A un mese e mezzo dall’apertura del campionato americano Supercross, Eli Tomac ha ripreso ad allenarsi per alcune settimane nella sua casa in Colorado. Consapevole del compito che lo attende, in particolare contro Jett Lawrence, il pilota ufficiale Yamaha Racing ha una sola ambizione: cercare un terzo titolo importante e unirsi così a leggende come Bob Hannah e Jeff Stanton.
Con 51 vittorie in Supercross e il secondo miglior interprete della storia dietro McGrath, Eli Tomac potrebbe pianificare un ritiro d’oro. Ma questo il pilota della Yamaha Star Racing, frustrato dall’esito della stagione 2023. Con un nuovissimo tallone d’Achille, sta costruendo il suo ritorno dopo sette mesi senza gareggiare. “Ovviamente non avrei mai voluto concludere la stagione della 450 SX in questo modo, uscendo dallo stadio tenendomi la gamba. Come pilota, penso di avere ancora una grande stagione davanti a me. Non ho ancora finito e non volevo ritirarmi con questa immagine. Se avessi vinto il titolo, allora sì, avrebbe potuto essere la mia ultima stagione in Supercross. Ma non volevo fermarmi così.”
Dopo 14 anni da professionista, Eli Tomac non voleva ritirarsi in seguito ad un fallimento. È stato ad agosto che, nella sua casa di Cortez, in Colorado, ha deciso di tornare nel 2024 con l’unico obiettivo di vincere ancora!
“Sì, questa è la mia unica ambizione per il prossimo anno. Il 2024 sarà l’anno del riscatto o della vendetta. Voglio tornare al gradino più alto del campionato Supercross e questa è l’unica cosa che mi preoccupa in questo momento. »
Anaheim è prevista per il 6 gennaio e fino ad allora Tomac e l’intero team stanno bruciando carburante sulla pista di prova in preparazione al suo ritorno.
“Sono tornato! Questo è il modo più semplice per dirlo. Sto guidando di nuovo il Supercross ed è bello. Sono tornato al mio normale programma di allenamento. Faccio un po’ di test sulla moto e nel frattempo guido molto. Il mio obiettivo era tornare in moto a novembre ed eccoci qui. È perfetto in termini di tempismo. Perdere il titolo mi ha davvero deluso nel profondo. Sentivo che la mia carriera non era ancora finita. Questo è il motivo principale per cui sono tornato. È stato orribile andarsene in quel modo. Tutto tranne quello! Non è che ho avuto un grosso incidente o che il mio motore sia esploso in pista. Stavo solo eseguendo una sezione ritmica classica e il mio tendine d’Achille ha ceduto. È stato un una cosa pazzesca da sentire. In pratica mi sono subito detto che non era il momento di andarsene e che avevo ancora la motivazione per fare un’altra stagione.”
L’anno prossimo, Eli Tomac incontrerà il nuovissimo King Of Paris Jett Lawrence.
“È vero che si parla molto di Jett Lawrence. Tutti lo guarderanno e avrà un bersaglio sulla schiena per così dire. La grande incognita sarà vederlo in una stagione SX completa della 450cc. Non illuderti, lui sarà lì. Ma non dimenticare Chase Sexton, è il numero uno nel Supercross. Per quanto mi riguarda questi sono i miei due principali rivali per il titolo. Dopodiché ci saranno anche quattro o cinque buoni piloti in corsa per il campionato. Ci sono sempre molte incognite. Penso al mio compagno di squadra Cooper Webb, Ken Roczen, Jason Anderson. Il campo sarà molto forte, come ogni anno. Ciò che mi impressiona di più di Jett Lawrence è il suo comportamento in gara e ciò che mostra in pista alla sua età. Questo è esattamente ciò che caratterizza la prossima generazione di piloti. Non sono mai stato in grado di vincere così tante gare di fila e così tante vittorie in una giornata. È impressionante da vedere e sto cercando di studiare molte cose su di lui, perché so che dovrò affrontarlo per una stagione. È fantastico e, a dire il vero, non vedo l’ora.”
Nonostante tutti i suoi titoli, Eli Tomac ha ancora sete di vittorie alimentate da quella delusione del 2023.
” Questo è quello che voglio. In realtà devo dimostrare che alcune persone si sbagliano. Posso ancora vincere a 31 anni ed essere di nuovo campione.”
