La stagione pilota del FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) si è conclusa in modo spettacolare al Marvel Stadium di Melbourne con quattro campioni del mondo incoronati.
Il pilota tedesco Ken Roczen è il nuovo campione WSX dopo essere arrivato secondo in un drammatico Gran Premio d’Australia WSX. Il titolo WSX pone fine alla siccità del campionato per il pilota autentico della Honda.
Roczen ha detto: “Lo rifarei ancora e ancora, ho avuto un’esperienza così straordinaria. È stata una corsa dura negli ultimi anni, ecco perché l’ho fatto. Non me ne pento. Mi sono divertito così tanto qui, adoro venire in Australia e non vedo l’ora di tornarci. Finalmente ottenere di nuovo un titolo, soprattutto il primo per la mia squadra, è a dir poco sorprendente”.
L’americano Joey Savatgy ha vinto la gara WSX con Roczen secondo e l’americano Justin Brayton al terzo.
Nella SX2 l’americano Shane McElrath è stato incoronato campione del mondo dopo aver vinto il Gran Premio d’Australia da Max Anstie della Honda originale e Aaron Tanti di Craig Dack Racing.
Il campionato del mondo è il primo titolo importante per McElrath, che corre per la Rick Ware Racing.
McElrath ha dichiarato: “Una vittoria è una vittoria, non è mai facile. Questi ragazzi hanno reso difficile. Abbiamo avuto un tempo di preparazione minimo, ma Rick Ware Racing non ha letteralmente smesso di lavorare. Per uscire in cima e per migliorare davvero ogni singola volta in pista, questo è davvero ciò per cui abbiamo lavorato. Numero uno. Sono orgoglioso di questa squadra e di quello che ha fatto in poche settimane”.
MotoConcepts ha vinto il Teams Champions e Honda ha vinto il Campionato Costruttori dopo le ottime prestazioni dei suoi piloti a Cardiff e Melbourne.
La stagione pilota WSX ha visto la partecipazione di 10 squadre internazionali, tra cui il proprietario del team NASCAR e IndyCar, Rick Ware e due team australiani: Honda Genuine e Craig Dack Racing.
Più di 50.000 fan hanno riempito il Marvel Stadium per il Gran Premio d’Australia WSX.
Il presidente di SX Global Tony Cochrane AM, che ha aperto la strada al campionato australiano V8 Supercar, ha affermato che i fan di tutto il mondo erano affamati di vedere le gare di supercross: “Sapevamo che esisteva un mercato globale per il supercross. Hai bisogno del coraggio delle tue convinzioni per affrontare queste cose. Crediamo davvero nel prodotto del supercross mondiale. Crediamo davvero che ci sia un pubblico globale là fuori. Questi atleti sono così talentuosi che crediamo davvero che il mondo voglia vederlo. Siamo pronti a metterlo alla prova. Vedrai, secondo me, questo campionato crescere enormemente nei prossimi due o quattro anni”.

The pilot season of the FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) came to a spectacular end in Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium with four world champions crowned.
German rider Ken Roczen is the new WSX champion after finishing second in a dramatic WSX Australian Grand Prix. The WSX title ends a championship drought for the Genuine Honda rider.
Roczen said: “I would do it over and over again, I’ve had such an amazing experience. It’s been a tough ride the last few years that’s why I did this. I don’t regret it. I’ve had so much fun here, I love coming to Australia and I can’t wait to come back again. Finally getting a title again, especially the first one for my team, is nothing short of amazing.”
American Joey Savatgy won the WSX race with Roczen second and America’s Justin Brayton in third.
In SX2 American Shane McElrath was crowned world champion after winning the Australian Grand Prix from Genuine Honda’s Max Anstie and Craig Dack Racing’s Aaron Tanti.
The world championship is the first major title for McElrath, who rides for the Rick Ware Racing.
McElrath said: “A win is a win, it’s never easy. These guys made it tough. We had minimal prep time but Rick Ware Racing, we literally didn’t stop working. To come out on top, and to really get better every single time on the track, that’s really what we worked for. Number one baby. I am proud of this team and what they’ve done in a few short weeks.”
MotoConcepts won the Teams Champions and Honda took out the Manufacturer’s Championship after strong performances from its riders in Cardiff and Melbourne.
The pilot WSX season featured 10 international teams including NASCAR and IndyCar team owner, Rick Ware and two Australian teams – Honda Genuine and Craig Dack Racing.
More than 50,000 fans filled Marvel Stadium for the WSX Australian Grand Prix.
SX Global President Tony Cochrane AM, who pioneered the Australian V8 Supercar championship, said fans across the world were hungry to see supercross racing, “We knew there was a global market out there for supercross. You need the courage of your convictions to take these things on. We really believe in the product of world supercross. We really do believe there is a global audience out there. These athletes are so talented, we really believe the world wants to see that. We’re prepared to put that to the test. You’re going to see, in my humble belief, this championship grow enormously in the next two to four years.”
