MONACO (Principato di Monaco) 4 maggio 2022 – Il settimo round del Campionato Mondiale FIM Motocross torna questo fine settimana al leggendario Maggiora Park per il MXGP d’Italia.
La scorsa stagione, Maggiora Park ha fatto il suo tanto atteso ritorno nel calendario MXGP, dopo aver chiuso i battenti alla fine del 2016. In quel periodo, il noto circuito italiano è stato rianimato e ha fatto il suo ritorno nel Campionato del Mondo, reintroducendo un amato vecchio- circuito tradizionale della scuola con alcuni tocchi modernizzati.
La pista collinare con sede nel nord Italia ha una ricca storia avendo ospitato numerosi eventi del Campionato Mondiale di Motocross FIM dalla fine degli anni ’60, tra cui il più memorabile Motocross delle Nazioni FIM Monster Energy del 1970, 1986 e 2016.
Statistiche e fatti di Maggiora:
- Primo GP ospitato nel 1966 e vinto da Paul Friedrichs
- Presentatore del leggendario Monster Energy FIM MXoN del 1970, 1986 e 2016
- 10 GP ospitati in totale dal 1966 – quest’anno sarà l’11 ° !
- Jeffrey Herlings ha vinto il maggior numero di GP a Maggiora di qualsiasi altro pilota (3 – 2013, 2014 e 2021)
Ad unirsi ai piloti MXGP e MX2 questo fine settimana ci saranno le categorie EMX con i round tre e quattro dei campionati EMX250 ed EMX Open . Nella EMX250, dopo due round Rick Elzinga dell’Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing guida il campionato con 93 punti su Cornelius Toendel del Fantic Factory Team Maddii e Oriol Oliver di WZ Racing . Elzinga ha vinto entrambi i primi due round in Lombardia e Portogallo, quindi sarà interessante vedere se riuscirà a portare avanti la sua serie di vittorie o se un nuovo pilota sarà all’altezza della situazione.
Nel frattempo in EMX Open, solo un punto separa Michael Sandner e Jose Butron di Raths Motorsports dal JD Gunnex KTM Racing Team nella classifica del campionato, dopo che il DNF di Sandner in gara uno al round lettone lo ha visto in pericolo di perdere la tabella rossa. Butron entrerà nel round italiano dopo la sua prima vittoria assoluta della stagione, quindi sarà interessante vedere se riuscirà a ripetere il suo successo e prendere il controllo della serie.

Mentre ci avviciniamo al settimo round della serie, è arrivata la notizia che il campione del mondo in carica Jeffrey Herlings della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rimarrà fuori per il resto della stagione. Herlings sarà sottoposto a due interventi correttivi e concentrerà invece i suoi sforzi sull’essere pronto per il 2023. Nel frattempo non ci sono ancora notizie su Romain Febvre del Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP e sul suo ritorno.
Al momento Tim Gajser del Team HRC è nella stagione di guida del campionato e dopo la perfetta scorecard in Lettonia lo scorso fine settimana e la sua quinta vittoria stagionale in GP, lo sloveno cercherà di continuare la sua serie di vittorie e ottenere un risultato molto più positivo questa volta a Maggiora, rispetto al punteggio di 5-6 dello scorso anno per il settimo posto assoluto.
Gajser aveva già vinto a Maggiora nel 2015 anche se questo era in MX2, e deve ancora vincere nella categoria MXGP sulla pista in collina. Allo stato attuale, Gajser è attualmente in testa a tutte le statistiche finora in termini di pole position, giri guidati, vittorie in gare, vittorie in GP e podi, quindi averlo come uno dei principali contendenti per la vittoria questo fine settimana non sarebbe così sorprendente.
Ovviamente, il suo più vicino rivale per il titolo e il pilota che lo segue in tutte queste statistiche è Jorge Prado della Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing . Prado cercherà di riprendersi dopo un fine settimana disastroso a Kegums. Un 12 ° e 13 ° posto in gara hanno visto Prado ora scendere a 66 punti dietro Gajser, quindi per lo spagnolo servirà il massimo dei punti per non perdere il controllo sulla sua possibilità di competere per il suo primo campionato MXGP.

Alla fine Jonass ha confermato di aver bisogno di “tenere i piedi per terra”, decisione molto matura del lettone, per ottenere un risultato solido piuttosto che rischiare tutto. Ora che ha avuto un fine settimana di gara in cui ha lottato costantemente con i leader del campionato, questo dovrebbe dargli fiducia per il resto dell’anno e sarà interessante vedere come può continuare a farlo.
