Due team hanno rivisto le formazioni dei piloti WSX per l’Abu Dhabi GP 2024, con Thomas Ramette che ha sostituito l’infortunato Colt Nichols alla PMG, mentre il super-sub della Fire Power Honda Aaron Tanti ha preso le redini per Dean Wilson.

Quando i piloti sono scesi in pista per la finale di stagione, è stato Greg Aranda a staccare di sette decimi la vetta della classifica, eguagliando il suo incredibile ritmo sul giro singolo nelle prove e nelle qualifiche dell’ultima volta a Perth.

Da non sottovalutare così presto in un evento, Eli Tomac era in agguato dietro al secondo posto davanti a Mitchell Oldenburg, Joey Savatgy e Ryan Breece. Nel frattempo, il campione in carica Ken Roczen ha rivissuto le sue difficoltà negli allenamenti di Perth, languindo al nono posto.

Roczen è stato un uomo in missione nella seconda sessione, stabilendo un tempo di 39.331, riprendendosi dalla sua prima sessione di prove travagliata per andare più veloce davanti ad Aranda e Savatgy, mentre metteva anche sette decimi di aria fresca tra sé e Tomac.

Qualifying

Con 10 minuti di giri di qualifica ad alta intensità nei libri, un tempo sul giro da record e un nome familiare sono emersi in cima alle classifiche.

Tomac ha dimostrato esattamente perché è in testa alla classifica arrivando all’evento di Abu Dhabi, con quasi quattro decimi di vantaggio ed è stato l’unico a tuffarsi in un giro da 38 secondi. Aranda ha continuato la sua forma accattivante al secondo posto, mentre Roczen e Savatgy sono stati separati da soli sei millesimi al terzo e quarto posto.

Lo stesso quartetto SuperPole del Round 3 si è assicurato i posti per il Round 4 e si scontrerà testa a testa per altri cinque punti del campionato del mondo, così come l’ambita scelta del gate.

Il vincitore del WSX Abu Dhabi GP 2023 Savatgy ha dato il via alla SuperPole stabilendo un marcatore di 38.882. Roczen è stato il successivo e ha superato Savatgy di due decimi con un 38.664.

Aranda stava spingendo al limite nel suo giro ed è caduto prima di riuscire a stabilire un tempo, rassegnandosi al quarto posto.

Con altri cinque punti di campionato e il gate pick nel mirino, Tomac ha provato a mettere due decimi tra sé e Roczen con un 38.420.

La corsa ultra-breve dell’Etihad Arena verso il traguardo e il layout tecnico hanno posto un’enfasi considerevole sul gate drop. È stato Vince Friese a ottenere l’holeshot seguito da Savatgy e Roczen, con Tomac, aspirante al campionato, sesto.

Al terzo giro, Roczen, Savatgy e Friese sono venuti alle mani con il campione in carica che ha tentato un ambizioso doppio sorpasso, ma è finito per sbattere contro il lato di Friesse e cadere al quinto posto. Ciò ha permesso a Savatgy di prendere il primo posto.

Per la seconda volta in due gare, Savatgy è uscito di testa spingendo Roczen al posto di guida in prima posizione, con Tomac e Friese all’inseguimento.

L’ultima partenza WSX GP dell’anno ha visto Roczen e Savatgy affiancarsi per la testa alla curva 1. Alla curva 2, il campione in carica era in vantaggio, mentre Tomac si è piazzato terzo subito dietro Savatgy.

I primi tre hanno corso in fila per i primi giri, ma i distacchi hanno iniziato a ridursi man mano che superavano il punto di metà strada e con essi la tensione ha iniziato a salire.

Stavano tutti spingendo forte e nel penultimo giro Savatgy ha commesso il suo terzo errore non forzato della serata, perdendo una posizione rispetto a Tomac. Roczen si è assicurato la sua seconda vittoria in gara dell’evento e, così facendo, ha ritardato il secondo classificato Tomac dal conquistare il titolo fino alla SuperFinal. Un Savatgy abbattuto è arrivato terzo.

Tomac ha ottenuto l’ultimo holeshot del 2024 con Savatgy che si è piazzato secondo, il neo-campione SX2 McElrath terzo e Roczen quarto.

Al secondo giro, Roczen ha superato McElrath attraverso le whoops per passare al terzo posto assoluto e ha iniziato a dare la caccia a Savatgy. Al settimo giro, Roczen era alle sue calcagna e ancora una volta ha utilizzato una corsa superiore attraverso le whoops per prendere il secondo posto da Savatgy.

