Determinato Fernandez ottiene meritato podio in Germania
Sul duro e accidentato circuito di Teutschenthal in Germania, Ruben Fernandez del Team HRC ha messo a segno una prestazione grintosa conquistando il suo terzo podio della stagione, su una pista che non è una delle sue preferite.
Dopo essere arrivato sesto nella gara di qualificazione, lo spagnolo si è messo in ottima posizione sin dal via, visto che il suo pilota Honda CRF450R è riuscito a rimontare appena fuori dai primi tre in entrambe le gare. Da lì, in gara uno, ha mantenuto un ritmo forte e costante su quello che si stava rivelando un terreno estremamente insidioso. Mentre quelli intorno a lui commettevano errori, ha continuato a dare il massimo, facendo registrare tempi sul giro costanti e alla fine è finito al terzo posto.
Dato che quest’anno è arrivato quarto assoluto in numerose occasioni, il numero 70 sapeva che la battaglia era vinta solo a metà e aveva ancora molto lavoro da fare per tornare sul podio dopo aver fatto il viaggio lì dopo una vittoria in Patagonia-Argentina e un terzo in Spagna. Ancora una volta, una buona partenza si è messo in un’ottima posizione con solo un paio di corridori davanti a lui, ma anche se non è riuscito ad aggrapparsi a loro, si è comunque allontanato dal resto del gruppo. Con le dimensioni dei solchi che continuavano a crescere, lo slancio era tutto importante ma piccoli stalli hanno permesso al pilota dietro di recuperare e con un giro rimanente, Fernandez aveva bisogno di mantenere il suo quarto posto in gara per salire sul podio. Mettendo a segno uno dei migliori giri della sua manche, il #70 ha resistito a tutta la pressione del pilota quinto e ha mantenuto quello che è stato un meritato e combattuto terzo posto assoluto.
Potrebbe aver guidato meglio in altre gare senza salire sui podio, ma questo ha mostrato la determinazione che ha Fernandez ed è stata la giusta ricompensa per una stagione di ottime prestazioni. Ora si trova a soli 10 punti dal terzo posto nel campionato MXGP 2023, e con metà della stagione ancora da correre e molte piste che favoriscono il suo stile, c’è l’opportunità per molti altri viaggi sul podio in questa stagione.
Il prossimo è il round di Sumbawa, in Indonesia, il 24-25 giugno, dove si è piazzato terzo assoluto nel 2022 in quella che è stata la prima visita dei GP sull’isola. Migliaia di fan sono venuti fuori durante quel fine settimana e Fernandez cercherà di dare spettacolo per loro ancora una volta, sull’impressionante circuito che ha apprezzato molto lo scorso anno.

Sono così felice di essere salito sul podio perché ho dovuto lottare duramente questo fine settimana per realizzarlo e sento di aver meritato di essere qui dopo le prestazioni precedenti. È divertente che questo fine settimana non avessi davvero feeling con la pista eppure sono sul podio e in altri luoghi mi sono sentito molto meglio e non ce l’ho fatta. Tuttavia, dimostra che ogni fine settimana mi do una possibilità e che non posso arrendermi. Ho reso le cose un po’ più difficili per me stesso alla fine della seconda manche, ma ho tenuto duro ed è stato sufficiente. Grazie mille a tutto il Team HRC per avermi supportato e aiutato perché è stato un fine settimana difficile ma abbiamo continuato a lavorare sodo e non vedo l’ora che arrivi la piccola pausa prima di andare in Indonesia, che è una pista che mi piace.

Sapevamo che questo fine settimana sarebbe stato difficile per Ruben, perché questo non è lo stile di pista che gli piace. Ha comunque mantenuto la concentrazione durante tutte le sessioni, cercando di migliorarsi e mettendosi nelle condizioni di rimontare sul podio. Un terzo posto in gara uno è stato un risultato impressionante e poi quando era quarto in gara due, forse non è stata la prestazione più pulita, ma ha abbassato la testa e ha spinto fino alla fine. Questo è il suo terzo podio della stagione e siamo molto orgogliosi di come si è comportato finora, e siamo entusiasti di come se la caverà nella seconda metà dell’anno.

Determined Fernandez gets deserved podium in Germany
At the tough, rutted Teutschenthal circuit in Germany, Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez put in a gritty performance to take his third podium of the season, on a track that isn’t one of his favourites.
After finishing sixth in the qualification race yesterday, the Spaniard put himself in excellent positions off the start, as his Honda CRF450R rider got round just outside the top three in both races. From there, in race one, he maintained a strong, steady pace on what was proving to be extremely treacherous terrain. Whilst those around him were making mistakes, he kept plugging away, putting in consistent laptimes and eventually ended up in third place.
Given the fact that he’s finished fourth overall on numerous occasions this year, the #70 knew that the battle was only half-won and he still had a lot of work to do to get back to the podium after making the trip there after a victory in Patagonia-Argentina and a third in Spain. Once again, a good start put himself in a great position with just a couple of riders ahead of him but although he was unable to latch on them, he still was pulling away from the rest of the field. With the size of the ruts continuing to grow, momentum was all important but small stalls allowed the rider behind to catch up and with one lap remaining, Fernandez needed to maintain his fourth place in the race to get onto the podium. Putting in one of the best laps of his moto, the #70 withstood all the pressure from the rider in fifth and held on to what was a thoroughly deserved and hard-fought third place overall.
He may have ridden better at other venues without getting on the box, but this showed the determination that Fernandez has, and was just-reward for a season of excellent performances. He now sits just 10 points behind third place in the 2023 MXGP Championship, and with half the season still to race, and plenty of tracks that favour his style, there is the opportunity for many more trips to the podium in this campaign.
Next up is the round in Sumbawa, Indonesia, on June 24-25, where he placed third overall in 2022 on what was the first visit by the GPs to the island. Thousands of fans came out during that weekend and Fernandez will be looking to put on a show for them once again, on the impressive circuit that he thoroughly enjoyed last year.

I’m so glad to be up on the podium as I had to fight hard this weekend to make it happen and I feel like I have deserved to be here after previous performances. It’s funny that this weekend I didn’t really have feeling for the track and yet I’m on the podium and at other venues I’ve felt much better and not made it. Still, it shows that every weekend I am giving myself a chance and that I can’t give up. I did make things a bit harder for myself at the end of the second moto but I held on and it was enough. Big thanks to the whole of Team HRC for supporting me and helping me out because it was a difficult weekend but we kept working hard and I’m looking forward to the small break before we head to Indonesia, which is a track I like.

We knew coming into this weekend that it would be tough for Ruben, as this isn’t the style of track that he likes. However, he kept his focus throughout all the sessions, trying to improve and putting himself in a position to make it up on the podium. A third in race one was an impressive result and then when he was running in fourth in race two, it maybe wasn’t the cleanest performance but he put his head down and pushed until the very end. This is his third podium of the season and we are very proud of how he’s performed so far, and we are excited for how he’ll do in the second half of the year.