Glenn Coldenhoff di Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing è stato tra i tre piloti che erano a pari punti per la vittoria del GP della scorsa stagione a Maggiora. L’olandese ha chiuso con 40 punti insieme a Jeffrey Herlings e Antonio Cairoli della Red KTM Factory Racing, con la vittoria di Herlings in gara due che alla fine ha annullato i punteggi degli altri due piloti. Avere quei ricordi sarà un bonus per Coldenhoff, che sta costruendo per un podio in questa stagione e ha un aspetto forte sin dal Portogallo, dove ha vinto la gara di qualificazione e da allora è stato vicino a un posto ai box.
Anche i suoi compagni di squadra Maxime Renaux e Jeremy Seewer sono stati costantemente nella mischia all’estremità acuta. Anche se quando si tratta di guardare i numeri, Renaux è attualmente il pilota di maggior successo della squadra in questa stagione, se misuriamo il “successo” in base al podio, che il francese ne ha tre rispetto a quello di Seewer. Seewer ha anche rivelato di aver lottato in Lettonia, così come Renaux, quindi sarebbe bello vedere la coppia tornare in cima questa volta.
Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez è un pilota da tenere d’occhio questo fine settimana. Lo spagnolo si è assicurato il suo primo podio MXGP della sua carriera in Lettonia, andando 3-4 per il terzo posto assoluto. Ora sarà interessante vedere se quel primo podio cambierà qualcosa per Fernandez e se potrà seguirne di più.
Arminas Jasikonis di Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing è nella lista degli iscritti per il Gran Premio d’Italia e si spera possa tornare dopo aver saltato gli ultimi quattro GP. Guardando l’attuale entry list, tornerà alle corse anche Alessandro Lupino di Beta SDM Corse
A fare la wild card per questo GP sarà David Philippaerts , un habitué quando si tratta di correre i GP d’Italia.
Il pilota di casa Alberto Forato dell’SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery cercherà di mettere a segno le sue migliori prestazioni sul suolo di casa e continuare a fornire gli ottimi risultati che ha mostrato finora. Attualmente è nono nella classifica del campionato, il che è piuttosto impressionante. Ci sono un bel po’ di italiani a cui prestare attenzione in generale questo fine settimana, inclusi Nicholas Lapucci e Filippo Zonta del Fantic Factory Team Maddii tra molti altri che saranno wildcard questo fine settimana.

Nella MX2 le cose si stanno facendo interessanti in testa alla classifica del campionato quando Jago Geerts della Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing ha ripreso la tabella rossa in Lettonia con una netta vittoria per 1-1, anche se rimane a pari punti con Tom Vialle della Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. Quindi, è tornato al punto di partenza per la coppia, dato che sostanzialmente iniziano da zero, il che dovrebbe creare delle gare molto interessanti.
Quello che sarebbe bello vedere questo fine settimana è qualcosa di speciale da Mattia Guadagnini della Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing. La scorsa stagione Guadagnini ha vissuto un weekend da sogno a Maggiora, vincendo una gara e poi vincendo il GP (il suo primo in assoluto e in casa) oltre a prendere la tabella rossa! Ovviamente, le aspettative saranno alte questo fine settimana, dato che l’italiano deve ancora salire sul podio quest’anno e questo fine settimana potrebbe essere la sua migliore opportunità per farlo.
Il secondo pilota della Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing Simon Längenfelder è attualmente terzo in campionato, agli stessi punti di Kay de Wolf di Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing e di Mikkel Haarup di Kawasaki Big Van World MTX MTX . Dal suo podio in Gran Bretagna, Längenfelder è andato vicino ai vincitori, ma ultimamente è la costanza a deluderlo. Nel frattempo, anche de Wolf ha ottenuto dei risultati molto solidi quest’anno, è salito sul podio due volte ma ha anche disputato un paio di gare, dove la costanza è stata il motivo per cui ha mancato di poco un posto sul podio. Ad ogni modo, sia Längenfelder che de Wolf sono ancora una coppia da tenere d’occhio questo fine settimana.
Nel frattempo Haarup ha avuto un weekend difficile in Lettonia dopo che un’inevitabile caduta, sull’atterraggio di un salto in cui era già caduto un altro pilota, lo ha portato fuori dalla corsa per il suo quarto podio consecutivo. Prima di allora, Haarup stava correndo bene e si era presentato come una vera minaccia nella parte acuta, quindi si spera che possa riprendersi questo fine settimana e vedere l’inizio di un’altra serie di podi.
