Long Live the Glory Days: 90’s Motocross Meets 2023

Ah, the ’90s! Neon colours. Mullets. Hardcore scrambling, and of course, who could forget the distinctive rasp of a two-stroke?

Fast forward to 2023. The scent of two-stroke might have lessened, but the spirit of the ’90s remains very much alive. At the MXGP of Flanders in Lommel, Belgium, we found ourselves right back in the heart of the action as Yamaha embarked on a half-century celebration of our championship-winning YZ.

With the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams decked out in special retro-inspired livery that paid homage to the eye-catching 1993 white and pink YZ design, the Belgian Grand Prix didn’t merely reignite our motocross memories; it brought the glory days back to life in full technicolour.

Throughout the weekend, we spiralled down memory lane with the heroes of the past like Marnicq Bervoets, Paul Malin, and Werner de Wit. But it wasn’t all about nostalgia – the future was in full force too, with electrifying performances by Jago Geerts – whose dominant Grand Prix win sparked an emotional celebration – and Glenn Coldenhoff, Jeremy Seewer, and Rick Elzinga.

And here’s the best part! You don’t have to take our word for it. We’ve distilled this nostalgic journey into an epic 6-minute video to relive the moment.

And on that note, “YZ, here’s to 50 years of thrilling rides – and to many more!”
