Julien Lieber si unirà al suo compagno belga Clement Desalle nel team Kawasaki Racing di Monster Energy, quando si trasferirà nella MXGP la prossima stagione FIM Motocross World Championship.
Lieber ha avuto un grande weekend nel suo GP di casa a Lommel lo scorso fine settimana; Ha preso il suo quinto podio MX2 della stagione, è stato scelto come membro della squadra belga per il prossimo Motocross delle Nazioni e ha firmato un contratto per correre nella factory Kawasaki KX450-SR la prossima stagione! È stato il momento principale di una splendida stagione durante la quale ha fatto un ritorno sensazionale come un privato nella serie MX2 dopo un anno completo fuori azione.
Già considerata una delle promesse più promettenti del Belgio dopo essersi classificato sesto nel Campionato del Mondo 2015 e in piedi sul podio con il Team Belgio al MX delle Nazioni, Julien ha trascorso l’anno scorso in numerosi ospedali e centri di recupero dopo l’intervento chirurgico a entrambi i fianchi. Tornato su una moto questa stagione ha sorpreso molte persone quando ha preso la tabella rossa come leader della serie MX2 in Indonesia, e poi ha confermato che è tornato alla sua forma migliore con cinque podi finora. Corre quest’anno nella sua squadra privata, Julien, che ha 23 anni da giugno, ha già un’esperienza 450, quando è entrato nella serie di beach francese in questa classe cinque anni fa; Si aggiudicherà la prossima stagione insieme a Clement Desalle e inizierà a lavorare con la squadra subito dopo il Motocross delle Nazioni nel mese di ottobre.
Julien Lieber: “Tornando a correre in questa stagione, uno dei miei obiettivi è stato quello di ottenere un posto in testa per la classe MXGP e sono felice di averlo raggiunto. Associarsi alla classe principale con un team di professionisti è un sogno e sicuramente farò del mio meglio per ottenere risultati forti. C’erano molti piloti in MXGP, ma ho già girato su un 450 anni fa e penso che questa classe soddisferà il mio stile di guida; Ho guidato un 250 per sette anni, quindi è davvero il momento giusto per salire e non puoi farlo in un team più professionale di quello di Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team. Sono anche felice di essere compagno di squadra con Clément; Abbiamo già un buon rapporto e sono sicuro che lavoreremo a stretto contatto “.
Steve Guttridge: “Sono contento di vedere che Julien si unisce a noi; Ci sono molti giovani piloti provenienti dalla MX2 e sarà molto interessante. Julien ha un sacco di talento, corre molto bene e sono sicuro che si adatterà alla 450 davvero bene. Penso che i nostri due ragazzi lavoreranno bene in allenamento e questo è importante per l’ambiente del team; È una lunga stagione, ognuno deve lavorare insieme per lo stesso obiettivo e penso che con questi due ragazzi abbiamo una buona combinazione. Vogliamo andare per il titolo la prossima stagione; Sappiamo tutti che Clement è più che capace. È così professionale e può essere sul podio ogni fine settimana e questo è il modo per vincere questo campionato. La squadra è così professionale ora. Abbiamo notato Julien questa stagione, tornando forte dopo una stagione di corse a causa di un intervento chirurgico; Ha fatto enormi progressi con Yves (Demaria) al suo fianco e siamo felici di farlo entrare nella squadra per la classe MXGP. Lavoreremo a stretto contatto con lui in modo che possa adattarsi bene al 450, e sicuramente Clement lo aiuterà anche. Julien Lieber will join fellow Belgian Clement Desalle in the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team when he moves to the MXGP premier class of the FIM Motocross World Championship next season.
Lieber had a great weekend in his home GP at Lommel last weekend; he claimed his fifth MX2 podium of the season, was selected as a member of the Belgian team for the upcoming Motocross of Nations and signed a contract to race the factory Kawasaki KX450-SR next season! It was the main highlight so far of a wonderful season during which he has made a sensational comeback as a privateer in the MX2 series after one complete year out of action.
