MONACO (Principato di Monaco) 1 maggio 2024 – Dopo una pausa di due settimane, il Campionato mondiale di motocross MXGP riprende vita con l’ MXGP del Portogallo nello splendido Crossódromo Internacional de Águeda, nella parte nord-occidentale del paese.
Con una storia che risale al 1985, quando l’olandese Davy Strijbos vinse su una Honda 125cc, il circuito di Agueda ha visto vittorie per leggende come Eric Geboers, Jacky Martens, Alessio Chiodi e Ben Townley nella sua gloriosa storia. Per i piloti con il maggior numero di vittorie basta andare in cima alla lista dei vincitori di GP di tutti i tempi, dato che sia Antonio Cairoli che Jeffrey Herlings hanno vinto 5 volte, con Stefan Everts il detentore del record prima di loro con 4 vittorie. Sorprendentemente, Cairoli è chiaramente in testa con un totale di 12 vittorie individuali rispetto a Herlings con 7 ed Everts con 6.
Con la sua terra rossa immediatamente riconoscibile e la foresta verde scuro come sfondo, la sede portoghese è una delizia per i fotografi, e con i fan portoghesi nativi e spagnoli in viaggio che riempiono le sponde della pista, l’atmosfera è destinata a spingere i corridori a livelli più alti non appena iniziano una serie di tre settimane di azione da Gran Premio consecutive!
Il campionato EMX125 presentato da FMF tiene il suo terzo round dell’anno in Portogallo, con il pilota ungherese Noel Zanocz del Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 che detiene un leggero vantaggio di 8 punti nel campionato sulla stella del Racestore KTM Factory Rookies Gyan Doensen. Lo spagnolo Salvador Perez è terzo per il RFME GASGAS MX Junior Team.
Anche la serie EMX250 è al suo terzo round e l’italiano Valerio Lata ha vinto tre delle quattro manche finora in questa stagione per la squadra Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors , costruendo un gap di 16 punti su Mathis Valin di BUD RACING Kawasaki. Il francese ha vinto una gara EMX125 ad Agueda lo scorso anno, quindi si sentirà fiducioso di chiudere il leader. Il giovane spagnolo Francisco Garcia dovrebbe godere del supporto iberico mentre si trova al 4° posto per il RFME GASGAS MX Junior Team, dietro Cas Valk di Gabriel SS24 KTM che cerca di migliorare il 3° posto.

Il campione del mondo MXGP in carica Jorge Prado è ancora in testa al campionato per la Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing , anche se ha perso alcuni punti durante il fine settimana MXGP del Trentino rispetto al suo principale avversario, quindi Tim Gajser è ora a soli 13 punti dal Team HRC. Il leader del Kawasaki Racing Team Romain Febvre ha ripassato Jeffrey Herlings per il terzo posto nella serie dopo aver vinto la prima gara a Pietramurata, ma si trova ancora a 45 punti dal detentore della tabella rossa, dieci davanti alla punta di diamante del Red Bull KTM Factory Racing .
Il campione, come Everts, ha vinto finora sei gare sulla sede portoghese, ottenendo doppie vittorie in entrambi gli anni in cui ha vinto il titolo MX2 del 2018 e ’19, nonché la vittoria assoluta in MXGP nel 2022, e la prima gara qui la scorsa stagione. La sua serie di quattro vittorie consecutive in GP all’inizio dell’anno attirerà sicuramente molti fan oltre confine dalla sua nativa Spagna, anche se alcuni potrebbero aspettare fino al MXGP della Galizia il fine settimana successivo a Lugo, la città dove è nato Prado.
Herlings ha vinto l’MXGP del Portogallo lo scorso anno, un risultato che lo ha portato al livello di Stefan Everts con 101 vittorie di tutti i tempi nei Gran Premi, prima di ottenerne altri due la scorsa stagione. Cercherà di aggiungere ulteriore valore a quel conteggio, anche dopo aver rivelato di aver subito quattro costole rotte nel suo incidente di prova al MXGP della Sardegna! “The Bullet” ha vinto ad Agueda per tre anni consecutivi in MX2 dal 2011 al 2013, oltre alla doppia sconfitta di Cairoli in MXGP nel 2018.
