Roger De Coster e il Team USA
Non c’è dubbio, dobbiamo tornare indietro nel tempo fino al 1981 sul circuito di Lommel in Belgio per ricordare la prima volta che il Team USA ha mostrato ai piloti del Grand Prix di essere abbastanza bravi da vincere un Motocross delle Nazioni FIM Monster Energy. Con Roger De Coster desideroso di inviare una squadra in Belgio, ha selezionato i suoi piloti del team ufficiale Honda Johnny O’Mara, Danny Laporte, Chuck Sun, Donnie Hansen e David Bailey per il lavoro.
Con il pieno supporto di Honda America, il giovane team è arrivato presto in Belgio ed era una sensazione di fiducia che questa giovane formazione americana avesse abbastanza problemi per gli specialisti belgi della sabbia.
“Il nostro team arrivò presto”, ha ricordato De Coster. “Andammo su piste di sabbia e ci allenammo, ci siamo allenati e ci siamo allenati. Inizialmente avevamo molti problemi con la moto perché non avevamo esperienza negli Stati Uniti su una sabbia del genere. Ma lavorammo su tutto e in tempo di gara eravamo pronti”.
Sebbene soffrisse di problemi meccanici, De Coster riteneva che le Honda della stagione 1981 fossero speciali e con un po’ di lavoro in più avrebbero potuto facilmente dare alla sua squadra qualche tipo di risultato per sorprendere i piloti del Gran Premio.
“Potevamo vedere il potenziale nelle moto Honda e nei membri del team per quegli eventi. I nostri ragazzi però non stavano vincendo in quel momento. La Suzuki aveva Mark Barnett che vinse la classe 125 e nel Supercross. E Kent Howerton su Suzuki era forte nella classe 250. Il nostro team era Johnny O’Mara, Chuck Sun, Danny LaPorte e Donnie Hansen. Verso la fine dell’anno, i nostri risultati hanno iniziato a migliorare. Abbiamo pensato ‘Dobbiamo andare alle Nazioni'”.
De Coster, essendo una leggenda belga nello sport, non si sentiva a suo agio nel portare una squadra per battere i suoi amati belgi, ma un lavoro è un lavoro, ed è andato al 100% per riportare il trofeo Chamberlain in America con il suo team Honda.
“Ho avuto problemi con me stesso in una certa misura perché era strano andare e rappresentare gli Stati Uniti. Avevo sempre cercato di vincere come pilota per il Belgio. Al Trophee des Nations, come membro della squadra belga, ho fatto parte della squadra vincitrice per dieci anni di seguito. Abbiamo anche vinto sei volte nella classe libera (500cc – Motocross des Nations).”
Sorprendentemente, ora più di 40 anni dopo De Coster porterà il Team USA a Redbud e, dopo un decennio senza vincere il Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, la sua motivazione rimane la stessa del 1981. La vittoria è l’unico obiettivo e chi sa, forse il vecchio veterano può condividere ancora una volta il gusto dello champagne con il Team USA.

De Coster and Team USA
There is no doubt, we have to go all the way back to 1981 at the Lommel circuit in Belgium to remember the first time Team USA showed the Grand Prix riders that they were good enough to win a Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. With Roger De Coster keen to send a team to Belgium, he selected his Honda factory team riders Johnny O’Mara, Danny Laporte, Chuck Sun, Donnie Hansen and David Bailey for the job.
With full support from Honda America, they young team arrived in Belgium early and it was a feeling of confidence that this young American line-up had enough to trouble the Belgian sand specialists.
“Our team went over early,” De Coster remembered. “We went to sand tracks and practiced and practiced and practiced. We initially had a lot of bike problems because we had no experience in the US riding on sand like that. But we worked through the whole thing, and by race-time we were ready.”
Although suffering mechanical issues, De Coster felt the Honda machines of the 1981 season were special and with some extra work could easily give his team some type of result to surprise the Grand Prix riders.
“We could see the potential in the Honda bikes and team members for those events. Our guys were not winning at the time though. Suzuki had Mark Barnett winning the 125 class and in supercross. And Kent Howerton on Suzuki was strong in the 250 class. Our team was Johnny O’Mara, Chuck Sun, Danny LaPorte and Donnie Hansen. Towards the end of the year, our results started to improve. We thought ‘We need to go to the Nations’.”
De Coster, being a Belgian legend in the sport didn’t feel comfortable bringing a team to beat his beloved Belgians, but a job is a job, and he went in 100% to bring the Chamberlain trophy back to America with his Honda team.
“I had problems with myself to a certain extent because it felt strange coming and representing the US. I had always tried to win as a rider for Belgium. In the Trophee des Nations, as a member of the Belgian team, I was part of the winning team ten years in a row. We also won six times in the open class (500cc – Motocross des Nations).”
Amazingly, now more than 40 years later De Coster will take Team USA to Redbud, and after a decade of not winning the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, his motivation remains the same as back in 1981. Victory is the only goal, and who knows, maybe the old veteran can once again share the taste of champagne with Team USA.
