La difesa del titolo di Tomac parte alla grande con vittorie consecutive nel Supercross
Eli Tomac di Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing ha lanciato una solida difesa del titolo 450SX, ottenendo vittorie consecutive con una vittoria al San Diego Supercross. Il campione in carica mantiene un punteggio perfetto a bordo della nuovissima YZ450F nel campionato Monster Energy AMA Supercross 2023, parte del campionato mondiale SuperMotocross inaugurale. Anche il suo compagno di squadra Dylan Ferrandis ha mostrato forza, tornando dalle avversità per finire sesto al supercross d’esordio nel nuovo Snapdragon Stadium di San Diego, in California.
Tomac ha iniziato bene la giornata, qualificandosi quarto, e ha proseguito con una prestazione dominante nella sua gara di calore, conquistando l’holeshot e la vittoria. Sebbene non sia stato in grado di ripetere quella partenza nell’evento principale, è rapidamente salito al terzo posto e si è portato al primo posto al quinto giro. Ha stabilito un ritmo serrato davanti e ha costruito un comodo vantaggio, che si è rivelato fondamentale alla fine della gara quando la concorrenza ha colmato il divario mentre Tomac si faceva strada nel traffico doppiato. Il Coloradan ha mantenuto la calma sotto pressione per segnare la sua seconda vittoria consecutiva della stagione e partire con 52 punti.
Ferrandis si è qualificato quinto dietro al suo compagno di squadra ed è partito bene nella sua gara di qualifica. Sfortunatamente, un piccolo errore ha portato il francese al quarto posto, dandogli una scelta tutt’altro che ideale per l’evento principale. Lottando tra i primi 10 dopo la partenza, Ferrandis ha continuato a spingere e si è fatto strada fino al sesto posto, dove alla fine sarebbe arrivato.
Il prossimo fine settimana, il team Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing torna all’Angel Stadium di Anaheim sabato 28 gennaio, per il terzo round del Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship e della SuperMotocross World Series.

“È stata un’altra grande gara per noi. Sono stato in grado di uscire con l’holeshot e la vittoria della heat. Quindi nell’evento principale, questa volta non ho ottenuto l’holeshot, ma ero lì. Ho fatto un paio di passaggi chiave in quel primo giro e poi sono arrivato a Cooper (Webb). Ho avuto un paio di linee migliori e sono riuscito a recuperare lo slancio sul dragon e ho fatto il sorpasso lì. Ho fatto dei bei giri a metà gara, ma poi verso la fine sono rimasto un po’ bloccato dietro ad alcuni doppiati. Alcune gare sono più facili da aggirare di altre i ragazzi doppiati, ma è così che va quando sei il protagonista. Quando hai un ragazzo come Cooper proprio dietro di te, non ti rende la vita facile, ma ho continuato a spingere. È stato positivo avere quel piccolo vantaggio perché alla fine era abbastanza vicino, ma nel complesso è stata un’altra gara fantastica per noi con questa nuova moto”.

Nell’evento principale, è stato un po’ l’opposto; Ho avuto una brutta partenza e sono tornato attraverso il campo. Tomac’s Title Defense Off to Flying Start with Back-to-Back Supercross Victories
Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac has launched a strong 450SX title defense, taking back-to-back wins with a victory at last night’s San Diego Supercross. The reigning champion maintains a perfect score aboard the all-new YZ450F in the 2023 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, part of the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship. His teammate Dylan Ferrandis also showed strength, coming back from adversity to finish sixth at the debut supercross in the new Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.
Tomac got the day off to a good start, qualifying fourth, and followed that up with a dominant performance in his heat race, grabbing the holeshot and the win. Although he was unable to repeat that start in the main event, he quickly made his way to third and moved into the top spot by lap five. He set a hot pace up front and built a comfortable lead, which proved to be key late in the race as the competition closed the gap while Tomac navigated his way through lapped traffic. The Coloradan kept cool under pressure to score his second-consecutive victory of the season and leave with 52 points.
Ferrandis qualified fifth behind his teammate and got off to a good start in his heat race. Unfortunately, a small mistake shuffled the Frenchman to fourth giving him a less-than-ideal gate pick for the main event. Battling in the top 10 after the start, Ferrandis kept pushing and fought his way forward to sixth, where he would ultimately finish.
Next weekend, the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing team returns to the Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Saturday, January 28, for the third round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and the SuperMotocross World Series.

“It was another great race for us. I was able to come out with the holeshot and the heat race win. Then in the main event, I didn’t get the holeshot this time, but I was right there. I made a couple of key passes on that first lap and then got to Cooper (Webb). I had a couple of better lines and was able to get the momentum up the dragon back and made a block pass there. I rode some good laps in the middle of the race, but then toward the end, I got a little bit stuck behind some lappers. Some races are easier than others to get around guys, but it’s just the way it goes when you’re the lead guy. When you’ve got a guy like Cooper right behind you, it does not make your life easy, but I kept pushing. It was good that I had that little bit of a gap because he was pretty close in the end, but overall, it was another fantastic race for us with this new motorcycle.”

“Overall, the day went well. I felt good all day and got a good start in practice. Going into the night show, I was feeling pretty decent. I got a good start in the heat race, but then I made a small mistake, and it was difficult for me to feel good after that. In the main event, it was kind of the opposite; I got a bad start and came back through the field. It’s very frustrating for me since I try very hard to be the best I can be. We need to analyze this with the team and come back stronger in Anaheim.”

“It was a good day and night for both riders. I know the result may not be exactly where Dylan wants to be, but his speed was right there. His lap times were good, and he was right there with the front pack and could see the podium, and that’s a good thing. It was another exceptional night for Eli. He continues to prove that he’s the fastest guy out there, no matter what it takes. Still, we’ve got to keep pushing to be better and to stay on top.”