Motivo in più per pensare all’immagine che lascerà nello sport e al suo probabile ingresso un giorno nella Hall of Fame.
“Sì, ci penso sicuramente, ma sai cosa mi sorprende di più? Non sai mai cosa ti riserverà il futuro e quanto lontano andrà la tua carriera. E a 31 anni, all’improvviso, ho capito tutto questo. È successo così in fretta. Sono stati anni incredibili per arrivare a questo punto. Ma è difficile per me parlare di me stesso o vantarmi. Essere il secondo pilota di maggior successo di tutti i tempi nell’US SX (51 vittorie) non è cosa da poco. Voglio vincere di più. Sì, spesso la gente mi parla di titoli e vittorie. Ma in fondo, non sono soddisfatto di tutto questo. Manca qualcosa ed è per questo che correrò nel 2024. Forse mi prenderò il tempo per realizzare e riflettere su ciò che ho fatto una volta che mi sarò ritirato. Ma non prima. »

With a month and a half to go before the opening of the American Supercross Championship, Eli Tomac has resumed training for a few weeks at his home in Colorado. “Of course I never wanted to end the 450 SX season in this way, walking out of the stadium holding my leg. As a rider, I think I still have a great season ahead of me. I’m not done yet and I didn’t want to retire on this image. If I had won the title, then yes, it might have been my last season in Supercross. But I didn’t want to stop this way.”
After 14 years as a professional, Eli Tomac did not want to retire on a failure. It was in August that he made the decision at his home in Cortez, Colorado, to return in 2024 with the sole aim of winning again!
“Yes, that’s my one and only ambition for next year. 2024 will be the year of redemption or revenge. I want to get back to the top step in the Supercross championship and that’s all I’m concerned about at the moment.”
Anaheim is scheduled for January 6 and until then, Tomac and the whole team are burning fuel at the test track in preparation for his return.
” I’m back ! That’s the simplest way to put it. I’m riding Supercross again and it’s nice. I went back to my normal training schedule. I do a little testing on the bike and a lot of riding in between. My goal was to get back on the bike in November and here we are. It’s perfect in terms of timing. Missing out on the title really disappointed me to the core. I felt like my career wasn’t over yet. That’s the main reason I came back. It was horrible to leave like that. Anything but that! It’s not like I had a big crash or my engine blew up on the track. I was just doing a classic rhythm section and my Achilles tendon gave out. It was a crazy thing to do. Basically, I immediately told myself that it wasn’t time to leave and that I still had the motivation to do another season.”
Next year, Eli Tomac will cross paths with the brand new King Of Paris Jett Lawrence.
“It’s true that there’s a lot of talk about Jett Lawrence. Everyone will look at him and he will have a target on his back so to speak. The big unknown will be to see him in a full 450cc SX season. Don’t kid yourself, he’ll be there. But don’t forget Chase Sexton, he’s the number one in Supercross. As far as I’m concerned, these are my two main rivals for the title. After that, there will be four or five good riders in the running for the championship too. There are always a lot of unknowns. I’m thinking of my teammate Cooper Webb, Ken Roczen, Jason Anderson. The field will be very strong, as it is every year. What impresses me most about Jett Lawrence is his racing behavior and what he shows on the track at his age. This is exactly what characterizes the next generation of riders. I have never been able to win so many races in a row and so many wins on the day. It’s impressive to see and I’m trying to study a lot of things about him, because I know I’m going to have to face him for a season. It’s cool, and to tell you the truth, I can’t wait.”
Despite all his titles, Eli Tomac still has a thirst for victories fueled by that 2023 disappointment.
” That’s what I want. Actually I need to prove some people wrong. I can still win at 31 and be champion again.”
All the more reason to think about the image he will leave in the sport and his probable entry into the Hall of Fame one day.
“Yes, I definitely think about it, but you know what surprises me the most? You never know what your future will hold and how far your career will go. And at 31, suddenly, I realized all that. It happened so fast. It was an incredible few years to get to this point. But it’s hard for me to talk about myself or brag. Being the second most successful rider of all time in US SX (51 wins) is no small thing. I want to win more. Yes, people often talk to me about titles and victories. But deep down, I’m not satisfied with all that. There’s something missing and that’s why I’ll be riding in 2024. Maybe I’ll take the time to realize and reflect on what I’ve done once I’ve retired. But not before.”
