ROMAIN FEBVRE SECONDO CLASSIFICATO IN PORTOGALLO
Romain Febvre del Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP si è messo in testa alla classifica dopo essere arrivato secondo in un round portoghese terribilmente fangoso del Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross MXGP ad Agueda.
Le leggere piogge durante tutta la settimana hanno lasciato la pista in perfette condizioni per le prove, ma le forti tempeste previste che hanno spazzato l’Atlantico durante il fine settimana hanno richiesto tutto il necessario ai piloti, ai team e al personale di pista durante le gare. Con la pioggia che cadeva a dirotto mentre la prima manche MXGP prendeva vita, era chiaro che non solo la velocità ma anche la sopravvivenza sarebbe stata un fattore chiave. Una partenza tra i primi tre per Febvre è stata un’ottima base per il successo in gara uno e il trio di testa si è presto allontanato; al nono giro dei quattordici il pilota Kawasaki ha preso il secondo posto mentre uno dei suoi rivali ha vacillato e le condizioni della pista sono diventate inevitabilmente sempre più impegnative giro dopo giro mentre lui inseguiva il leader. All’inizio dell’ultimo giro si è arreso brevemente secondo con una caduta ma aveva riconquistato la posizione fino all’ultima curva della gara quando un’altra caduta lo ha riportato al terzo posto. Un netto secondo alla prima curva in gara due il francese è sopravvissuto a un momento da far rizzare i capelli quando il leader è scivolato a terra e, incapace di evitare la carneficina, si è lanciato sopra la moto colpita ma è rimasto a bordo e in poche curve ha riconquistato la terza posizione . Ha inseguito incessantemente il rivale al secondo posto e, sapendo che un sorpasso avrebbe assicurato la vittoria assoluta del GP, ha lanciato una sfida energica mentre la gara entrava nelle fasi finali. Una scivolata poco prima di una salita appiccicosa gli è costata le speranze di vincere il GP e anche una posizione in gara, ma la sua perseveranza gli ha assicurato il secondo posto della giornata e, cosa ancora più significativa, il suoi quarantase punti in campionato nel fine settimana ha ridotto il suo deficit nella serie. il battistrada di tredici punti mentre i primi tre in testa alla classifica si restringono.
Romain Febvre: “Guardare il quadro generale questo fine settimana è stato positivo per il campionato poiché ho recuperato punti, quindi rimango positivo ma voglio vincere GP e manche ed entrambi erano nelle mie mani finché non li ho buttati via. Tutti gli incidenti sono stati errore mio, ma almeno sono accaduti alla fine delle gare, quando non costavano troppe posizioni. Nella prima manche ero secondo all’inizio dell’ultimo giro, ma ho fatto un cross-rut nell’atterraggio sul salto del traguardo e non sono caduto certo, se all’inizio mi fosse costato una posizione perché non sapevo se Pauls fosse nello stesso giro, l’ho ripassato tra le onde ma i miei guanti erano pieni di fango e sono caduto di nuovo all’ultima curva, ero secondo durante la prima curva in gara due, ma Tim è scivolato ed è caduto proprio davanti a me. Non ho avuto la possibilità di evitarlo e ho pensato che sarei caduto anch’io, ma in qualche modo sono rimasto in sella, spero che Tim stia bene e sono arrivato presto terzo a sei giri dalla fine ho quasi superato Pauls ma sono caduto di nuovo. È stato davvero difficile per tutti questo fine settimana, quindi le mie congratulazioni a Pauls per la vittoria; non ha commesso errori e se lo è meritato. Ma rimango positivo; i punti sono ancora vicini e mancano tanti GP alla fine.”
Il compagno di squadra KRT Jeremy Seewer ha dovuto affrontare una montagna da scalare da un cancello esterno dopo le qualifiche, ma lo svizzero è riuscito a risalire con decisione il gruppo in gara uno fino all’ottavo posto fino a quando il fango senza fondo ha spazzato via lui e la sua moto. Ha risposto con enfasi in Gara due con una partenza straordinaria per entrare immediatamente nella top five e rimanerci per tutta la manche. Rimane sesto nella classifica del campionato.