Gajser ha vinto tre gare qui, ma l’unica volta che ha vinto in totale è stata con una doppia vittoria nel 2019. Febvre è arrivato secondo dietro Herlings l’anno scorso, che è stata la sua prima apparizione sul podio ad Agueda, un circuito raro in cui non ha mai vinto! Brian Bogers del Fantic Factory Racing ha ottimi ricordi della pista, essendo arrivato terzo assoluto qui dietro Prado e Gajser nel 2022.
Il vincitore della RAM Qualifying Race dello scorso anno è stato Ruben Fernandez del Team HRC , ma salterà questa edizione a causa degli infortuni riportati in Argentina. Mattia Guadagnini sta cercando di tornare dall’infortunio per Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, mentre il vincitore dell’EMX250 del 2023, Andrea Bonacorsi, si prepara a fare il suo debutto in MXGP per il Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team.
La stella del Kawasaki Racing Team Jeremy Seewer ha vinto un Gran Premio MX2 qui nel 2017, e si trova solo al sesto posto nella caccia al titolo, un punto dietro l’uomo che ha battuto al secondo posto quel giorno, il pilota della Standing Construct Honda Pauls Jonass. La coppia si è divisa le vittorie della gara quel giorno, con Seewer che ha vinto la classifica generale al tie-break della seconda gara.
Resta ancora la domanda se Jorge Prado riuscirà a mantenere viva la sua serie di vittorie consecutive o qualcuno riuscirà a fermare il treno merci in Portogallo?!
La stella olandese Kay de Wolf porta la tabella rossa per Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing in Portogallo e, sebbene non sia riuscito a vincere il Gran Premio per la prima volta quest’anno in Trentino, ha perso solo tre punti durante il fine settimana contro il suo principale inseguitore, Simon Laengenfelder del team Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing . Il divario in testa alla classifica è ora di 26 punti, con Thibault Benistant, terzo classificato, a ulteriori 39 punti di distanza dal Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2. Liam Everts ha vinto in Trentino per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, ed è salito al 7° posto in classifica mentre recupera dalla mancanza del MXGP dell’Argentina a causa di un infortunio al pollice pre-campionato.
Come è accaduto in diversi circuiti quest’anno, nessuno nell’attuale formazione MX2 ha vinto un GP prima ad Agueda. De Wolf si è avvicinato di più con 3-2 piazzamenti per il 2° posto assoluto la scorsa stagione dietro Jago Geerts, mentre Mikkel Haarup della squadra Monster Energy Triumph Racing ha ottenuto il 2° posto assoluto qui nel 2022 con punteggi 4-2. Sorprendentemente, sono gli unici piloti attualmente nella MX2 ad aver vinto i primi tre trofei GP lontano dal Portogallo. Andrea Adamo è arrivato 2° nella prima gara dello scorso anno per la Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, e dopo un paio di GP deludenti sul suolo italiano, il campione del mondo MX2 in carica spera di risalire dal 5° posto in classifica, dove si trova a soli 8 punti dietro Lucas Coenen di Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, che a sua volta è solo un punto dietro Benistant, terzo!
La natura selvaggiamente imprevedibile della classe MX2 lascia la possibilità che i risultati vadano ovunque tra i principali piloti ufficiali, e solo i più coraggiosi scommetterebbero su qualsiasi risultato!

ROUND FIVE COMES ALIVE AT THE MXGP OF PORTUGAL
MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 1 May 2024 – After a two-week break, the MXGP Motocross World Championship kicks back into life with the MXGP of Portugal at the stunning Crossódromo Internacional de Águeda in the north-western part of the country.
