Con i titoli in palio, il WSX Abu Dhabi GP cala il sipario su un’incredibile stagione di gare di supercross e, per il secondo anno consecutivo, l’Etihad Arena ospita quelle importantissime ultime quattro gare di azione SX2.

Free Practice

Per il WSX Abu Dhabi GP, CDR Yamaha Supported by Star Racing ha presentato una formazione di piloti SX2 rivista con Phillip Nicoletti che ha sostituito l’infortunato Kaleb Barham.

È stato Cullin Park della MotoConcepts Racing a partire veloce all’Etihad Arena con un giro più veloce di 41.229, battendo l’onnipresente Shane McElrath per il miglior tempo di un soffio. Enzo Lopes ha continuato la sua forma costante per arrivare terzo più veloce, mentre Cole Thompson e Derek Kelley hanno completato la top five.

Practice

McElrath ha alzato il tiro nella seconda sessione di prove, con tempi che sono precipitati nella fascia dei 39 secondi, ma Lopes gli è stato alle calcagna, a soli due centesimi di distanza. Thompson è stato il terzo più veloce, mentre Park, il battistrada delle prove libere, è sceso al quarto posto e Brice Maylin è balzato dal 14° posto nella prima sessione per completare la top five.

Qualifying

Proprio come nel Round 3, Thompson della Fire Power Honda è stato il pilota più veloce in qualifica, stabilendo un tempo di riferimento di 40.381. Sia McElrath che Lopes erano indietro di meno di due decimi, rispettivamente al secondo e terzo posto, mentre Park si è mantenuto in testa al quarto posto.

Dopo essersi assicurati i primi quattro posti, Thompson, McElrath, Lopes e Park hanno conquistato i loro posti in SuperPole. Con cinque punti extra per il campionato del mondo in classifica e il ritiro del cancello in palio, i piloti daranno il massimo in SuperPole.

Abu Dhabi GP SX2 SuperPole Qualifiers

Park è stato il primo a stabilire un tempo nella SX2 SuperPole e ha stabilito un punto di riferimento di 40.617. Lopes lo ha seguito rapidamente e ha superato il tempo di Park di sei decimi con un 40.090.

Il successivo è stato McElrath che ha imposto la sua autorità sulla classe SX2 andando a un gigantesco vantaggio di otto decimi su un 39.237, ottenendo la sua terza vittoria SuperPole dell’anno. Thompson è stato l’ultimo a stabilire un tempo e si è piazzato al secondo posto.

SX2 GP Race 01

Con una corsa ultra-breve fino alla curva 1, le partenze sarebbero state vitali all’Etihad Arena. Park è stato quello che ha ottenuto l’holeshot nel primo gate drop della serata, ma McElrath gli ha rapidamente strappato il comando al primo giro.

Il duo Rick Ware Racing formato da Schock e Lopes si è piazzato rispettivamente terzo e quarto, ma un errore del brasiliano al secondo giro ha aperto le porte a Thompson per prendere la posizione.

Nel penultimo giro, Lopes si è lanciato all’interno per provare a riprendersi il quarto posto da Thompson, ma non ci è riuscito.

Alla bandiera, il vantaggio di McElrath era di poco inferiore ai quattro secondi, mentre conquistava un’altra vittoria nel 2024, mentre Park ha iniziato bene la sua serata in seconda posizione e Schock è arrivato terzo.

SX2 GP Race 02

McElrath ha ottenuto l’holeshot per Gara 2 con Lopes e Desprey all’inseguimento. Un tamponamento alla curva 1 ha messo fuori gioco tre piloti, tra cui Schock.

Lopes è poi caduto al giro 2 in discesa, che ha portato Desprey al secondo posto e Thompson al terzo.

Il pilota brasiliano era in rimonta, tagliando il gruppo fino al quarto posto. Thompson era solo un posto davanti al terzo e il pilota francese Desprey ha impressionato con il secondo.

Ancora una volta, McElrath è andato in testa senza rivali e ha vinto la sua seconda gara della serata in grande stile. Ciò è stato sufficiente al pilota americano per aggiudicarsi il campionato SX2 2024 e il suo secondo titolo nella categoria.

McElrath ha ottenuto l’holeshot nell’ultimo gate drop SX2 GP del 2024, con Thompson e Desprey subito dietro. Park e Lopes si sono aggrovigliati in un altro incidente alla curva 1, finendo proprio in fondo al gruppo.

Subito dopo la metà del percorso, Desprey ha tagliato abilmente sotto Thompson per il secondo posto e ha iniziato a erodere il vantaggio di McElrath. Non è riuscito a chiudere proprio dietro la Fire Power Honda, lasciando McElrath a conquistare la sua terza vittoria della serata davanti al sempre impressionante Desprey e Thompson.

SuperFinal

Con Eli Tomac che ha preso l’holeshot generale, McElrath si è piazzato terzo assoluto (ma soprattutto primo in SX2) davanti a Ken Roczen, mentre Schock si è assicurato il secondo posto di classe e Thompson il terzo.

