Tomac vince Daytona Supercross per la settima volta da record
Anche Hunter Lawrence fa la storia con la vittoria nella classe 250SX

Eli Tomac di Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing ha ottenuto una meritata vittoria Monster Energy AMA Supercross alla 53a edizione del Daytona Supercross, portando a sette il suo numero record di vittorie nella sede.

Cooper Webb della Red Bull KTM era vicino ma si è dovuto accontentare del secondo posto al Round 8 sull’esclusiva pista costruita nel trio del Daytona International Speedway. Chase Sexton del Team Honda HRC ha avuto alcune chiamate ravvicinate ma nessuna caduta per finire terzo sulla pista Supercross ad alta velocità. Nel quarto round della serie 250SX della Eastern Regional da 10 round, Hunter Lawrence del Team Honda HRC ha vinto Daytona con uno stile convincente.

Quando il cancello è caduto per il Main Event della classe 450SX, Tomac ha afferrato l’Holeshot ma Webb ha preso una linea esterna nella seconda curva e ha strappato il comando. Sexton ha mantenuto il terzo posto con Justin Barcia di Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing che ha fatto pressione per prendere il posto. Dopo un giro, Jason Anderson di Monster Energy Kawasaki era arrivato quinto, e RJ Hampshire di Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing si è piazzato sesto nel suo primo Main Event della classe 450SX dopo aver vinto la sua gara di qualifica.

Con la pioggia che scendeva, Webb ha mantenuto il comando della gara. Quindi, a circa sette minuti dall’inizio della gara di 20 minuti più un giro, Webb e Tomac hanno avuto uno scambio feroce. I due piloti si sono scambiati il comando quattro volte in una sezione, con Webb che ha mantenuto il primo posto dopo che i due piloti si sono scontrati entrando in una curva rialzata e solcata. Tomac è stato mandato a bordo pista, ma non fuori pista. L’incidente ha permesso a Sexton di colmare il divario e improvvisamente i primi tre in classifica hanno avuto tutti la possibilità di vincere a Daytona.

Nove minuti dopo, Webb è andato in folle entrando nella sezione ritmica ad alta velocità subito dopo il traguardo. Tomac è saltato oltre e ha bloccato il vantaggio. I primi quattro, Tomac, Webb, Sexton e Barcia erano ancora vicini, con meno di quattro secondi che separavano i quattro piloti.

Poi Sexton ha commesso un grosso errore in una delle sezioni ritmiche sconnesse. Barcia ha provato a capitalizzare, Sexton ha bloccato e i corridori si sono riuniti poco prima di un salto triplo. Il contatto ha mandato Barcia fuori pista ma non a terra. Meno di un giro dopo Sexton ha fermato la sua moto frenando per la curva stretta ed elevata. Barcia ha provato a scavalcarlo all’uscita della curva ei piloti si sono riavvicinati. Il secondo incidente è andato peggio per Barcia e si è ritrovato sul suolo della Florida. Barcia è riuscito a rimontare in tempo per stare davanti ad Anderson che era al quinto posto.

Negli ultimi giri Webb ha fatto una spinta per tornare su Tomac. Il pilota KTM ha ridotto il divario a 1,4 secondi quando i piloti hanno raggiunto la bandiera bianca. Ma Tomac ha realizzato un ultimo giro senza errori e ha mantenuto la sua Yamaha davanti. Quando Tomac ha superato la dama, ha allungato il suo record di vittorie di tutti i tempi a Daytona a sette e ha preso possesso esclusivo del terzo posto nelle vittorie di tutti i tempi nella classe 450SX, solo uno dietro James Stewart che era nella cabina di trasmissione commentando la gara insieme a Ricky Carmichael e Daniel Blair .

Nella Eastern Regional 250SX Class Fire Power Honda, Max Anstie è balzato fuori per primo con l’Holeshot, ma lungo il primo rettilineo Nate Thrasher di Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing ha preso il comando. Un giro dopo Tom Vialle della Red Bull KTM ha preso il primo posto da Thrasher. Lawrence era in testa e quando i corridori hanno attraversato per la prima volta la sezione di sabbia si è scontrato con Thrasher. Lawrence ha ottenuto la posizione e Thrasher è caduto ed è ripartito dall’ultimo posto. Lawrence è scattato in avanti, superando Vialle e portandosi in testa al primo passaggio attraverso le whoops.

Jeremy Martin di Muc-Off FXR ClubMX Yamaha si è piazzato terzo con Chris Blose di Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki dietro e Haiden Deegan di Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing al quinto. Poi Vialle è caduto duramente nel ritmo corto dopo le whoops, rinunciando al suo secondo posto. Quattro minuti e mezzo nei 15 minuti più un giro di gara, con una leggera pioggia che scendeva, Deegan ha superato con sicurezza Martin per conquistare il terzo posto. Con 8:22 rimasti sul cronometro della gara, Thrasher ha raggiunto il decimo posto e ha cercato di avere la velocità per raggiungere i primi cinque. Mezzo giro dopo Thrasher è atterrato su un Tuff Blox, è caduto violentemente ed è andato fuori gara; ma Thrasher è rientrato ed è risalito fino al decimo posto al traguardo.

