Daniel Sanders avrebbe dovuto aprire il palco ad Ad-Dawadimi questa mattina, ma non si è fatto vivo all’inizio. Il vincitore delle fasi 1 e 6 sembra essersi schiantato durante il collegamento. Le prime segnalazioni sono rassicuranti e parlano di un infortunio al braccio sinistro. Ha ricevuto assistenza immediata ed è stato portato in ospedale. È un duro colpo per GasGas, che ora dipende da un solo uomo, Sam Sunderland, proprio come Husqvarna dopo il ritiro di Skyler Howes. L’arduo compito di aprire la strada ora ricade sul britannico.

Al km 299, a tre quarti dalla speciale di oggi, Cornejo ha ancora il controllo con 1’18’ su Kevin Benavides, 3’09’ su Barreda e 5’37’ su Santolino. Van Beveren è sotto di 9’03’, ma i suoi diretti concorrenti per la classifica generale sono molto indietro, con Walkner a 22’09’ e Sunderland e 25’17’. VBA è ancora in testa virtuale. Questo potrebbe essere il primo grande cambiamento della seconda settimana.

Maciej Giemza e Jan Brabec hanno percorso il km 298, tre quarti di percorso, al 12° e 13° posto, battendo un biker del calibro di Quintanilla! Solo Xavier de Soultrait, che era un pilota ufficiale, è davanti a questi due tra i concorrenti puri privati che si scontrano con i professionisti.

VBA e Yamaha non sono le uniche a trarre vantaggio dalla tappa 7. Santolini di Sherco è salito al secondo posto nella classifica generale virtuale al km 259, 7′13″ dietro al francese. Walkner è dietro al leader di 8′02″, seguito da Sunderland a 8′31″ e Benavides a 9′28″. Abbiamo un francese al primo posto e una francese al secondo!

Partito dal 22° posto questa mattina, Cornejo ha ribaltato la gerarchia degli ultimi tre checkpoint. A 259 km dall’inizio della tappa, guida la speciale con 1’03’ su Benavides, 2’55’ su Barreda, 4’22’ su Luciano Benavides e Xavier de Soultrait a 4’34’, 5 secondi su Toby Price. Santolino è a 5 minuti dal leader e Brabec è a 5’52’.
Nel frattempo, Adrien Van Beveren sta facendo un colpo in classifica generale! È 12° a 7’27’, abbastanza da recuperare 12’15’ su Walkner e 15’22’ su Sunderland, portando il francese in vantaggio virtuale in questo momento. Sono quasi 150 km da qui ad Ad-Dawadimi.

Dopo essere partito al quinto posto questa mattina, Brabec apre la speciale con il compagno di squadra Quintanilla, che tre minuti dopo è scattato e aveva lo stesso svantaggio al CP3. In altre parole, Ricky ha raggiunto Pablo e i motociclisti Honda stanno lavorando come una squadra. Il campione della Dakar 2020 e secondo classificato nel 2021 ha iniziato la giornata con 49 minuti di svantaggio rispetto al leader assoluto. In una ripetizione dello scenario dell’anno scorso, Brabec cercherà di rimettersi in gioco e di raddrizzare la nave oggi e domani.

I primi motociclisti hanno raggiunto il CP3, a 220 chilometri dall’inizio della gara. Kevin Benavides ha messo 24″ su Brabec, 43″, 1′57″ su suo fratello, 1′32″ su Walkner e 1′57″ su Barreda. Il costruttore italiano ha presentato la sua 450 XEF Rally basata su Yamaha all’EICMA. Due volte secondo (1988 e 1989) e cinque volte tra i primi 5 della Dakar tra il 1985 e il 1990, Picco ha 10 vittorie di tappa.

Xavier de Soultrait ha fatto una forte impressione l’anno scorso portando la sua Husqvarna privata in testa alla classifica generale prima di cadere e ferirsi nella tappa 8. Il francese, selezionato come potenziale copilota di Sébastien Loeb in questa Dakar, ha finalmente scelto di riprovaci sulle due ruote, sempre con HT Rally. Sta andando alla tappa 7 al 14° posto assoluto, a 47 minuti da Sam Sunderland, e come il terzo motociclista privato in classifica, dietro a Štefan Svitko e al debuttante Mason Klein.

Ancora inseguendo il suo primo podio alla Dakar, Joan Barreda ha stretto i denti per concludere la speciale tappa 5 di 101 km dopo essersi infortunato alla spalla in un incidente. Il dolore non ha dissuaso ‘Bang Bang’, che ha raggiunto la giornata di riposo prima del campione in carica Kevin Benavides, dall’inizio dello speciale di oggi. È un uomo da tenere d’occhio di sicuro!

At km 299, three quarters into today’s special, Cornejo is still in control by 1’18’ over Kevin Benavides, 3’09’ over Barreda and 5’37’ over Santolino. After starting in fifth place this morning, Brabec is opening the special with his teammate Quintanilla, who got going three minutes later and had the same deficit at CP3. Joan Barreda seems to be overcoming his shoulder injury. The Spaniard went through the second time check (km 77) in third place, 11 seconds behind Toby Price. Kevin Benavides is still second at 8 seconds, while Ricky Brabec and Matthias Walkner are a bit further back but still within half a minute.

The Italian constructor presented its Yamaha-based 450 XEF Rally at the EICMA show. Twice second (1988 and 1989) and five times in the top 5 of the Dakar between 1985 and 1990, Picco has 10 stage wins to his name.

Xavier de Soultrait made a strong impression last year by taking his private Husqvarna to the top of the general standings before crashing and injuring himself in stage 8. The Frenchman, shortlisted as a potential co-driver for Sébastien Loeb in this Dakar, finally chose to give it another go on two wheels, again with HT Rally. He is going into stage 7 in 14th place overall, 47 minutes down on Sam Sunderland, and as the third-ranked private biker, behind Štefan Svitko and rookie Mason Klein.

Still chasing his first Dakar podium finish, Joan Barreda clenched his teeth to wrap up the 101 km stage 5 special after hurting his shoulder in a crash. The pain has not deterred ‘Bang Bang’, who reached the rest day ahead of defending champion Kevin Benavides, from starting today’s special. He is a man to watch for sure!

Daniel Sanders was supposed to open the stage to Ad-Dawadimi this morning, but he did not show up at the start. The winner of stages 1 and 6 appears to have crashed in the liaison. The first reports are reassuring and speak of an injured left arm. He received immediate assistance and has been taken to hospital. It is a crushing blow for GasGas, which is now down to just one man, Sam Sunderland, just like Husqvarna after Skyler Howes’s withdrawal. The arduous task of opening the way now falls upon the Brit.
