Moto: Rodrigues in prima linea
Dopo la prima vittoria di ieri alla Dakar, Joaquim Rodrigues avrà il difficile compito di aprire la strada. Con Toby Price alle calcagna, sarà una vera e propria sfida. Dovrà vedersela anche con Mason Klein che, grazie a un podio sul palco di martedì alla sua tenera età di 20 anni, spera di ottenere la consacrazione continuando a competere con i grandi battitori. Sam Sunderland e Daniel Sanders hanno anche ammesso di aver guidato in conservativa per evitare di dover interpretare il ruolo di scout oggi. Nella classifica generale, Sunderland guida la danza per soli quattro secondi, ma Adrien Van Beveren, che ha appena festeggiato il suo 31esimo compleanno, potrebbe offrirsi un regalo in ritardo salendo in cima alla classifica di gara.

Joan Barreda ha conquistato la fine del settore cronometrato con il miglior tempo ottenendo la sua seconda vittoria di tappa dell’anno. Lo spagnolo non ha mai mancato di vincere due o più tappe della Dakar dal 2020. Pablo Quintanilla è arrivato secondo, mentre Danilo Petrucci ha conquistato il suo primo podio alla Dakar. Brava, ‘Petrux’!

13:13 Gli Sherco volano sotto il radar
I motociclisti Sherco TVS, Rui Gonçalves e Lorenzo Santolino, hanno messo a segno un’eccezionale prestazione di tag team finendo terzo e quarto nella tappa, rispettivamente a 8 e 9 minuti dal leader. È stata un’uscita solida per la formazione francese, che li mette in una posizione privilegiata per l’ordine di partenza di domani. ‘Santo’, sesto alla Dakar 2021 sulla macchina francese, ha iniziato la giornata nello stesso posto nella classifica generale.

12:25 Barreda in controllo al km 358 mentre gli Shercos sfiorano il podio
Entrando nella parte più difficile della speciale, Joan Barreda rimane in testa con un margine di quasi 5 minuti sul compagno di squadra Pablo Quintanilla. Danilo Petrucci ha un ritardo di oltre 5 minuti al terzo posto. Nel frattempo, Lorenzo Santolino e Rui Gonçalves di Sherco sono passati a poco più di 2 minuti dal podio speciale.

11:22 Dove sono le Yamaha?
A sventolare la bandiera della Yamaha al km 313 è Andrew Short, seppur quasi 13 minuti dietro a Joan Barreda. Guidando al quindicesimo posto, dietro al compagno di squadra Ross Branch, Adrien Van Beveren, che ha iniziato la giornata al secondo posto assoluto dietro Daniel Sanders, sta perdendo 14 minuti.

11:18 Tutto tranquillo sul fronte orientale
I distacchi in testa alla corsa si sono ampliati al km 313. Joan Barreda ha ora 3’33’ di vantaggio su Danilo Petrucci e poco più di 4 minuti su Pablo Quintanilla. Lorenzo Santolino e Rui Gonçalves, entrambi in sella a moto Sherco 450 SEF Rally, completano l’attuale top 5. Nel frattempo, Daniel Sanders è in difficoltà a oltre 12 minuti da Barreda!

10:29 Barreda apre un piccolo varco
A pochi chilometri dai 200 km (nemmeno a metà della speciale!), Joan Barreda tiene le redini con 44” in mano su Danilo Petrucci, che tiene duro. Pablo Quintanilla completa la top 3 a 1′48″. Rui Gonçalves ha superato Sam Sunderland ed è ora proprio dietro il suo compagno di squadra ufficiale della Sherco, Lorenzo Santolino.

Joan Barreda ha finalmente superato Danilo Petrucci al km 158. Lo spagnolo ora precede l’italiano di soli sette secondi. Pablo Quintanilla rimane terzo a 1′44″, mentre Lorenzo Santolino sventola la bandiera per Sherco al quarto posto, davanti a Sam Sunderland e al suo stesso compagno di squadra Rui Gonçalves.

