12:05 Moto: Sanders viene annullato

07:55 Chi giocherà in modo intelligente?

  1. 18:15 Moto: Tough times for Barreda

Yesterday’s winner Joan Barreda also fell from his bike between the 265 and 270 km marks, injuring his shoulder. He is allowing himself until tomorrow morning before deciding whether to carry on with the adventure or not. If “Bang Bang” is forced to withdraw, it will be his sixth premature exit in 12 participations (1 out of 2). In 2021, he had to drop out following a fuel shortage on the penultimate special.

  2. 18:06 Moto: It’s all over for Howes

Skyler Howes came off his bike on the day’s special. The Husqvarna rider hit his head and does not remember anything about his fall, but nevertheless managed to make it to the finishing line. He started feeling unwell immediately after arriving and with ankle and shoulder injuries as well, Howes was taken to hospital by the organisation teams to undergo further examinations. In any event, the American will have to skip the rest of the 44th edition of the Dakar. It is a big blow for Howes, who finished fifth last year and was in eighth place at the beginning of the day’s stage, as well as being the best place Husqvarna rider.

  3. 16:54 Moto: Breaking news: Petrucci wins his very first special!

Toby Price has received a six-minute penalty for speeding so Danilo Petrucci, who finished a little more than four minutes behind the Australian, has won today’s special. The Italian has become the first MotoGP rider to taste victory on a stage of the Dakar.

  4. 13:21 Price in the lead at the finish

Before the race was interrupted, Toby Price proved to be the quickest rider to reach the finishing line on the day’s special. The Australian finished 4’14’’ ahead of rookie Danilo Petrucci who maintained his fine pace. Ross Branch put the leading Yamaha in the race hierarchy in third position, just two seconds behind Petrucci.

  5. 13:20 Interruption to the bike and Dakar Classic races

Faced with great demand placed on the medical aircraft dedicated to the bike race and the Dakar Classic, the race management decided, shortly after midday, to stop the stage in both categories in order to ensure the safety of the competitors. The car race which is taking place in a different sector with independent aircraft resources, has not been affected. The results in the bike and Dakar Classic categories will be adapted to the situation in accordance with the enforceable rules. Several solutions are available to the race officials who are studying them in order to find the fairest for all, both the riders who have completed the bike special and the competitors who are still out on the tracks.

  1. 12:05 Moto: Sanders comes undone

After 310 km, at the last time check point before the finishing line, Daniel Sanders has lost the lead of the stage, dropping down to 17th place, almost 13 minutes from the front. Toby Price has taken the lead, 2’04’’ in front of “Petrux”, 3’01’’ ahead of Cornejo, with Brabec 3’33’’ behind and Branch trailing by 3’50’’.

  1. 10:35 Maio knocking on the door of the top 10

Portugal’s leading off-road biker Antonio Maio, who missed out on the Dakar 2021 due to professional reasons, is back this year. In 11th place after 157 km in front of big hitters like Quintanilla, Short or Van Beveren, the seven times winner and record holder of the Baja Portalegre, who finished 27th on the Dakar in 2020, is aiming for a top 15 place and the unofficial title of leading privateer, though in order to do that, he will have to overhaul Martin, Klein and Petrucci ahead of him.

  2. 10:18 A closely packed top 20

After 157 km, Sanders has regained the lead. Price trails him by 1’10’’, Howes is 1’35’’ behind and Kevin Benavides has swapped the first place achieved at CP 1 for 4th place, 1’42 behind “Chucky”. What’s more, the top 20 closed out by Sam Sunderland is within a time bracket of hardly more than 7 minutes, making it a close-run stage for the moment.

  3. 09:56 Michek in the game

For his 3rd Dakar, Martin Michek from the Orion privateer team occupies 9th place after 80 km of the day’s special. After 23rd place in 2020 and 10th in 2021, the Czech rider is currently 21st in the overall classification. Only two other privateers are ahead of him, namely Svitko and Klein, all three battling among the elite riders in the field.

  4. 09:34 Kevin Benavides moves to the front

Now that Price is underway, the situation is starting to change. Before CP2 after 80 km, Sanders has lost the stage lead to Kevin Benavides by 9 seconds. Howes, Klein, Price, Cornejo, Branch and Brabec are still less than one minute behind the current stage leader. The day promises to be exciting!

  5. 09:24 Price starts fast

Although he was the 27th rider to start, this has not stopped Toby Price from hitting the road running. After 41 km, he has posted the second-best time so far. As a result, the current race hierarchy on today’s special is as follows: Sanders leads, Price is 4’’ behind, Kevin Benavides tails the current stage leader by 15’’ and is followed by Howes, Klein, Branch, Brabec, Cornejo and Petrucci. Mason Klein and “Petrux”, two rookies participating in the Rally2 class, are continuing to impress with their performances, competing with the big hitters!

  6. 09:05 Sanders takes the lead, Price not yet at CP1

Almost all the big hitters have completed 41 km and the riders who were between 15th and 20th to start have taken control. Sanders currently leads in front of Kevin Benavides, Howes, Klein and Branch. However, the times for Toby Price and the two Hero riders, who set off after the first 30 to start, have not yet been registered.

  7. 08:48 Slowly but surely for Gelažninkas

Arunas Gelažninkas, the leading Lithuanian on the Dakar with a 24th place finish in 2019 and the title holder in the Original by Motul category, still leads the unassisted bikers. The Husqvarna representative has gained a further two minutes over Milan Engel, his nearest pursuer in the overall classification. Rookie Charan Moore and Frenchman Benjamain Melot are more than one hour behind.

  8. 08:42 Advantage to the later starters

With Joan Barreda opening the way and already at CP2 after 80 km, at the first time check point, half way in between, the race hierarchy seems to be favouring the riders who started outside the top 5. Brabec leads Walkner, Martin and Sunderland, with all four riders in the same minute. Luciano Benvavides, Barreda, Santolino and Quintanilla, who all started out earlier in that order, all trail by a little less than 2 minutes.

  9. 07:55 Who will play it smart?

Tomorrow, the routes will be reversed: the riders will get to grips with the one tackled by the drivers today. The riders who win today will therefore be able to rely on the tracks left by the drivers and either claw back or gain precious minutes!

  10. 07:45 Barreda kicks off the fifth special

Wednesday’s winner Joan Barreda is logically the first to start out from Riyadh this Thursday. Pablo Quintanilla will follow his team-mate’s tracks ahead of the Sherco duo made up of Rui Gonçalves and Lorenzo Santolino. Sam Sunderland, the overall classification leader, is the sixth rider to start.