With a history stretching back to 1985, when Dutchman Davy Strijbos took the win on a 125cc Honda, the Agueda circuit has seen victories for legends such as Eric Geboers, Jacky Martens, Alessio Chiodi, and Ben Townley in its glorious history. For the riders with the most wins, you need only go to the top of the all-time GP winners list, as both Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings have won 5 times, with Stefan Everts the record holder before them with 4 victories. Amazingly, Cairoli is clearly out in front with a total of 12 individual race wins compared to Herlings on 7 and Everts on 6.
With its instantly recognisable red dirt and dark green forest as a backdrop, the Portuguese venue is a photographer’s delight, and with both native Portuguese and travelling Spanish fans packing the trackside banking, the atmosphere is bound to drive the riders to further heights as they start a three-week run of back-to-back-to-back Grand Prix action!
The EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF holds its third round of the year in Portugal, with Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 rider Noel Zanocz from Hungary holding a slender 8-point Championship lead over Racestore KTM Factory Rookies star Gyan Doensen. Spain’s Salvador Perez holds third for the RFME GASGAS MX Junior Team.
The EMX250 series is also on to its third round, and Italian Valerio Lata has won three of the four races so far this season for the Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors squad, building a 16-point gap over BUD RACING Kawasaki’s Mathis Valin. The Frenchman won an EMX125 race at Agueda last year so he will feel confident of closing down the leader. Spanish youngster Francisco Garcia should enjoy some Iberian support as he lies 4th for the RFME GASGAS MX Junior Team, behind Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Cas Valk who looks to improve on 3rd.
The reigning MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado still leads the Championship for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, although he lost a few points over the MXGP of Trentino weekend to his main opposition, so Tim Gajser is now just 13 points behind for Team HRC. Kawasaki Racing Team leader Romain Febvre re-passed Jeffrey Herlings for third in the series after winning the first race at Pietramurata, but still lies 45 points behind the red plate holder, ten ahead of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing spearhead.
The Champion has, like Everts, won six races at the Portuguese venue so far, taking double race victories in both of his MX2 title-winning years of 2018 & ’19, as well as the overall in MXGP in 2022, and the first race here last season. His streak of four straight GP wins to start the year will certainly pull many fans across the border from his native Spain, although a few might wait until the MXGP of Galicia the following weekend at Lugo, the town where Prado was born.
Herlings won last year’s MXGP of Portugal, a result which pulled him level with Stefan Everts on 101 all-time Grand Prix wins, before he went on to claim two more last season. He’ll be looking to add to that tally further, even after revealing that he actually sustained four broken ribs in his practice crash at the MXGP of Sardegna! “The Bullet” won at Agueda for three straight years in MX2 from 2011 to 2013, as well as a double defeat of Cairoli in MXGP in 2018.
Gajser has won three races here, but the only time he won overall was with a double victory in 2019. Febvre finished second to Herlings last year, which was his first podium appearance at Agueda, a rare circuit at which he has never won! Fantic Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers has good memories of the track, having finished third overall here behind Prado and Gajser in 2022.
Last year’s RAM Qualifying Race winner was Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez, but he will miss this edition through injuries sustained in Argentina. Mattia Guadagnini is looking to return from injury for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, while the 2023 EMX250 winner, Andrea Bonacorsi, moves up to make his MXGP debut for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team.
Kawasaki Racing Team star Jeremy Seewer won an MX2 Grand Prix here in 2017, and he lies just sixth in the title chase, one point behind the man he beat into second that day, Standing Construct Honda rider Pauls Jonass. The pair split the race wins that day, with Seewer taking the overall on the second race tiebreaker.
The question still remains as to whether Jorge Prado will be able to keep his winning streak alive, or will anyone be able to stop the freight train in Portugal?!

Amazingly they are the only riders currently in MX2 to have taken a top three GP trophy away from Portugal. Andrea Adamo was 2nd in the first race last year for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and after a disappointing couple of GPs on Italian soil, the reigning MX2 World Champion will be hoping to lift himself from 5th in the standings, where he sits just 8 points behind Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, who himself is just a point behind Benistant in third!
The wildly unpredictable nature of the MX2 class leaves possibilities of the results going anywhere among the leading factory riders, and only the bravest would bet on any outcome!