Danilo Petrucci tiene ancora le redini nell’approccio finale alla neutralizzazione, ma Joan Barreda è entrato a breve distanza. Lo spagnolo è ora a soli 16 secondi dall’ex pilota della MotoGP. Nel frattempo, Pablo Quintanilla è sbiadito un po’ dietro Barreda.

Pablo Quintanilla, che è passato dalla Husqvarna alla Honda, ha vinto il Rallye du Maroc e corre alla Dakar con gli occhi puntati sul primo premio. Il cileno ha segnato il terzo tempo al secondo cronometro, 1′28″ dietro Danilo Petrucci e poco meno di un minuto sul compagno di squadra Barreda.

Martin Michek, il terzo miglior rookie del 2020, ha superato il primo tempo al quinto posto, 1′12″ su Danilo Petrucci. Il ceco era al settimo cielo per essere arrivato 13° martedì (nonostante abbia dovuto indossare due giacche a causa del freddo), quando era di poco più di 5 minuti più lento del vincitore.

Ieri ‘Petrux’ ha giocato la sua carta vincente per rimanere in gara e ora sta dimostrando di meritare di continuare la Dakar. L’italiano ha segnato il miglior tempo al primo controllo del tempo intermedio, 20 secondi davanti a Joan Barreda, il grande perdente della tappa 3, in cui ha concesso poco più di 10 minuti. Pablo Quintanilla è terzo a 52 secondi e Sam Sunderland quarto a 1 minuto.

Toby Price è sotto di 4′37″ rispetto al miglior tempo provvisorio di Daniel Sanders al secondo cronometro. Il vincitore di ieri, Joaquim Rodrigues, è ancora più indietro a quasi otto minuti.

Daniel Sanders, che ieri ha perso apposta tempo per evitare di dover aprire la strada oggi, ha segnato il primo WP con 31 secondi da perdere sul duo Mason Klein/Toby Price KTM. Finora hanno iniziato solo 13 motociclisti.

Klein può significare “piccolo” in tedesco, ma questo non ha impedito a Mason Klein di giocare nella grande lega. Dopo aver dominato il Rallye du Maroc nella categoria Rally2 alla tenera età di 20 anni, l’americano è ancora in corsa alla sua prima Dakar. Guida la classe dei motociclisti meno esperti con quasi mezz’ora in mano sul francese Camille Chapelière e su un altro rookie, Bradley Cox, figlio di un certo Alfie Cox, che si è fatto conoscere alla Dakar. Sapendo di essere arrivato secondo dietro a Klein nella gara del Rally2 in Marocco, la lotta per il titolo di debuttante tra i due piloti della BAS Dakar KTM promette di essere entusiasmante.

07:20 Moto: Gelažninkas ancora in controllo
Arūnas Gelažninkas ha vinto ogni tappa della categoria ‘Original by Motul’ tranne la fase 1A, andata a Benjamin Melot. Il detentore del titolo nella classe delle corse senza supporto ha ora più di 10 minuti in mano su Milan Engel e 43 sul rookie sudafricano Charan Moore. Melot ha più di un’ora di vantaggio sul rivale lituano.

07:13 Moto: Rodrigues fa girare la palla
Joaquim Rodrigues, che martedì ha ottenuto la sua prima vittoria di tappa, ha appena dato il via alla quarta speciale e oggi sarà incaricato di aprire la strada. Il motociclista portoghese sarà seguito da Toby Price, dal debuttante Mason Klein, Skyler Howes e Daniel Sanders, che ha tenuto il comando per gran parte della tappa precedente prima di essere eliminato sul palo. L’australiano si è fermato a mangiare un boccone con la fine in vista… Strategia, strategia.