Calmo e composto in testa, Tomac ha aperto un distacco di quattro secondi da Roczen. Free Practice

Two teams had revised WSX rider line-ups for the 2024 Abu Dhabi GP, with Thomas Ramette filling in for the injured Colt Nichols at PMG, while Fire Power Honda super-sub Aaron Tanti took the reins for Dean Wilson.

When riders hit the track for the season finale, it was Greg Aranda who streaked seven tenths clear at the top of the timesheets, matching his blistering one-lap pace from practice and qualifying last time out in Perth.

Not to be overlooked so early in an event, Eli Tomac was lurking behind in second ahead of Mitchell Oldenburg, Joey Savatgy and Ryan Breece. Reigning champion Ken Roczen, meanwhile, relived his Perth practice struggles languishing in ninth.

Practice

Roczen was a man on a mission in the second session setting a time of 39.331, recovering from his troubled first practice to go fastest ahead of Aranda and Savatgy, while also putting seven tenths of fresh air between himself and Tomac.

Qualifying

With 10 minutes of high intensity qualifying laps in the books, a statement lap time and a familiar name emerged at the top of the timesheets.

Tomac showed exactly why he leads the standings coming into the Abu Dhabi event, by going almost four tenths clear and the only one to dip into a 38-second lap. Aranda continued his eye-catching form in second, while Roczen and Savatgy were separated by just six thousandths in third and fourth.

The same SuperPole quartet as in Round 3 secured their spots for Round 4, and will go head-to-head for five additional World Championship points, as well as the sought-after gate pick.

2023 WSX Abu Dhabi GP winner Savatgy kicked off SuperPole by laying down a marker of a 38.882. Roczen was next up and went two tenths clear of Savatgy with a 38.664.

Aranda was pushing the limits on his lap and crashed out before he was able to set a time, resigning himself to fourth.

With another five championship points and the gate pick in his sights, Tomac went for it to put two tenths between himself and Roczen on a 38.420.

The Etihad Arena’s ultra-short run to the line and technical layout placed considerable emphasis on the gate drop. It was Vince Friese who got the holeshot followed by Savatgy and Roczen, with championship hopeful Tomac down in sixth.

On Lap 3, Roczen, Savatgy and Friese all came to blows with the reigning champion attempting a ambitious double overtake, but ended up clattering into the side of Friesse and falling back to fifth. That allowed Savatgy to seize first.

Disaster struck for Savatgy when he went down on Lap 5, allowing Friese back into the lead and elevating the resurgent pair of Tomac and Roczen back into the top three.

On the penultimate tour, Tomac’s attention was on Friese, and Roczen took the opportunity to snatch second. Friese took his first-ever WSX race win ahead of Roczen and Tomac.

Savatgy gets out of Turn 1 in front followed by Race 1 winner Friese, Roczen and Tomac, but Roczen and Tomac made quick work of Friese to move into second and third respectively.

For the second time in two races, Savatgy crashed out of the lead thrusting Roczen into the driving seat in first, with Tomac and Friese giving chase.

The top two streaked 10 seconds clear of Friese who finished third, and although Tomac was able to pressure Roczen in the closing stages, it was the PMG rider who took his second race win of 2024.

WSX GP Race 03

The final WSX GP start of the year saw Roczen and Savatgy go side-by-side for the lead through Turn 1. By Turn 2, the reigning champion had the advantage, while Tomac slotted into third just behind Savatgy.

The top three ran line astern for the first few laps, but the gaps began to close as they ticked past the halfway point and with it, the tension began to rise.

They were all pushing hard, and on the penultimate tour Savatgy made his third unforced error of the night, dropping a position to Tomac. Roczen secured his second race win of the event and by doing so, delayed second-placed Tomac from taking the title until the SuperFinal. A dejected Savatgy came home third.

SuperFinal

Tomac got the final holeshot of 2024 with Savatgy slotting into second, newly crowned SX2 champion McElrath in third and Roczen fourth.

On Lap 2, Roczen got past McElrath through the whoops to move into third overall and started to hunt down Savatgy. By Lap 7, Roczen was on his tail and once again used a superior run through the whoops to take second from Savatgy.

Calm and composed up front, Tomac opened a four-second gap to Roczen. He stormed to his first win of the night and his 11th of 2024, securing his first WSX Championship in the process. Outgoing champion Roczen came home second with Savatgy taking a well-earned third.