Already considered one of the most promising Belgian hopefuls after ranking sixth in the 2015 World Championship and standing on the podium with Team Belgium at the MX of Nations, Julien spent last year in numerous hospitals and recuperation centres after surgery to both hips. Back on a bike this season he surprised many people when he took the red plate as MX2 series leader in Indonesia, and later confirmed that he was back to his best form with five podiums so far. Racing this year in his own private team, Julien who turned 23 years old in June, already has some experience of the 450 as he entered the French beach series in this class five years ago; he will line up next season alongside Clement Desalle, and will start working with the team immediately after the Motocross of Nations in October.
Julien Lieber: “Coming back to racing this season, one of my goals was to get a top ride for the MXGP class, and I’m so happy to have achieved that. Joining the main class with such a professional team is like a dream, and for sure I will do my best to get strong results. There’s a lot of top riders in the MXGP but I already trained and raced on a 450 a couple of years ago and I think that this class will suit my riding style; I’ve ridden a 250 for seven years now, so it really is the right moment to move up and you can’t do it in a more professional team than the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team. I’m also happy to be teammate with Clément; we already have a good relationship and I’m sure we’ll work closely together.”
Steve Guttridge: “I’m glad to see Julien joining us; there are a lot of young riders coming from MX2 and it will be very interesting. Julien has a lot of talent on a bike, rides really well and I’m sure he will move to the 450 really well. I think that our two guys will work well together in training and that’s important for the team ambiance; it’s a long season, everyone has to work together for the same goal and I think with these two guys we have a good combination. We want to go for the title next season; we all know that Clement is more than capable of that. He is so professional and can be on the podium every weekend and that’s the way to win this championship. The team is so professional now. They have a bunch of guys all working in harmony for the same goal; the riders trust in what they say during testing and the build up to the race weekend. The set-up is perfect and then it’s up to the riders to do the job during the weekend.”
Thierry Chizat Suzzoni: “First of all I want to thank Jordi Tixier for his commitment across these two seasons with us. We noticed Julien this season, coming back strongly after one season out of racing due to surgery; he made huge progress with Yves (Demaria) at his side and we’re happy to have him join the team in the MXGP class. We will work closely with him so he can adapt well to the 450, and for sure Clement will also help him. Clement knows the bike and the team perfectly; he worked hard last winter with the team to develop the bike even further and now he is very confident when he’s on his bike and has been getting strong results every weekend. We’re already working for 2018, and as soon as Julien joins us we will start testing with him.”
Lommel marks return to form for Lieber who is quiet on MXGP future
The Grand Prix of Belgium was a positive weekend for privateer Julien Lieber who bounced back from some difficult Grands Prix in Italy and Portugal to again mount the MX2 podium in third place and was confirmed as the MX2 entrant next to Clement Desalle and Jeremy Van Horebeek for Team Belgium at the 2017 Motocross of Nations at Matterley Basin in the UK on October 1st.
The LRT rider grabbed his fifth set of silverware at Lommel to emerge as the third most successful racer in the class this year and sits fifth in the championship standings. The Belgian revealed that the effort to return from his hip surgery in 2016 was behind the malaise in the heat of Ottobiano and Agueda where he placed 6th and 14th. “I started riding really early last year and didn’t have any break since July 2016, and I felt that in the GPs in Ottobiano and Portugal,” he admitted. “I had to recover from that and take some time but since Loket I have been better and hopefully can continue in the last few races in good shape.”
Lieber has benefitted from the guidance of Yves Demaria in 2017 and from within the confines of his own race team. The run of good results has re-established the prospects of the talented but previously injury-prone athlete, and as one of the riders that has to leave MX2 at the end of the season due to his age Lieber has been linked to the few MXGP options that are floating around the paddock. Heavy rumours in the last couple of weeks have #33 connected with Kawasaki Racing Team for 2018 but he was in no position to comment at Lommel. “I cannot give you an answer on that yet but it will be clear soon,” was all he could offer.
Lieber has previously ridden factory Suzuki and Yamaha machinery in the MX2 division.
