Kevin Benavides rinuncerà alla corona al traguardo dopo che una meccanica lo ha costretto al ritiro dalla tappa 10. È il primo motociclista a fare i conti con la speciale di chiusura della 44a Dakar. Sam Sunderland, suo compagno di squadra con la formazione austriaca e attuale leader della classifica generale, sarà il prossimo tra tre minuti. Solo una sorpresa dell’ultimo minuto può ora negare al britannico la sua seconda vittoria alla Dakar.

Ce l’ha fatta. A 32 anni, Sam Sunderland ha conquistato il suo secondo titolo Dakar cinque anni dopo il suo primo trionfo nel 2017. È il primo per GasGas, che lo ha reclutato all’undicesima ora lo scorso dicembre. Si tratta di un sollievo per gli austriaci, il costruttore dietro il marchio rosso, che ha strappato la corona alla Honda dopo due anni. Pablo Quintanilla ha ottenuto il secondo posto per HRC e Matthias Walkner rappresenterà KTM sul gradino più basso del podio. Quarto nella classifica virtuale all’ultimo controllo del tempo, Adrien Van Beveren sembra destinato a finire appena fuori dai primi 3.

Sunderland ha tagliato il traguardo dopo 164 km. Il pilota della GasGas era ancora al comando della classifica generale al precedente controllo cronometraggio (km 120), 4’32’ davanti a Quintanilla, che guadagnava 5′, e Walkner, che aveva ancora 7’14’ di svantaggio pur recuperando 45 ‘. Sunderland sta cercando bene per il gradino più alto del podio a Jeddah!

A 81 km dall’inizio della speciale, circa a metà della sezione cronometrata di 164 km, Sam Sunderland (GasGas) è seduto al quarto posto, a 2’16’ dal suo rivale più vicino in classifica generale, Pablo Quintanilla. Il pilota Honda è in testa alla speciale, ma l’inglese ha ancora 4’36’ di vantaggio nella classifica virtuale. Matthias Walkner (KTM), quinto a 3 minuti da Quintanilla, era a 7’59’ dal leader virtuale della Dakar. Van Beveren deve ancora raggiungere questa parte della tappa dopo essere partito al quindicesimo posto.

Pablo Quintanilla, secondo assoluto, 6 minuti dietro Sam Sunderland, ha superato il primo controllo del tempo al primo posto con 41 secondi in mano sul compagno di squadra Ricky Brabec. Sunderland era terzo a più di un minuto indietro. Nacho Cornejo è alle calcagna del britannico, appena davanti al duo KTM composto da Kevin Benavides e Matthias Walkner, che sta già cedendo 2′42″ a Quintanilla. Toby Price e Adrien Van Beveren sono due dei tanti motociclisti che devono ancora raggiungere il WP1.

Mason Klein è il debuttante più in classifica. L’americano si trova al nono posto assoluto, a oltre 50 minuti da Sam Sunderland. Il ventenne è salito sul podio della fase 3 e ha fatto girare la testa al suo debutto nel raid di rally più duro della Terra. Non diversamente da Daniel Sanders, che ha rubato la scena alla sua prima partecipazione l’anno scorso e ha lottato per i massimi riconoscimenti in questa edizione prima di ritirarsi a causa di un infortunio, Klein sarà un uomo da tenere d’occhio nel 2023.

Benjamin Melot ha ottenuto la sua quinta vittoria di tappa nella categoria Original by Motul per motociclisti senza supporto al termine della tappa 11. Il francese rimane terzo assoluto, 20 minuti dietro Milan Engel. Il leader Arūnas Gelažninkas dovrebbe completare con successo una difesa del titolo.

He did it. At 32 years old, Sam Sunderland claimed his second Dakar title five years after his first triumph in 2017. It is a first for GasGas, which recruited him at the eleventh hour last December. It comes as a relief for the Austrians, the constructor behind the red brand, who wrested the crown back from Honda after two years. Pablo Quintanilla took second place for HRC and Matthias Walkner will represent KTM on the bottom step of the podium. Fourth in the virtual classification at the last time check, Adrien Van Beveren looks set to finish just outside the top 3.

Sunderland is looking good for the top step of the podium in Jeddah!

The fifteenth rider out of the starting blocks, Adrien van Beveren, was tenth at km 81, 4’24’ down on Quintanilla. Halfway through the special, he remains fourth overall, 17’38’ behind the leader, Sunderland. Further ahead, Benavides has entered the final 10 km, while the Englishman, poised to take his second title, has reached km 120. The Frenchman’s already long odds seem to be getting even longer.

81 km into the special, roughly halfway through the 164 km timed section, Sam Sunderland (GasGas) is sitting in fourth place, 2’16’ behind his closest rival in the general standings, Pablo Quintanilla. The Honda rider is leading the special, but the Englishman still has 4’36’ to spare in the virtual standings. Matthias Walkner (KTM), fifth at 3 minutes down on Quintanilla, was 7’59’ behind the virtual leader of the Dakar. Van Beveren has yet to reach this part of the stage after starting in fifteenth place.

Pablo Quintanilla, second overall, 6 minutes behind Sam Sunderland, went through the first time check in first place with 41 seconds in hand over teammate Ricky Brabec. Sunderland was third at over a minute back. Nacho Cornejo is hot on the Brit’s heels, just ahead of the KTM duo of Kevin Benavides and Matthias Walkner, who is already conceding 2′42″ to Quintanilla. Toby Price and Adrien Van Beveren are two of many bikers who have yet to reach WP1.

Mason Klein is the top-ranked rookie. The American sits in ninth place overall, over 50 minutes down on Sam Sunderland. The 20-year-old finished on the podium of stage 3 and turned heads in his debut in the toughest rally raid on Earth. Not unlike Daniel Sanders, who stole the show in his first participation last year and fought for the top honours in this edition before withdrawing due to injury, Klein will be a man to watch in 2023.

Benjamin Melot picked up his fifth stage win in the Original by Motul category for bikers without support at the end of stage 11. The French remains third overall, 20 minutes behind Milan Engel. Leader Arūnas Gelažninkas is set to complete a successful title defence.

Kevin Benavides will be relinquishing his crown at the finish after a mechanical forced him to withdraw from stage 10. He is the first biker to get to grips with the closing special of the 44th Dakar. Sam Sunderland, his teammate in the Austrian outfit and current overall leader, will be next in three minutes’ time. Only a last-minute surprise can now deny the Brit his second Dakar victory.
