Vlaanderen domina l’MXGP della Sardegna
Calvin Vlaanderen di Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha ha fatto la storia all’ottavo round del Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross a Riola-Sardo, in Sardegna, dominando ogni sessione in pista per celebrare la sua prima gara e la prima vittoria in un Gran Premio suo e del team. Glenn Coldenhoff della Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP ha aumentato il podio della Yamaha, celebrando l’MXGP della Sardegna sul terzo gradino. Allo stesso tempo, i compagni di squadra Maxime Renaux e Jeremy Seewer hanno completato nei primi cinque.
Il caldo soffocante unito a una pista di sabbia profonda fisicamente impegnativa ha reso l’MXGP della Sardegna la prova definitiva per uomo e macchina. Sabato, i piloti hanno dovuto scommettere la loro energia in termini di quanto tempo hanno trascorso in pista e di quanto impegno hanno messo nella gara di qualificazione con l’obiettivo di risparmiare quanta più energia possibile per domenica. E nonostante i loro migliori sforzi per una gara di qualificazione facile e regolare, si è rivelata tutt’altro che semplice.
Mentre i piloti Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP hanno pubblicato un miscuglio di risultati, la star della giornata è stata Vlaanderen che è partito tra i primi tre e ha spinto la sua YZ450F oltre Prado per ottenere un’enfatica vittoria in gara e la sua prima Pole Position da quando è entrato nella classe MXGP nel 2020.
Affrontando nuovamente il caldo domenica, Vlaanderen ha continuato la sua incredibile carica. L’alto sudafricano non è partito nel migliore dei modi, ma era in un campionato a parte quando si trattava della sua velocità sul circuito di Riola, profondo, accidentato e fisicamente impegnativo. Mentre molti piloti sono sbiaditi nelle condizioni difficili, il sudafricano ha eccelso e, dopo aver superato l’attuale leader del campionato MXGP a 2 giri dalla fine, ha ottenuto una vittoria sorprendente in gara, la prima della sua carriera nella classe MXGP.
La seconda gara è stata anche caratterizzata dal dominio di Vlaanderen e dall’abilità di guidare nella sabbia. Il numero “10” si è caricato dal quarto posto su Ruben Fernandez e Pauls Jonass per prendere il comando su Prado all’8° giro. Da lì, la stella del break-out è arrivata a un’altra fenomenale vittoria in gara.
Il successo di Vlaanderen con una vittoria in una gara di qualificazione seguita da due vittorie in una gara di campionato e un Gran Premio assoluto nello stesso fine settimana arriva come il primo per Yamaha da quando Romain Febvre a bordo di una Monster Energy Yamaha Factory YZ450FM al MXGP della Repubblica Ceca nel 2019. E come di conseguenza, il pilota Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha è balzato al nono posto nella classifica del campionato MXGP. I suoi risultati questo fine settimana sono stati i primi della sua carriera sotto ogni punto di vista. Non so cosa dire; sono solo anni e anni di duro lavoro. Questo è ciò che ho sognato; per diventare un vincitore della classe MXGP. Essere qui in questo momento è come un sogno. Vorrei solo che la mia famiglia fosse qui e tutti quelli che erano a casa”. “Penso che tutto sia iniziato con la settimana precedente, come se mentalmente fosse una cosa così importante nello sport, specialmente a questo livello, credere di poter vincere. E venendo a questo fine settimana, ho creduto onestamente per la prima volta nella mia carriera di poterlo vincere. Ed è una sensazione così bella, solo fiducia e oggi ha dimostrato che potevo farcela”.

Vlaanderen Dominates MXGP of Sardinia
Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha’s Calvin Vlaanderen made history today at the eighth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Riola-Sardo, Sardinia, dominating every session on track to celebrate his and the teams’ first-ever race and Grand Prix win. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Glenn Coldenhoff boosted Yamaha’s podium success, celebrating the MXGP of Sardinia on the third step. At the same time, teammates Maxime Renaux & Jeremy Seewer rounded out the top five.
Stifling hot temperatures paired with a physically demanding deep sand track made the MXGP of Sardinia the ultimate test of man and machine. On Saturday, the riders had to gamble their energy in terms of how much time they spent on track and how much effort they put into the Qualifying Race with the goal being to conserve as much energy as possible for Sunday. And despite their best efforts for an easy and smooth sailing Qualifying Race, it turned out to be anything but.
While the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP riders posted a mixed bag of results, the star of day was Vlaanderen who started inside the top-three and powered his YZ450F past Prado to take an emphatic race win, and his first-ever Pole Position since entering the MXGP class back in 2020.
Dealing with hot conditions again on Sunday, Vlaanderen continued his astonishing charge. The tall South African did not get off to the best start but was in a league of his own when it came to his speed around the deep, rough and physically demanding circuit of Riola. While many riders faded in the challenging conditions, the South African excelled, and after passing the current MXGP Championship Leader with 2-laps remaining, he stormed to an astonishing race win – the first of his MXGP-class career.
While Vlaanderen stole the spotlight in Race 1, Seewer’s performance also did not go unnoticed as he bounced back from his Qualifying Race woes. The ‘91’ made the most of a difficult situation with 18th gate pick and powered his YZ450FM to a top-10 start. Aware that the conditions would push the limits of his race preparation and the stamina of the riders around him, Seewer put in some solid and consistent laps and made some excellent passes on his way to fourth.
The second race was also marked by Vlaanderen’s dominance and sand-riding prowess. The number ‘10’ charged from fourth past Ruben Fernandez and Pauls Jonass to take the lead from Prado on lap 8. From there, the break-out star stormed to another phenomenal race win.
Vlaanderen’s success with a Qualifying Race win followed by two Championship Race wins and the Grand Prix overall in the same weekend comes as a first for Yamaha since Romain Febvre aboard a Monster Energy Yamaha Factory YZ450FM back at the MXGP of Czech Republic in 2019. And as a result, the Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha rider has jumped to ninth in the MXGP Championship Standings. His results this weekend were the first of his career in every way. Previously, his best result was a pair of fourths; both were in 2021, one was here in Riola-Sardo, and one was in Maggiora.
The next round of the FIM Motocross World Championship will be in Madrid, Spain, on the weekend of May 29th.

I just wish my family was here and everyone from back home.” “I think it all started with the week leading up to this, like mentally it’s such a big thing in the sport, especially at this level to believe you can win. And coming to this weekend, I honestly believed for the first time in my career, I can win it. And it’s such a nice feeling, just confidence and it showed today that I could do it”.