07:00 Moto: Al-Attiyah da solo davanti?
Potrebbe benissimo aver terminato ottavo ieri, ma Nasser Al-Attiyah ha il controllo. Il pilota della Toyota ha approfittato dei problemi meccanici di Sébastien Loeb (che gli hanno fatto perdere più di mezz’ora al Qatar al termine della tappa 3) per aprire un gap in vetta alla classifica generale. Il francese occupa ancora il secondo posto, così come i suoi connazionali Adrien Van Beveren nella categoria moto o Alexandre Giroud nel quad, ma ha il problema di un distacco di 37′ da Al-Attiyah. Come è noto alla Dakar, se è difficile guadagnare tempo, è molto più facile perderlo…

1. 13:16 Second stage win for Barreda as Petrucci lands podium finish

   Joan Barreda romped to the end of the timed sector with the fastest time to claim his second stage win of the year. The Spaniard has never failed to win two or more Dakar stages since 2020. Pablo Quintanilla came in second, while Danilo Petrucci earned his first Dakar podium finish. Way to go, ‘Petrux’!

2. 13:13 Shercos fly under the radar

   The Sherco TVS bikers, Rui Gonçalves and Lorenzo Santolino, posted an outstanding tag-team performance to finish third and fourth in the stage, 8 and 9 minutes behind the leader, respectively. It was a rock-solid outing by the French outfit, which puts them in a privileged position for tomorrow’s starting order. ‘Santo’, sixth in the 2021 Dakar on the French machine, started the day in the same place in the general classification.

3. 12:25 Barreda in control at km 358 as the Shercos inch closer to the podium

   Going into the trickiest part of the special, Joan Barreda remains in the lead with a margin of almost 5 minutes over teammate Pablo Quintanilla. Danilo Petrucci is nursing a deficit of more than 5 minutes in third place. Meanwhile, Sherco’s Lorenzo Santolino and Rui Gonçalves have moved to within just over 2 minutes of the special podium.

   Andrew Short is flying the flag for Yamaha at km 313, albeit almost 13 minutes behind Joan Barreda. Riding in fifteenth place, behind teammate Ross Branch, Adrien Van Beveren, who started the day in second place overall behind Daniel Sanders, is losing 14 minutes.
    

5. 10:29 Barreda opens up a small gap

   A few kilometres shy of the 200 km mark (not even halfway through the special!), Joan Barreda holds the reins with 44″ in hand over Danilo Petrucci, who is holding on tight. Pablo Quintanilla rounds out the top 3 at 1′48″. Rui Gonçalves has overtaken Sam Sunderland and is now right behind his Sherco factory teammate, Lorenzo Santolino.

   Joan Barreda has finally overtaken Danilo Petrucci at km 158. The Spaniard now leads the Italian by a puny seven seconds. Pablo Quintanilla remains third at 1′44″, while Lorenzo Santolino flies the flag for Sherco in fourth, ahead of Sam Sunderland and his own teammate Rui Gonçalves.

2. 09:11 Moto: Petrucci still looking good at km 120

   Danilo Petrucci still holds the reins in the final approach to the neutralisation, but Joan Barreda has come in within striking distance. The Spaniard is now just 16 seconds behind the former MotoGP racer. Meanwhile, Pablo Quintanilla has faded a bit behind Barreda.

3. 09:01 Moto: Quintanilla clinging on to Barreda

   Pablo Quintanilla, who jumped ship from Husqvarna to Honda, won the Rallye du Maroc and is racing in the Dakar with his sights set on the top prize. The Chilean posted the third fastest time at the second time check, 1′28″ behind Danilo Petrucci and just under a minute down on his teammate Barreda.

4. 08:44 Moto: Petrucci twists the knife

   First at WP1, Danilo Petrucci is still on a roll at km 80, where he posted the fastest time by 30 seconds over Joan Barreda. Sherco’s Lorenzo Santolino and Rui Gonçalves were third and fourth, respectively, 2′03″ behind ‘Petrux’. 

5. 08:39 Moto: Michek in fifth

   Martin Michek, the third best rookie of 2020, went through the first time check in fifth place, 1′12″ down on Danilo Petrucci. The Czech was over the moon about finishing 13th on Tuesday (despite having to don two jackets due to the cold), when he was just over 5 minutes slower than the winner.

6. 08:30 Quad: Copetti gets going

   Yesterday’s winner, Pablo Copetti, was the first rider out of the starting blocks today. The Argentinian-American, runner-up and winner of two stages in the previous edition, has built up a lead of more than 15 minutes over Alexandre Giroud in the general standings. Title holder Manuel Andújar, third on Tuesday, is also a man to watch.