Sebbene McElrath abbia ceduto il terzo posto assoluto a Roczen al secondo giro, ha mantenuto il comando in SX2. Un vantaggio che ha mantenuto fino all’ultima bandiera a scacchi per completare una vittoria netta 1-1-1-1 del WSX Abu Dhabi GP. Un modo appropriato per concludere la sua campagna vincente.

Un’impennata tardiva di Lopes ha strappato il terzo posto a Thompson mentre Schock è arrivato secondo.

After three high-octane rounds in Vancouver and Perth, the FIM World Supercross Championship’s SX2 class arrived at the Etihad Arena for the season finale WSX Abu Dhabi GP. Check out all the latest results below.

With titles on the line, the WSX Abu Dhabi GP brings the curtain down on an incredible season of supercross racing, and for the second year in a row, Etihad Arena plays host to those all-important final four races of SX2 action.

Free Practice

For the WSX Abu Dhabi GP, CDR Yamaha Supported by Star Racing featured a revised SX2 rider line-up as Phillip Nicoletti replaced the injured Kaleb Barham.

It was MotoConcepts Racing’s Cullin Park who was quick out of the blocks at Etihad Arena with a fastest lap 41.229, beating the ever-present Shane McElrath to the top time by the merest of margins. Enzo Lopes continued his consistent form to go third quickest, while Cole Thompson and Derek Kelley rounded out the top five.

Practice

McElrath turned up the heat in the second practice session as times tumbled into the 39-second bracket, but Lopes was hot on his heels just two hundredths behind. Thompson was third fastest while Free Practice pacesetter Park dropped to fourth and Brice Maylin vaulted from 14th in the first session to complete the top five.

Qualifying

Just as he had in Round 3, Fire Power Honda’s Thompson was the fastest rider in qualifying setting a benchmark time of a 40.381. Both McElrath and Lopes were less than two tenths back in second and third respectively, while Park kept himself at the sharp end in fourth.

Having secured the top four places, Thompson, McElrath, Lopes and Park claimed their spots in SuperPole. With five extra World Championship points on the table and the gate pick up for grabs, the riders will be giving it everything in SuperPole.

Abu Dhabi GP SX2 SuperPole Qualifiers

Park was first to set a time in SX2 SuperPole and set a benchmark of 40.617. Lopes quickly followed and bested Park’s time by six tenths with a 40.090.

Next up was McElrath who stamped his authority on the SX2 class by going a mammoth eight tenths clear on a 39.237, taking his third SuperPole win of the year. Thompson was last to set a time and slotted into second.

SX2 GP Race 01

With an ultra-short run to Turn 1, starts were going to be vital at Etihad Arena. It was Park who got the holeshot in the first gate drop of the night, but McElrath quickly seized the lead from him on the first lap.

The Rick Ware Racing duo of Schock and Lopes slotted into third and fourth respectively, but a mistake for the Brazilian on Lap 2 opened the door for Thompson to take the position.

On the penultimate tour, Lopes lunged to the inside to try and take back fourth from Thompson, but couldn’t get the job done.

At the flag, McElrath’s advantage was just shy of four seconds as he took yet another victory in 2024, while Park kicked his night off well in second and Schock took third.

SX2 GP Race 02

McElrath got the holeshot for Race 2 with Lopes and Desprey in hot pursuit. A pile-up at Turn 1 took three riders out of contention with Schock among them.

Lopes then went down on Lap 2 dropping down the order, which elevated Desprey throguh to second and Thompson up to third.

The Brazilian rider was on a comeback charge though, slicing through the field back to fourth at the flag. Thompson was just one spot ahead in third and French rider Desprey impressed with second.

Once again, McElrath went unchallenged at the front and won his second race of the night in superb style. That was enough for the American rider to clinch the 2024 SX2 Championship and his second title in the category.

SX2 GP Race 03

McElrath got the holeshot in the final SX2 GP gate drop of 2024, with Thompson and Desprey close behind. Park and Lopes got tangled up in yet another Turn 1 incident, dropping right to the back of the pack.

Just after the halfway point, Desprey deftly cut underneath Thompson for second and began chipping away at McElrath’s advantage. He was unable to close right up to the back of the Fire Power Honda though, leaving McElrath to to take his third win of the night ahead of the ever-impressive Desprey and Thompson.

SuperFinal

With Eli Tomac taking the overall holeshot, McElrath slotted into third overall (but crucially first in SX2) ahead of Ken Roczen, while Schock secured second in class and Thompson third.

Although McElrath conceded third overall to Roczen on Lap 2, he maintained the lead in SX2. An advantage he held until the final chequered flag to complete a 1-1-1-1 clean sweep of the WSX Abu Dhabi GP. A fitting way to sign off his title-winning campaign.

A late surge from Lopes claimed third from Thompson while Schock came home second.
