è ora è meglio di quella che abbiamo avuto l’anno scorso, quindi il ‘miglior lavoro’ dei ragazzi in Austria. Mi sento davvero a mio agio e non vedo l’ora che inizi la stagione “.
Il clamore di un duello inter-KTM tra Herlings (23) e Cairoli (32) incombente campione non è diminuito o attenuato come conseguenza delle poche gare che si sono verificate dall’alba del nuovo anno. L’unico incontro tra i due si concluse in pochi secondi quando Herlings cadde alla prima curva degli Internazionali d’Italia in Sardegna e fu fortunato scampandola a più problemi fisici; Herlings si ritirò dal resto dell’evento mentre Cairoli prendeva il primo trionfo. Il siciliano ha affrontato la breve opposizione di Monster Energy Yamaha, Romain Febvre, sul suolo di casa una settimana dopo, ma ha chiuso con la sua decima corona nazionale senza scrupoli a Mantova. Herlings spazzò le sue rispettive gare dall’altra parte del continente. La coppia ha guidato insieme solo una volta ed è apparso in gruppo per il servizio fotografico KTM in Sardegna.
Herlings non è stato il terzo ‘rookie’ MXGP consecutivo a dominare la classe nel 2017, ma il suo secondo posto e la sua innegabile forma nella seconda metà della campagna hanno chiaramente snaturato il suo potenziale per il 18°. Il match-up con Cairoli sta raccogliendo interesse. Il #222 non ha avuto uno scontro con un altro pilota che lo ha spinto in un confronto diretto come Ryan Villopoto, ovviamente, dal passaggio sorprendente e alla fine condannato ai Grand Prix nel 2015.
Finora sono emerse solo vibrazioni positive dall’accampamento della tenda Red Bull, e nel terreno morbido e unico di Neuquen – dove Herlings ha vinto solo nel 2016 (è stato colpito nel primo giro della prima manche da Pauls Jonass nel 2015 ed è stato inadatto nel 2017) – è difficile immaginare uno sfidante più duro per il campione in carica.

Herlings: “the bike is running awesome”
MXGP runner-up Jeffrey Herlings is warming nicely to his billing as one of the strongest names for title contention this year with the 2018 MXGP opening round of nineteen in Argentina less than two weeks away. The Red Bull KTM rider claimed clear-cut victories at the Hawkstone Park and Lacapelle-marival Internationals in the UK and France in successive weekends and completed a happy pre-season prep that flew in complete contrast to the injury drama of 2017 when the former three times MX2 world champ broke his right hand only days prior to the first Grand Prix in Qatar.
Ominously for his rivals, Herlings – who won five of the last six rounds in 2017 – seems to have refined his feeling and synergy with the works 450 SX-F even further. The 23 year old was singing about his potential with the bike after his rout at Lacapelle last Sunday. “The bike is running awesome so I have to give-it-up to KTM and all the work they have done for me,” he said exclusively. “How is it now is better than what we had last year so ‘top job’ by the guys in Austria. I feel really comfortable and I cannot wait for the season to start.”
The hype of an inter-KTM duel between Herlings (23) and champion-incumbent Cairoli (32) has not waned or dimmed as a consequence of the few races that have occurred since the dawn of the new year. The sole fixture clash between the two was over in a matter of seconds as Herlings fell on the first corner of the Internazionali d’Italia in Sardinia and was fortunate to escape more physical problems; Herlings withdrew from the rest of the event as Cairoli took a maiden triumph. The Sicilian faced brief opposition from Monster Energy Yamaha’s Romain Febvre on home soil a week later but wrapped his tenth national crown without qualms at Mantova. Herlings swept his respective outings on the other side of the continent. The pair have only ridden together once and appeared as a group for the KTM photoshoot in Sardinia.
Herlings missed out on being the third consecutive MXGP ‘rookie’ in a row to rule the class in 2017 but his second place and undeniable form in the latter half of the campaign clearly roadmapped his potential for ’18. The match-up with Cairoli is gathering heat. #222 has not been pushed up against another rider so obviously since Ryan Villopoto’s surprising and ultimately doomed transition to Grand Prix in 2015.
So far only positive vibes have emerged from #84’s camp and side of the Red Bull awning, and in the soft and unique terrain of Neuquen – where Herlings won in 2016 (he was hit out on the first lap of the first moto by Pauls Jonass in 2015 and was unfit in 2017) – it is hard to imagine a tougher challenger for the defending champion.