La vittoria di Lawrence ha eguagliato la vittoria di suo fratello nel 2022, rendendo i fratelli Lawrence i primi nella storia di questo sport ad avere ciascuno una vittoria al Daytona Supercross. Ciò aumenta il loro altro “primo” in questa stagione come l’unico duo di fratelli a guidare contemporaneamente i punti della classe 250SX regionale orientale e occidentale. Anstie ha ottenuto il suo secondo posto nel 2023 e il debuttante Haiden Deegan ha ottenuto il suo primo podio in carriera solo nella sua quarta gara professionale di Supercross.

La serie si dirigerà a Indianapolis il prossimo fine settimana, dove il Lucas Oil Stadium ospiterà il Round 9 della stagione Monster Energy AMA Supercross da 17 round del 2023 e la nuovissima serie del SuperMotocross World Championship da 31 round. La serie inaugurale incorpora Supercross, Pro Motocross e tre eventi in stile ibrido per incoronare un campione del mondo di SuperMotocross in ogni classe di cilindrata. Le stagioni 2023 si combinano per la più grande borsa totale di qualsiasi serie di corse motociclistiche fuoristrada con una borsa da 10 milioni di dollari.

Tomac Wins Daytona Supercross for Record Seventh Time

Hunter Lawrence Also Makes History with 250SX Class Win

 Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac took a hard-earned Monster Energy AMA Supercross victory at the 53rd running of the Daytona Supercross, stretching his record number of wins at the venue to seven.

Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb was close but had to settle for second place at Round 8 on the unique track built into the trioval of the Daytona International Speedway. Team Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton had some close calls but no crashes to finish third on the high-speed Supercross track. In the fourth round of the 10-round Eastern Regional 250SX Class series, Team Honda HRC’s Hunter Lawrence took the Daytona win in convincing style.

When the gate dropped for the 450SX Class Main Event, Tomac grabbed the Holeshot but Webb took an outside line in the second corner and snatched the lead. Sexton held third place with Troy Lee Designs Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Justin Barcia applying pressure to take over the spot. After one lap Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson had made his way into fifth, and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s RJ Hampshire sat sixth in his first 450SX Class Main Event after winning his Heat race. 

With the rain coming down Webb held command of the race. Then approximately seven minutes into the 20-minute plus one lap race Webb and Tomac had a fierce exchange. The two racers traded the lead four times in one section, with Webb retaining the front spot after the two riders bumped entering a rutted, elevated corner. Tomac was sent wide, but not off the track. The incident allowed Sexton to close the gap and suddenly the top three in the points all had a shot at the Daytona win. 

Nine minutes in, Webb hit neutral entering the high-speed rhythm just after the finish line. Tomac jumped past and locked down the lead. The front four, Tomac, Webb, Sexton, and Barcia were still close, with less than four seconds separating the four riders. 

Then Sexton made a big mistake in one of the rutted rhythm sections. Barcia tried to capitalize, Sexton blocked, and the riders came together right before a triple jump. The contact sent Barcia off the track but not down. Less than a lap later Sexton stalled his bike braking for the tight, elevated corner. Barcia tried to jump past on the corner’s exit and the riders came together again. The second incident went worse for Barcia and he found himself down on the Florida soil. Barcia was able to remount in time to stay in front of Anderson in fifth.

In the late laps Webb made a push to get back to Tomac. The KTM rider closed the gap down to 1.4 seconds as the racers reached the white flag. But Tomac laid down a mistake-free final lap and kept his Yamaha up front. When Tomac crossed the checkers he stretched his all-time Daytona win record to seven and took sole possession of third in all-time 450SX Class wins, just one behind James Stewart who was in the broadcast booth calling the race alongside Ricky Carmichael and Daniel Blair.

In the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Fire Power Honda’s Max Anstie jumped out in first with the Holeshot but down the first straight Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Nate Thrasher took over the lead. One turn later Red Bull KTM’s Tom Vialle took the top spot from Thrasher. Lawrence was up near the front and as the racers went through the sand section for the first time he collided with Thrasher. Lawrence got the position and Thrasher went down and fell back to last place. Lawrence sped forward, blitzing past Vialle and into the lead on the first pass through the whoops. 

Muc-Off FXR ClubMX Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin held third with Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Chris Blose behind and Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan in fifth. Then Vialle crashed hard in the short rhythm after the whoops, giving up his second place spot. Four and a half minutes into the 15-minute plus one lap race, with light rain coming down, Deegan moved confidently past Martin to take over third place. With 8:22 left on the race clock Thrasher reached tenth and looked to have the speed to reach the top five. Half a lap later Thrasher landed on a Tuff Blox, crashed hard, and looked out of the race; but Thrasher re-joined and worked his way back up to tenth by the finish. 

The win by Lawrence matched his brother’s victory in 2022, making the Lawrence brothers the first in the sport’s history to each have a Daytona Supercross win. This augments their other ‘first’ this season as being the only brother duo to simultaneously lead both the Eastern and the Western Regional 250SX Class points. Anstie earned his second runner-up finish of 2023 and rookie Haiden Deegan earned his career-first podium finish in only his fourth professional Supercross race. 

The series heads to Indianapolis next weekend where Lucas Oil Stadium will host Round 9 of both the 17-round 2023 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season as well as the brand-new 31-round SuperMotocross World Championship series. The inaugural series incorporates Supercross, Pro Motocross, and three hybrid-style events to crown one SuperMotocross World Champion in each bike displacement class. The 2023 seasons combine for the largest total purse of any off-road motorcycle racing series with a 10 million dollar purse.