Jeremy Seewer: “Penso che questa sia stata la nostra prima gara nel fango di qualsiasi tipo da un paio d’anni e questo era un altro livello di fango; penso che l’ultima volta che abbiamo fatto una gara come questa è stata in Russia nel 2017. Sapevo che sarebbe stato difficile fare una buona partenza da lontano dopo la diciassettesima posizione delle qualifiche, ma stavo guidando con costanza e correvo ottavo, con il sesto in vista, finché la moto non si è fermata nella prima gara. Non vedo l’ora di affrontare i prossimi due GP nei fine settimana consecutivi; sono in forma e mi riprendo bene, quindi spero di poter tornare presto dove voglio essere.”

ROMAIN FEBVRE RUNNER-UP IN PORTUGAL
Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre has homed in on the series points-leaders after finishing second in a horrendously muddy Portuguese round of the FIM World MXGP Motocross Championship at Agueda.
Light rainfall throughout the week had left the race track in perfect condition for practice but the forecast heavy storms which swept off the Atlantic over the weekend demanded everything from riders, teams and track crew during the racing. With the rain bucketing down as the first MXGP moto burst into life it was clear that not only speed but also survival would be a key factor. A top-three start for Febvre was an excellent base for success in race one and the leading trio were soon pulling well clear; on lap nine of fourteen the Kawasaki rider took over second as one of his rivals faltered and track conditions were inevitably become more-and-more demanding by the lap as he chased down the leader. Entering the final lap he surrendered second briefly with a crash but he had regained the position until the final corner of the race when another fall pushed him back to third. A clear second through turn one in race two the Frenchman survived a hair-raising moment when the leader slithered to the ground and, unable to avoid the carnage, he launched over the stricken bike but stayed aboard and within a few corners had regained third position. He relentlessly chased the rival in second and, in the knowledge that a pass would secure the overall GP victory, he mounted an energetic challenge as the race entered the closing stages. A slip just before a sticky climb cost him the hopes of GP victory and also a position in the race but his perseverence ensured second on the day and, more significantly, his forty-six championship score over the weekend has reduced his deficit to the series pacesetter by thirteen points as the top-three at the top of the standings tighten up.
Romain Febvre: “Looking at the big picture this weekend was good for the championship as I pulled back points so I remain positive but I want to win GPs and motos and both were in my hands until I threw it away. All of the crashes were my mistake but at least they happened late in the races when they did not cost too many positions. In the first moto I was second entering the last lap but I cross-rutted on landing over the finish-jump and crashed. I wasn’t sure if it had cost me a position at first as I didn’t know if Pauls was on the same lap; I passed him back through the waves but my gloves were full of mud and I crashed again at the last corner. I was second through the first turn in race two but Tim slid out and crashed right in front of me. I had no chance to avoid him and I thought I would crash too but somehow I stayed on; I hope Tim is OK. I was soon third and six laps from the end I almost passed Pauls but I crashed again. It was really tough for everybody this weekend so my congratulations to Pauls for the win; he made no mistakes and deserved it. But I remain positive; the points are still close and it’s only five down with fifteen to go.”
KRT teammate Jeremy Seewer faced a mountain to climb from an outside gate after Qualifying but the Swiss moved decisively through the pack in race one to eighth until the bottomless mud claimed him and his bike. He struck back emphatically in race two with a tremendous start to immediately race into the top-five and stay there all moto. He remains sixth in the championship standings.
Jeremy Seewer: “I think this was our first mud-race of any kind for a couple of years and this was another level of mud; I think the last time we had a race like this was Russia in 2017. I knew it would be difficult to get a good start from far outside after P17 from Qualifying but I was riding consistently and running eighth, with sixth in sight, until the bike stopped in the first race. Anyway I got some consolation with fifth in race two so now I’m looking forward to the next two GPs on consecutive weekends; I’m fit and I recover well so I hope I can soon be back where I want to be.”