Kevin Horgmo dell’F&H Kawasaki Racing ha avuto un weekend quasi perfetto a Kegums e ha continuato il successo del team in Lettonia, assicurandosi il suo primo podio nella MX2 con il secondo posto assoluto. Horgmo ha condotto ben 11 giri della seconda gara, prima di essere catturato da Geerts, tuttavia, il norvegese ha dimostrato di essere abbastanza veloce, in forma e, soprattutto, abbastanza fiducioso per guidare le gare, il che è di per sé un enorme aumento di fiducia. Sarà interessante vedere cosa ha in serbo la prossima gara e se il risultato di Kegums sarà come un trampolino di lancio per Horgmo per il resto della stagione.
Il GP d’Italia di questo fine settimana sarà anche un appuntamento casalingo per Andrea Adamo dell’SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery . Dal suo podio a Mantova, Adamo ha lottato per mettere insieme due risultati coerenti. Anche il mancato punteggio in gara due all’MXGP del Trentino non ha aiutato la sua classifica generale visto che attualmente è 8° dietro Guadagnini. Un GP di casa di solito è speciale per qualsiasi pilota, quindi si spera che quella spinta in più di motivazione per esibirsi bene in casa vedrà Adamo combattere ancora una volta con i leader.
Nella lista degli iscritti c’è anche Gianluca Facchetti del Team Beddini Racing KTM , insieme a un altro pilota locale Daniel Gimm che farà un’apparizione wildcard questo fine settimana.

Maggiora Awaits MXGP Action for Italian Grand Prix
MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 4 May 2022 – The seventh round of the FIM Motocross World Championship is heading back to the legendary Maggiora Park this weekend for the MXGP of Italy.
Last season, Maggiora Park made its much-anticipated return to the MXGP calendar, after closing its doors in late 2016. In that time, the well-known Italian circuit was revived and made its World Championship return, re-introducing a beloved old-school traditional circuit with some modernised touches.
The hillside track based in the north of Italy has a rich history having hosted numerous FIM Motocross World Championship events since the late 60’s, including the most memorable 1970, 1986 and 2016 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.
Maggiora stats & facts:
- First GP hosted in 1966 and was won by Paul Friedrichs
- Host of the legendary 1970, 1986 & 2016 Monster Energy FIM MXoN
- 10 GP’s hosted in total since 1966 – this year will be the 11th!
- Jeffrey Herlings has won the most GPs in Maggiora than any other rider (3 – 2013, 2014 & 2021)
Joining the MXGP and MX2 riders this weekend will be the EMX categories with rounds three and four of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championships. In EMX250, after two rounds Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga leads the championship with 93 points over Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel and Oriol Oliver of WZ Racing. Elzinga has won both of the first two rounds in Lombardia and Portugal, so it will be interesting to see if he can carry on his winning streak, or whether a new rider will rise to the occasion.
Meanwhile in EMX Open, just a point separates Raths Motorsports’ Michael Sandner and Jose Butron from JD Gunnex KTM Racing Team in the championship standings, after Sandner’s DNF in race one at the Latvian round saw him in danger of losing the red plate. Butron will enter the Italian round following his first overall victory of the season, so it will be interesting to see whether he can repeat his success and take control of the series.
As we head into round seven of the series, news broke that defending world champion Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will sit out the remainder of the season. Herlings will undergo two corrective surgeries and will instead focus his efforts on being ready for 2023. Meanwhile there is still no news on Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre and his return.
At the moment Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is in the driving season of the championship and after the perfect scorecard in Latvia last weekend and his fifth GP win of the season, the Slovenian will be looking to continue his winning streak and deliver a much more positive result this time around in Maggiora, compared to last year’s 5-6 scorecard for seventh overall.
Gajser has previously won in Maggiora back in 2015 though this was in MX2, and he is yet to win in the MXGP category at the hillside venue. As it stands, Gajser currently leads all of the stats so far in terms of pole positions, laps led, race wins, GP victories and podiums, therefore having him as a top contender for the win this weekend wouldn’t be that surprising.
Of course, his closest title rival and the rider who follows him in all of those stats is Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado. Prado will be looking to bounce back after a disastrous weekend in Kegums. A 12th and 13th in the races saw Prado now drop to 66 points behind Gajser, so maximum points will be needed for the Spaniard in order to not lose grip on his chance to go for his first MXGP championship.
Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass will enter the Italian Grand Prix off the back of a very successful weekend on home soil that saw him battle at the front of the field and challenging Gajser for race wins on his way to his first podium of 2022. In the end Jonass confirmed he needed to “keep his feet on the ground” which was a very mature decision by the Latvian, in order to deliver a solid result rather than risk it all. Now having had a race weekend where he was consistently fighting with the championship leaders, this should give him confidence for the rest of the year and it will be interesting to see how he can follow up with that.
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff was among the three riders that were tied on points for the GP victory last season in Maggiora. The Dutchman finished on 40 points alongside Red KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli, with Herlings’ race two victory eventually overruling the scores of the other two riders. Having those memories will be a bonus for Coldenhoff who has been building for a podium finish this season and has been looking strong ever since Portugal where he won the qualifying race and has been close to a spot on the box ever since.
His teammates Maxime Renaux and Jeremy Seewer have also been in the mix at the sharp end consistently. Though when it comes to looking at the numbers, Renaux is currently the most successful rider on the team this season, if we measure ‘success’ by podium finishes, which the Frenchman has three under his belt compared to Seewer’s one. Seewer also revealed that he struggled in Latvia, as did Renaux, so it would be good to see the pair back at the top this time around.
Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez is a rider to watch this weekend. The Spaniard secured his first MXGP podium of his career in Latvia, going 3-4 for third overall. Now it will be interesting to see if that first podium will change anything for Fernandez and whether he can follow up with more.
Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis is on the entry list for the Italian Grand Prix and will hopefully make his come back after missing the last four GPs. Looking at the current entry list, Beta SDM Corse’s Alessandro Lupino will also return to racing
Making a wildcard appearance for this GP will be David Philippaerts who is a usual regular when it comes to racing the Italian GP’s.
Home rider Alberto Forato of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery will be looking to put on his best performance on home soil and continue delivering the strong results that he has been showing so far. He currently sits ninth in the championship standings which is pretty impressive. There are quite a few Italians to watch out for in general this weekend including Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Nicholas Lapucci and Filippo Zonta among quite a few others who will wildcard this weekend.

In MX2 things are getting interesting at the top of the championship standings as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts took back the red plate in Latvia with a clean 1-1 overall victory, though he remains tied on points with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle. So, it’s back to square one for the pair, as they basically start from zero, which should make for some very interesting racing.
In Latvia, Geerts was on top of his game and keen on making up for lost ground in Trentino where a DNF saw him lose the championship lead. Meanwhile, Vialle struggled to find his rhythm all weekend long in Kegums, so will be looking to bring his A game this weekend and take maximum points. Last year the MXGP of Italy was not the best for Vialle, who after getting injured a few weeks prior, only managed a few laps of the races.
What would be nice to see this weekend is something special from Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini. Last season, Guadagnini had a dream weekend in Maggiora, winning a race and then subsequently winning the GP (his very first one and on home soil) as well as taking the red plate! Of course, expectations are going to be high this weekend, as the Italian is yet to finish on the podium this year and this weekend could be his best opportunity to do it.
The second Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing rider Simon Längenfelder is currently third in the championship, sitting on the same points as Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf and Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup. Since his podium in Great Britain, Längenfelder has come close to the podium, but consistency its what’s letting him down lately. Meanwhile, de Wolf has also had some very solid results this year, he’s been on the podium twice but has also had a couple of races, where consistency was the reason why he narrowly missed out on a spot on the box. Either way both Längenfelder and de Wolf are still a pair to watch out for this weekend.
Meanwhile Haarup had a tough weekend in Latvia after an unavoidable crash, on a landing of a jump where another rider had already fallen, took him out of the running for his fourth consecutive podium. Before that, Haarup was running well and had presented himself as a real threat at the sharp end, so hopefully he can bounce back this weekend and see the beginning of another podium streak.
F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo had a near perfect weekend in Kegums and continued the team’s success in Latvia, securing his first podium in MX2 with second overall. Horgmo led an impressive 11 laps of the second race, before getting caught by Geerts, nonetheless, the Norwegian showed that he is fast enough, fit enough and most importantly confident enough to lead races which is a huge confidence boost in itself. It will be interesting to see what the next race has in store and whether the result in Kegums will be like a springboard for Horgmo for the rest of the season.
The Italian GP this weekend will also be a home round for SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Andrea Adamo. Since his podium in Mantova, Adamo has struggled to put together two consistent results. Also not scoring points in race two at the MXGP of Trentino didn’t help his overall standings as he currently sits in 8th behind Guadagnini. A home GP is usually special for any rider, so hopefully that extra boost of motivation to perform well on home soil will see Adamo fighting with the leaders once again.