7. 08:27 Moto: Petrucci steals the show

   ‘Petrux’ played his joker card to stay in the race yesterday and is now proving that he deserved to continue the Dakar. The Italian posted the fastest time at the first intermediate time check, 20 seconds ahead of Joan Barreda, the big loser of stage 3, in which he conceded a bit over 10 minutes. Pablo Quintanilla is third at 52 seconds and Sam Sunderland fourth at 1 minute.

8. 08:08 Moto: Price shipping almost five minutes!

   Toby Price is 4′37″ down on Daniel Sanders’s provisional fastest time at the second time check. Yesterday’s winner, Joaquim Rodrigues, is even further back at almost eight minutes down. 

9. 07:58 Moto: Less than one minute separates the top 5

   Ricky Brabec is leading the special at the first time check. The American has a wafer-thin margin of 15″ over Daniel Sanders (GasGas) and 28″ over defending champion Kevin Benavides (KTM), who yesterday said that he was ‘still in the game’. Adrien Van Beveren, second in the general standings, and Mason Klein are not far behind.

10. 07:47 Moto: Sanders reaches the first time check

    Daniel Sanders, who lost time on purpose yesterday to avoid having to open the way today, has laid down a marker by blasting through the first WP with 31 to spare over the Mason Klein/Toby Price KTM duo. Only 13 bikers have started so far.

11. 07:29 Moto: Klein and Cox: the rookies step to the fore

    Klein may mean ‘small’ in German, but that has not stopped Mason Klein from playing in the big league. After dominating the Rallye du Maroc in the Rally2 category at the tender age of 20, the American is still on a roll in his very first Dakar. He leads the class for the least experienced bikers with almost half an hour in hand over Frenchman Camille Chapelière and another rookie, Bradley Cox, son of a certain Alfie Cox, which made his name in the Dakar. Knowing that he was runner-up to Klein in the Rally2 race in Morocco, the fight for top rookie honours between the two BAS Dakar KTM riders promises to be a thrilling one.

    Arūnas Gelažninkas has won every stage in the ‘Original by Motul’ category bar stage 1A, which went to Benjamin Melot. The title holder in the class for motorbikes racing without support now has more than 10 minutes in hand over Milan Engel and 43 over the South African rookie Charan Moore. Melot is over one hour down on his Lithuanian rival.
     

13. 07:13 Moto: Rodrigues gets the ball rolling

    Joaquim Rodrigues, who nabbed his first stage win on Tuesday, has just kicked off the fourth special and will be in charge of opening the way today. The Portuguese biker will be followed by Toby Price, rookie Mason Klein, Skyler Howes and Daniel Sanders, who held the lead for much of the previous stage before being pipped at the post. The Australian stopped to grab a bite with the end in sight… Strategy, strategy.

14. 07:00 Moto: Al-Attiyah alone out in front?

    He may well have finished eighth yesterday, but Nasser Al-Attiyah is in control. The Toyota driver took advantage of Sébastien Loeb’s mechanical problems (which caused him to lose more than half an hour to the Qatari at the end of stage 3) to open up a gap at the top of the overall classification. The Frenchman still occupies second place, just like his countrymen Adrien Van Beveren in the bike category or Alexandre Giroud in the quad race, but he has the problem of a deficit of 37’ to Al-Attiyah. As it is commonly known on the Dakar, while it is difficult to gain time, it is much easier to lose it…

    Today’s special, the longest of the 44th Dakar, features a very fast section about 200 km long, followed by dunes, rocky sectors… The drivers and codrivers’ mental fortitude will be put to the test. Who will come out on top?

Sam Sunderland and Daniel Sanders also admitted that they had been riding within themselves to avoid having to play the role of scout today. In the overall classification, Sunderland leads the dance by just four seconds, but Adrien Van Beveren, who has just celebrated his 31st birthday, could offer himself a belated present by climbing to the top of the race hierarchy.
