Vialle e Geerts non sono stati turbati mentre la sfida per il titolo MX2 si accende
La storia del campionato MXGP 2022 impallidisce al confronto con la disparità e l’imprevedibilità della gara del 2021, ma il continuo effetto pendolo del duello MX2 2022 tra Jago Geerts della Monster Energy Yamaha e Tom Vialle della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing – per la seconda volta nel ultimi tre anni – sta fornendo una tariffa di intrattenimento decente in questa stagione.
Geerts ha vinto il tredicesimo round in Repubblica Ceca per il suo quarto successo contro i sette di Vialle quest’anno, ma l’apparizione sul podio è stata l’undicesima del belga rispetto ai dieci trofei del francese. Il punteggio di 10-2 di Vialle al Loket significava che ha mancato i primi tre solo per la terza volta nel 2022; una di quelle assenze – al GP di Germania – è stata per un problema tecnico. Gli eventi della giornata hanno significato lo scambio di mano della proprietà della tabella rossa per l’ottava volta in tredici round e sottolinea la natura serrata della gara. Geerts ora aggiunge il rosso alla sua Yamaha blu in vista della partita casalinga a Lommel, in Belgio, ed è stato un convincente vincitore in un teso inseguimento con Vialle nella seconda manche ceca. Vialle era passato in testa al primo giro, ma un errore nella lunga discesa ha dato a Geerts lo slancio e il 22enne è stato anche più efficace attraverso i backmarker, permettendogli di proteggere un divario che oscillava tra 2 e 0,5 secondi .
Dopo che la classe e la serie hanno ricevuto critiche per la piccola affluenza di piloti in Indonesia tre settimane prima – che ha visto solo nove regolari GP correre in Asia – il cancello quasi pieno in Repubblica Ceca è stata quasi una novità. “È da molto tempo che non abbiamo così tanti piloti!” ha detto Vialle. “C’è stato molto traffico negli ultimi cinque giri e a volte può andare per te o contro di te”.
“È una dura battaglia con Tom ed è stata tutta la stagione”, ha detto un Geerts tipicamente riservato. “Sarà dura fino alla fine, ma non vedo l’ora”.
“Abbiamo ricostruito [l’offerta per il campionato] abbastanza bene dopo la mia caduta a Mantova, ma poi abbiamo perso punti in Lettonia e anche in Germania, dove avrei dovuto avere un po’ di vantaggio”, si è lamentato Vialle. “Abbiamo una nuova moto, il che significa che dobbiamo lavorare un po’ ogni gara e quando arriviamo su piste imprecise come Loket dobbiamo trovare un modo”.
Vialle, che è al centro delle voci sul suo futuro e su un possibile trasferimento nella divisione americana della Red Bull KTM, ha ceduto 12 punti a Geerts dopo una prima manche mite in cui non è riuscito a trovare il suo flusso. Alcune modifiche alle sospensioni nella seconda gara lo hanno riportato alla velocità, anche se non è riuscito a sconfiggere Geerts e ora si trova a 8 punti sulla sua scia. Il duo ha finito uno dietro l’altro 14 volte in 26 manche in questa stagione. “Sarà serrato fino alla fine”, ha detto Vialle. “8 punti non sono molti. Dovremo essere presenti in ogni gara, ma sono abbastanza fiducioso”.
PS: Speculazioni davano i due piloti nello steso team, uno in USA (Tom Vialle che parte sicuro anche se dovesse vincere il titolo) e l’altro, Geerts, ma quest’ultimo ha annullato un “pre-Contratto” per rimanere con le blu e provare a vincere il titolo in MX2 e tenerlo per due anni di fila nell’orbita Yamaha dopo il successo di Renaux nel 2021, quindi si annulla la voce precedente e si conferma Jago Geerts in blu!

Vialle and Geerts unfazed as MX2 title challenge hots-up
The story of the 2022 MXGP championship pales into comparison to the disparity and unpredictability of the 2021 contest but the continual pendulum effect of the 2022 MX2 duel between Monster Energy Yamaha’s Jago Geerts and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle – for the second time in the last three years – is providing decent entertainment fare this season.
Geerts won round thirteen in the Czech Republic for his fourth success against Vialle’s seven this year but the rostrum appearance was the Belgian’s eleventh compared to the Frenchman’s ten trophies. Vialle’s 10-2 scorecard at Loket meant he missed the top three for only the third time in 2022; one of those absences – at the German GP – was due to a technical problem. The day’s events meant ownership of the red plate swapped hands for the eighth time in thirteen rounds and underlines the close nature of the contest. Geerts now adds red to his Yamaha blue ahead of his home fixture in Lommel, Belgium and was a convincing victor in a tense chase with Vialle in the second Czech moto. Vialle had pushed into the lead on the first lap but a mistake on the long downhill section gave Geerts the momentum and the 22-year-old was also more effective through the backmarkers, allowing him to protect a cushion that fluctuated between 2 and 0.5 seconds.
After the class and the series received criticism for the small rider turnout in Indonesia three weeks previously – that saw only nine GP regulars racing in Asia – the near-full gate in the Czech Republic was almost a novelty. “It’s a long time that we’ve had this many riders!” Vialle said. “There was quite a lot of traffic in the last five laps and sometimes it can go for you or against you.”
“It’s a hard battle with Tom and it has been all season,” said a typically reserved Geerts. “It will be tough until the end but I’m looking forward to it.”
“We’ve rebuilt [the championship bid] quite well after my crash in Mantova but then we lost points in Latvia and also Germany where I should have had a bit of a cushion,” Vialle lamented. “We have a new bike, which means we need to work a bit every race and when we come to sketchy tracks like Loket we have to find a way.”
Vialle, who is at the centre of rumours involving his future and a possible transfer to the American division of Red Bull KTM, ceded 12 points to Geerts after a meek first moto in which he couldn’t find his flow. Some suspension changes in the second race saw him back to speed, although he could not defeat Geerts and now sits 8 points in his wake. The duo have finished one right behind the other 14 times from 26 motos this season. “It will be tight in the end,” Vialle said. “8 points is not much. We will need to be there every race but I am pretty confident.”
