Nacho Cornejo è stato il primo motociclista ad iniziare la decima speciale. Il Cileno, che è stato lasciato in colpa per il suo errore nella fase di apertura, è settimo assoluto, a più di mezz’ora da Matthias Walkner. Riuscirà a vincere la sfida aprendo la strada e restringere quel disavario?

10:25 Moto: Barreda limita i danni mentre Price risponde
Al km 257 della speciale, Joan Barreda, ancora alle prese con una spalla infortunata, ha guadagnato un minuto rispetto al precedente cronometro e ora è sotto di 4′22″. Toby Price è risalito lentamente ma costantemente dopo essere partito dal diciassettesimo posto. L’australiano era a soli 22 secondi dal ritmo al km 212… Poteva essere il primo al prossimo checkpoint?

A 212 km dall’inizio della gara, Sam Sunderland mantiene ancora il secondo posto nella classifica generale virtuale di 40′ su Pablo Quintanilla. Il cileno difende l’onore della Honda. A 1’29’ dal leader, Matthias Walkner si sta comportando abbastanza bene in testa alla gara.

Joan Barreda sta perdendo oltre 5 minuti dopo la neutralizzazione, ma Cornejo sta facendo ancora peggio a oltre 17 minuti di ritardo! Una noia meccanica con 133 km nella speciale ha costretto Kevin Benavides a ritirarsi e a mettere a frutto le sue prospettive di difesa del titolo. Dopo GasGas e Husqvarna, le altre squadre schierate dalla factory di Mattighoffen, tocca alla KTM perdere un pilota. Matthias Walkner, l’unico motociclista KTM ancora in lizza, sta perdendo 1’32’ contro Joan Barreda al km 170.

Joan Barreda è in testa alla tappa al km 84, seguito dal suo compagno di squadra Nacho Cornejo e Kevin Benavides, che precipiteranno in classifica al prossimo checkpoint. A 85 km dall’inizio della speciale, Pablo Quintanilla e Adrien Van Beveren sono al terzo posto nella classifica generale virtuale! Il cileno ha recuperato 45 secondi sul francese al checkpoint, esattamente lo stesso tempo che lo separava questa mattina.

Sam Sunderland ha appena superato il WP1 con uno svantaggio di 15 secondi contro Maciej Giemza. Sulla scia del motociclista GasGas, Toby Price non ha altra scelta che dare il massimo se vuole vincere la Dakar a titolo definitivo per la terza volta.

Melot è ora a circa 20 minuti dal ceco e può contemplare un assalto sul gradino centrale del podio. Arūnas Gelažninkas mantiene ancora il vantaggio di quasi 55 minuti su Engel.

257 km into the special, Joan Barreda, who is still nursing an injured shoulder, has gained a minute compared to the previous time check and is now 4′22″ down. Toby Price has been moving up the field slowly but steadily after starting in seventeenth place. The Australian was just 22 seconds off the pace at km 212… Could he be first at the next checkpoint?

Joan Barreda is losing over 5 minutes after the neutralisation, but Cornejo is doing even worse at over 17 minutes down! Pablo Quintanilla now leads with a minute and a half to spare over Matthias Walkner and sits in third place in the virtual overall, but a win today could put him in a difficult starting position tomorrow. Meanwhile, Walkner is riding conservatively and losing very little time to some of his adversaries despite opening the road.

Maciej Giemsa is still holding his own among the factory riders. The Pole is fourth on the road, one second clear of Toby Price and two ahead of Matthias Walkner.

A mechanical 133 km into the special has forced Kevin Benavides to withdraw and put paid to his title defence prospects. After GasGas and Husqvarna, the other teams fielded by the factory in Mattighoffen, it is KTM’s turn to lose a rider. Matthias Walkner, the only KTM biker still in contention, is currently losing 1’32’ to Joan Barreda at km 170.

Joan Barreda is leading the stage at km 84, followed by his teammate Nacho Cornejo and Kevin Benavides, who will plummet down the standings at the next checkpoint. The other Benavides, Luciano, is 19 seconds back in fourth place. Sam Sunderland started in 14th place and is conceding just under a minute to Barreda.

Kevin Benavides’s bike has broken down. The Argentinian started the day in fifth place overall, 10’22’ down on the leader and 30′ ahead of Joan Barreda. These two riders in the middle reaches of the top 10 were fighting hard to place themselves on the podium. It’s a crushing blow!

The two leaders are 7 seconds clear of defending champion Kevin Benavides and 12 ahead of Matthias Walkner, but watch out for Sam Sunderland, who has yet to reach WP1.

Benjamin Melot claimed his third consecutive stage win in the Original by Motul category yesterday. The Frenchman put 3 minutes into Charan Moore and 8 into Mário Patrão, but even more importantly, more than 10 into Milan Engel, second overall. Melot is now within about 20 minutes of the Czech and can contemplate an assault on the middle step of the podium. Arūnas Gelažninkas still holds the lead by close to 55 minutes over Engel.
